Primary solar water circuit connections
Important
When switched off, the temperature in the sensors canexceed 150 °C.
To protect against frost a water-propylene glycol mixture isused as heat transfer fluid.
The pressure in the solar circuit can rise to 4 bar maximum.
Due to the high temperatures, the use of propylene glycoland the pressure in the primary solar circuit, the primarysolar water connections must be made with the utmostcare, in particular with regard to insulation andwatertightness. The technical recommendations in theseinstructions MUST be observed.

1 Outlet and return pipes
Dimensions
To be able to have pipework without degassers or bleed valves athigh points, the solar fluid flow rate must not fall below 0.4 m/s duringthe degassing procedure. Observe the following parameters for thisto be possible:
The pipes must be as short as possible and always slopingdownwards between the collectors and the connection to the solartank. If the installation criteria for good degassing cannot be met, a manualbleed degasser must always be installed at the high point(s) ofthe solar equipment.
IdealIncorrect (high point with no air vent)Correct (high point with air vent)Location of manual bleed valve degasser
Connecting
Use of a hacksaw is prohibited.
Pipe connections by compression unions
Hard soldering: Hard soldering: hard soldering filler metal withoutflux in accordance with DIN EN 1044, e.g. L-Ag2P or L-CuP6.
Soft brazing is authorised only up to the permanenttemperature of 110 °C.
The use of flux promotes corrosion conditions in systemsoperating with propylene glycol as heat transfer fluid. In allcases the inside of the pipes must be flushed.
Pipe unions: can only be used if they are resistant to glycol, pressure (4 bar) depending on version) and temperature (180 °C,-30 °C) (manufacturer's data).

2 Solar Panel Connection
Dietrisol PRO flat collectors:
The outlet and the return can be connected directly to therisers by using the connection kit. The outlet and return connectionsare on the same side of the solar collector. Be careful not to reversethe outlet and the return.
If the outlet and the return are reversed, the system cannotoperate correctly.
The sensor must always be installed on the outlet end.For the installation and water connections to the sensors, referto the instructions supplied with them.
Dietrisol POWER tubular solar panels
Fit the outlet connection (with immersed sensor socket andmanual air vent) to the top right-hand end of the series of collectors.Fit the return connection to the other end.If possible, position the most direct ascending pipe on the outlet side.Bring the return pipe towards the outlet from below the collector. The Dietrisol POWER collector does not have a built-in return pipeunlike the Dietriso PRO flat collector.
For the installation and water connections to the sensors, referto the instructions supplied with them.
Special case
If for reasons connected with the design of the building theconnecting pipes must rise from their mounting point on the solarcollector to the point where they pass under the tiles, then it isnecessary to insert a degassing pot with a manual bleed valveunder the roof at the highest point on the water circuit.
Pipe insulation
Prefabricated for "Duo-Tube" (Option).
If different copper pipes are used, theinsulation must be:
- Resistant to constant temperatures up to150 °C in the collector zone and the hotoutlet and also down to -30 °C
- Resistant to UV light and weather in the roofarea.
- Insulation preferably waterproof andcontinuous
- with a thickness equal to the tube diameterand with a K coefficient of 0.04 W/mK.
50 % reduction of the insulation ispermitted when passing through the roofand walls.
Recommended materials for temperatures up to 150 °C
- Duo-Tube De Dietrich- Armaflex HT- mineral wool- glass fibre
To protect the insulation against mechanical damage, birdpecking and UV light, add extra protection for the heatinsulation sleeves in the roof area by using an aluminiumsheet sleeve or aluminium adhesive tape. This additionalprotection must be sealed with silicone.

