1. Background:
Derajo (development for education rehabilitation of social infrastructures and
environmental joints organization) is nongovernmental, non-political, nonprofit making
organization. The organization was masterminded and later established by group of
academic and intellectual youth of Somaliland in 2011 to deal with formidable task of
social livelihood enhancement and developments for its community.
The organization’s main office is in Burao (Somaliland second largest city) and has other
representatives in the main Somaliland regions. The organization implemented quite
several projects; among them WASH and Women rights for Water related projects funded
by several funders such as Somaliland Diaspora, WFP and other partners, the main areas
in which the organization priorities are Human Rights, Water, education, environment,
livelihood and community health care.
However the Derejo organization is determine to take cycle treads to strengthen the
livelihood of the destitute families in both rural and urban areas, to organize substantial
workshops of community mobilization and orientation for Women and youth who are at
risk for associating with criminal and violent lifestyle by delivering an alternatives, and
ushering to the vocational schools and Civic education where the desperate youth (both
girls and boys) could have revive their moral and restore their ethics. Derejo has high
hopes to play active role for the development of this part of the world. And stretch its wings
to the entire sub-Saharan states of Africa in the future.
1.1. Vision: Our endeavors is to foster a community that share a common objective and ideology to
achieve their well- being and lead themselves towards the holistic approach of promotion.
1.2. Mission: Derejo mission is to facilitate the process of community development through sensible
mechanism and eradicate the poverty by social mobilization, rehabilitation of
infrastructures, education accessibility, and environmental protection and to light the
candle to show the way of improvement.
1.3. Objectives:
• To promote community water supply through conservation and preservation of
water resources in both rain water and ground water to provide consultancy
services for planning and designing community water supply, waste water disposal
and solid water management schemes. To carry out researches and development
studies on different aspect of environmental protection and water supply,
workshop, campaign, seminars, training programs etc.
• To promote and make available method of improvement and supervisory skills to
perk up Somaliland community and the management at the grass root level Poverty
eradication and elevation of social morality, lead to work to defusing domestic

problems that might resulted by low point of social livelihood for providing
essential and visible as well as viable guide line and show reachable approach of
developing.
• Empowering women through skill enlargement, protecting children from abuse
and exploiting through education and granting fundamental right
• Ecological preservation, fortification and conservation, sensible utilization of
natural resources to achieve a sustainable and unwavering development with
active community participation, because we believe that only collective ideas and
integrated human power can build a prosperous jubilant nation, ensure that grass
root effort can change the destiny.
• Stimulate a sustainable development methods and show practical way of assisting
those who are trying to promote their income generating activities, to encourage
the youth to be a master of themselves and find a chances to lead themselves
towards decent standard of live, to develop strong partnership with the private
sectors and the civil society organizations in pursuit of development and ushering
a systematic way outs
• To draw up plans and their implementation for all around social development
including people in tribal areas, downtrodden minority etc.
• To undertake nationwide human resources development programs including mass
awareness campaign and orientation
• To combat against any form of oppression subjugation or any evil act of social
harassment and urges the techniques to eliminate of all forms of discriminations
against part of the society. to eliminate any act of racism and xenophobia that
might exist in the society and promote harmonious kind of life
• To relief internal displaced persons and other uprooted community who are facing
economic hardship, drought affected, victims of war etc. to provide a special
assistance and measures to address the challenges and methods to eradicate the
poverty, eliminate the illiteracy and enhance the standard of education as well as
to ensure children to have access of faire education regardless of region, gender,
ethnic, will have completed a full course of basic education and both genders share
the opportunity.

3.1. Capacity Building- (Awareness andTrainings):
Derejo organization provides a considerable training of capacity building to the local staff
of Somaliland water agencies particularly Buroa and Erigavo.
the organizations WASH Officer Mr. Muse Abdi Ismail and prominent water Engineer
have played key roles for the WASH sector within the organization, Mr. Mohamoud
Yasin who have immeasurable credit to the Somaliland MWM, these praiseworthy

member help the organization to go through advanced tasks and provide valuable trainings
and workshop to reshape and give advantageous capacity building to the local staff of
BWA.
Derejo organization has been involving a major landmark of social mobilization; we
have been orientating the community in achieving the millennium development goals
and make villagers in Qoryaale, Beer, Yiroowe, Magaalo-yar and other eastward
Togdheer inhabitants understand the issues pursue community development in
collective hearts and mind.
3.2. Environment: A team of environmental expert has been doing an ecological assessment through
Somaliland regions to ensure the causes of soil erosion, gully erosion, the hazards of
deforestation; the panel has been traveling a thousand of males in Hawd grazing land,
Saraar plateau and Guban as well as Sool valley
By January and February 2011 derejo environmental team led by Saleeban Ali
(derejo environmental specialist) had traveled a thousand kilometers through
Togdheer, Sool, Saraar, and Sanaag regions to assess the consequence of soil and
gully erosion in the grazing land, the team has appealed for this damaged areas to the
local and international organizations who are dealing with environmental concerns to
take their measures to those defenseless areas , the study revealed that this grazing
land would not maintain its customary if action to safeguard cannot be taken
immediately.
With organization member’s modest contribution and some donation from
Somaliland Diaspora and a private institutions Derejo has been giving some sort of
short term training programs relating to instruction of
• environmental protections techniques
• Avoiding soil erosion
• Solid waste management
• Organizing Self-help groups for sustaining their livelihood

3.3. Education: Derejo believes that education is the key for every major changes of development and is
essential to any social /human improvement, so in order to make this view possible, Derejo
encourages any activities to promote social integration among student of all levels. To
avoid perpetuation of social segregation, Derejo deeply concern such evil act and say
“NO” with aloud voice to any system based on differences in family origins , rank, tribes,
ethnic, classes, wealthy etc, but ensures that the schools are open for the children of all ,
both gender , men and women from all parts of the community.
Organizing student competition: so as to encourage the students and give chances to
acqu3.3.aintance for each other Derejo organized a contests between Togdheer
intermediate schools, to that extend we as an organization believe to play good role of
social crossroads and creating close relationship between school teachers and the students
as well.
Education appraisal: Education officer Mr. Sayid M.Ali and his team did assessment
in May and June of 2012, to illustrate the vulnerability and the weakness of Somaliland
girl’s education, the team had also narrated new techniques and gave an advocacy about
how to tackle this issue. The organization is recently doing its best to find ways and
means to mitigate the problem.

3.5. Human Rights and Democracy (Promoting democratic election and Women Participation):
So as to play good role for maintaining Somaliland democratic election, Derejo had taken
a tangible position for the proceeding national democratic election as per community
mobilization and observing the systematic and fairness of the national democratic election,
the organization organized a team of prominent teachers had to convince the community
to cast their vote and make the election as medium of transferring power. These teams
traveled to the remote village to ensure the community to understand the real meaning of
adopting democratic government

3.6. Water supply, Hygiene and sanitation (WASH): Derejo has future plans to do its best to restore dented water system of somaliland main
cities, rain water harvesting, like catching rain drops from roof of buildings this efforts
include repairing old tanks and building a new system of water storages so that the
community would enjoy for having adequate water supply. In addition to that Derejo is
also aiming to institute managing streams of Togdheer seasonal river Delta and implement
a projects in Beer village, to which we are very much optimistic to have more beneficial
for both farmers and pastoralists communities of Beer and surroundings. Thought this
move needs to have a quite mega project to initiate customize Togdheer river delta
Water Consultants Group: the organization has a group of water and environmental
specialists, engineers and construction professionals who could provide professional
advices and manage for any water and environmental related projects , this group is
determine to help the community reach their project goals.
Derejo consultant can offer a specific expertise ground and rain fall water as well as
environmental revise. In recent times derejo team of consultant had been expended to other
areas of development including architecture, surveying, construction this team are highly
tested and grantee to carry out a professional job and put every systematic methods to a
proficient manner.
The organization is also to play a visible role for the managing of sustainability and
supplying adequate clean water for its community this responsibility and project areas
include:

• Socio-economic baseline studies
• Borehole rehabilitation
• Low cost sanitation system
• Drainage and sewerage system
• Water supply evaluation
• Environmental sanitation and hygienic
• Hand drilled well
• Shallow well constructions; and
• Mini-water system

3.7. Emergency Relief: During the first quarter of the year 2011 a severe drought occurred in Somalia and
Somaliland, Derejo have had a material role to minimize the human sufferings of Togdheer
, Sool ,Saraar and Saraar regions. The organization had supplied a million gallons of water
to the villagers and the pastoralist community. In addition to that derejo also distributed
food and nourishment to some most needy families.
3.8. Soil conservation :

Derejo organization had implemented Soil conservation project in Kalbare village, the
project was 119,267 Mt Food For Asset ( FFA) funded by the World Food Program’s
office in Hargaisa, enclosed 389 of direct beneficiaries and 4890 of indirect house
hold beneficiaries.
3.9. Internally Displaced People (Burao IDPs) and Derejo responses:
As per fund received from British Somali Community Derejo had delivered used cloths
and household items to the IDPs , this effort was well appreciated both by Somaliland
authority in national, regional level and also opened a new window of opportunity for the
organization where the Derejo had widened its wing to the new horizon of partnership,
British Somali Community remains one of the vast partner with Derejo organization , some
of organization’s high-flying volunteers received gratitude letter from British Somali
Community in commemoration their masses of endeavor they devoted so as to make that
project of delivering items very visible and more viable.
The organization is now very much companion, exchange their experiences and share their
concerns and mutual and twin organizations, Derejo management has high hopes that this
relationship will ever maintain and bear a fruit.

3.10. Awareness:
Derejo organization is committed to help the community to take any measure to ensure
the safety and strengthen their capacity of social enhancement and environmental
protection as well as practicing true principles of their right. Derejo organization will help
the community to foster their wellbeing and maintain habitats to ensure the survival of
their forests is obligatory for every individual, in this concern we urges everyone must be
vigilant and guard against any act that might result an environmental hazards.
4. Future prospective
In the coming future this community organization of Derejo has high hopes to achieve their
formidable task in good time of peace and prosperous.
The organization is determine to build a charming and dedicative community who is ready
to take their poor destiny into their own hands , a community that shares common view to
overcome their inconvenience , an integrated kind of community who spares no effort to
eradicate a poverty, illiteracy, have enough clean water and green and fertile environment
It is not long future that this organization wants to extend it activity throughout the east
African regions or likely the entire continent.