Hydraulic connection of the water circuit for domestic use
These domestic hot water tanks can operate at a maximum operatingpressure of 10 bars. As a general rule, the tanks operate at 7 bars.
Specific precautions
Flushing the system Before making the connection, rinse the domestic water inletpipes to prevent the introduction of metal or other particles into theDHW tank. The foreign matter would also risk damaging certaincomponents such as the safety unit, valves, tap fittings, etc
Provision for Switzerland
Connections must be made in accordance with the instructionsof the Société Suisse de l'Industrie du Gaz et des Eaux. Anylocal instructions from water distribution plants must also berespected.
Domestic hot water connection
Domestic water mixertapAll Dietrisol TRIO hotwater tanks are fittedwith a domestic watermixer tap on thehot water outlet pipe ,with a setting range of35-60 °C.
The thermostatic mixer tap does not require any particularmaintenance.
Protection against corrosion on the domestic hot water outlet
You are strongly advised to install a dielectric insulationconnection between the thermostatic mixer tap (mixed water outlet) and the connection pipe to preventproblems of corrosion. The same applies to the brass T-piece at the cold water inlet.

Connecting the domestic cold water
The components used for the connection to the cold water supplymust comply with the prevailing standards and regulations in thecountry concerned. Fit a non-return valve to the domestic cold watercircuit.
Safety valve
In compliance with the safety rules, fit a sealed safety valveto the tank's domestic cold water inlet.
Calibration of the safety valve : 10 bar.For France, we recommend hydraulic safety units fitted with amembrane with the NF marking.- Integrate the safety valve in the cold water circuit.- Install the safety valve close to the calorifier in a place which is
easy to access.Dimensions
The safety unit and its connection to the DHW tank must be of at leastthe same diameter as the cold water supply pipe in the tank'sdomestic circuit. No isolating devices should be located between the safety valve orunit and the tank. The safety unit outlet pipe must have a uniform and sufficient gradientand its diameter must be at least equal to that of the outlet openingin the safety unit (to prevent the flow of water being hindered if thepressure is too high). The outlet pipe in the valve or safety unit must not be blocked.
France
The level of the safety unit must be lower than that of the cold waterinlet to enable draining. Otherwise, fit a drainage pipe to the lowestpoint of the tank.
Germany
Define the dimensions of the safety valve in accordance with the DIN1988 standard :
Fit the safety valve above the calorifier to obviate having to drain thetank during servicing.Install the drainage valve at the lowest point on the calorifier.
Pressure reducer
If the supply pressure exceeds 80% of the valve or safety unit setting(e.g. 5.5 bars for a safety unit set at 7 bars), a pressure reducer mustbe installed upstream of the DHW tank. Install the pressure reducerdownstream of the water meter in such a way as to ensure the samepressure in all of the pipes in the installation.
Bleed circuit
During the heating process, water can flow through the bleed circuitto guarantee the safety of the installation. Do not block!
Domestic hot water circulation loop
To guarantee the availability of hot water as soon as the taps areturned on, a circulation loop between the draw-off points and therecirculation pipes in the DHW tank can be installed. See diagram .
Measures to take to prevent hot water blow back
Fit a non-return valve to the domestic cold water circuit. If using aclosed calorifier, the non-return valve must be easily accessible

1.1 Filling with water
Carefully degas the DHW tank and the distribution network in orderto eliminate noises and hammering caused by trapped air moving inthe pipes during draw-off. To do so:
Completely fill the DHW tank via the cold water inlet pipe, leaving the hot water valve open. Only reclose this valve whenthe flow is regular and there are no noises or hammering in thepipes.
Then successively degas all the hot water pipes by opening thecorresponding valves.
These operations also make it possible to rinse and clean thehot water pipes located at the DHW tank outlet.
1.2 Adjustment
Set the domestic hot water thermostatic mixing valve to the requiredtemperature to avoid scalding when running domestic hot water.
During the heating process, a certain amount of water mayflow through the valve or safety unit; this is caused bywater expansion. This phenomenon is completely normaland must in no event be hindered.
2 Primary boiler circuit
Refer to the technical and assembly instructions delivered withthe boiler.
If the boiler's domestic hot water circuit is set higher than 50 °C, theSZ parameter (zone reversal temperature) of the Diemasol Bregulator must be changed to 5 K above this domestic hot watercircuit temperature setting.
See the instructions supplied with the control unit and anyremote control unit used.
When the boiler and the heating system have been filled, check thatthe domestic hot water tank boiler heat exchanger is properly bled.

3 Primary solar circuit
Recommendation: With small systems, use DE DIETRICHpropylene glycol containers to recover fluid under the safety valvedischarge pipe.
3.1 Flushing the primary solar circuit
check the connection to the series of collectors and thecollector sensor connection.

Flushing
When commissioning, the solar installation must be flushedmeticulously to remove grit, deposits and any flux residue. Flushing time: Minimum 10 minutesFlushing fluid: Heat Transporting Fluid1. Open the spherical liner valves.
2. Set the 3-way valve to manual mode MM2.
(refer to the Diemasol B regulator instructions) so that theupper heat exchanger is also flushed and filled.
if the tank is not yet switched on, change the position of thevalve manually.
3. Close the drain taps when the system is full.
4. At the end of the operation, do not forget to change back toautomatic mode MM4.
5. Close the spherical liner valves again.
The tank is fitted with a filling and draining device (No. 114)which can be used to flush the system.
Important note about flushing and filling the system
The solar installation has been designed in such as waythat total draining of the collectors is impossible.Antifreeze is included in the mixture. Therefore it isimperative to flush and fill the solar installation with heattransfer fluid.
Dietrisol POWER tubular solar panels:For the rinsing, to short-circuit the end of the rising main(upstream of the solar collector). To refer to the note of thesolar collector.
Not to carry out rinsing in the event of direct solar radiation(vapor formation) or if there is risk of freezing (risk ofdeteriorations).
16 DIETRISOL TRIO DT 250/3 07/11/06 - 300004371-001-E
3.2 Leak test
The system must be tested for leaks with the heat transfer fluid whenflushing is finished.- Testing pressure: 2.5 bar- Test time: minimum 1 hour
In the absence of air in the solar circuit, the test pressure must notdecrease. When the test time has elapsed, allow the pressure in the system torise until it triggers the safety valve (operating check).
Propylene glycol leaks very easily. The pressure tests do notguarantee that there will be no leaks when the system is filledwith propylene glycol under pressure. For this reason, werecommend an additional leak test when the system is filledand working.
Do not carry out a leak test when the installation is exposed todirect solar radiation (risk of vaporisation) or when it isfreezing (risk of damage).
After the leak test, adjust the solar circuit pressure to 2 bar bar.
4 Filling the solar circuit with heat transfer fluid
Before the filling of the installation, to check the preload ofthe expansion vessel according to the static height(Preload = static Height/10 + 0.3 bar).
check the connection to the series of collectors and thecollector sensor connection.
Heat Transporting Fluid
Dietrisol PRO flat collectors::Water/propylene glycol mixture or ready-to-use LS mixtureMixture ratio: 57/43
- 57 parts water- 43 parts propylene glycol
The freezing point of this mixture is -28 °C. Down to -33 °C, it formsslush that will not burst the pipes.Dietrisol POWER tubular solar panels:Tyfocor HTL ready-to-use mixture (only).
Filling pressure
1.5 max. 2 bar (or0.5 bar above the static height). The filling pressure must be more than 0.5 bar above the expansionchamber pre-load pressure. The ready-to-use mixture must bepumped directly from the container.
Do not use a manual filling pump.
Prolonged operation of the pump (85) will have caused preliminarydegassing of the solar circuit.
Filling
Follow the same procedure as for rinsing. To put the installation under pressure, to close the blowoff valve onthe return.
Not to forget to open the valve B at the end of the filling
Since propylene glycol leaks much more easily than water, check all connections and gaskets for leaks after a fewhours of operation at working pressure.

5 Bleed
- Switch on the circulating pump: air bubbles move towards thebleed points (Airstop system and manual air vent).
- Stop the circulating pump.- Open all the bleed valves to expel the air then close them again.
Depending on the fluid temperature and system pressure, when the degassing screw is opened, the fluid may spurtout with some force. If the water temperature is high, becareful: RISK OF SCALDING.
Repeat the operation several times; alternate operation of the pumpassists degassing.
Bleeding must be continued until pressure variations canno longer be detected at the pressure gauge, or whenstarting or stopping the pump. If loss of pressurecontinues, add heat transfer fluid in accordance with thefilling instructions.
After a few days of operation at high working temperature, bleeding should be repeated. This bleeding is necessarybecause small air bubbles form in the propylene glycol athigh working temperatures.
For systems installed in the winter, it is advisable to bleedthem again in the summer.
6 Antithermosiphon valve
The antithermosiphon valve is included in the spherical liner valve onthe red thermometer and it is characterized by an opening pressureof 200 mm water column.1. For filling, degassing and rinsing the installation, the two
spherical liner valves must be positioned at 45 ° (see illustration). The spherical liner in the valve lifts the antithermosiphon valve.
2. When the installation is in use, the spherical liner valves must be'returned to the vertical position.
The antithermosiphon valve operates when the stop cock is in theopen position.

7 Final checks before commissioning
1. The system is filled with De Dietrich heat transfer fluid without anyair bubbles. Inspect all the connections in the system forleaks..
2. Leave the fluid circulating round the system for some time andcheck again for leaks. (regulator in manual mode).
3. Open the bleed valve of the manual bleed degasser (bleedagain).
4. Bring the pressure in the system up to the 2 bar working pressureby topping up if necessary with heat transfer fluid.
5. After several hours of operation, the system should be bled again(via the manual bleed degasser). After bleeding, check thesystem pressure and add more fluid if necessary.
6. Set the regulator to automatic mode.
7. Check the anti-thermosiphon valves on the outlet andthe return.Close them if necessary.
8 Summer shutdown
The system is designed in such a way that no special precautions arenecessary during long periods of absence in summer.
Do not switch off the regulator, or drain off the heattransfer fluid.
9 Regulate technical to respect
Installation must be carried out in accordance with the prevailingregulations, the codes of practice and the recommendations in theseinstructions.

10 Maintenance
It is imperative to drain the solar circuit before any work iscarried out.
We recommend that you take out a preventive maintenance contractto check the fluid level, antifreeze protection, pressure in the system, leak test and general operation every year or every two years.
10.1 Tank
Magnesium anodes
The magnesium anodes must be checked at least every 2, years. After the first check, determine the frequency of future checks on thebasis of anode wear. The anodes can be checked by two methods:
Inspection: the anode must be replaced if its diameter is lessthan 15 mm (original diameter = 33 mm).
Function test:
- disconnect the earth wire from the anode.- measure the strength of the current between the tank and the
anode. if the current is less than 0.1 mA, the anode must bereplaced.
If the anodes must be replaced, proceed as described below.Valve or safety unit
The valve or safety unit must be operated at least once a month inorder to ensure that it is operating correctly and to be forewarned ofany overpressure which would damage the DHW tank.
Descaling
In hard water regions, it is advisable to ask the fitter to descale theDHW tank exchanger once a year in order to maintain its level ofperformance.
Casing
The casing of the DHW tank can be cleaned with soapy water.
Procedures to follow for descaling, or checking or replacing the magnesium anodes
Prepare a new sealing gasket
1. Cut off the cold water supply and drain the DHW tank. To drainthe safety unit, set the unit to "Drain" and open a hot water tap (ora drain valve) to let air enter.
2. Disconnect the expansion vessel from the rest of the circuit byunscrewing the automatic connection nut (non-return valve onboth sides of the connection).
Nut to be unscrewed
3. Remove the expansion vessel
4. Take out the polystyrene stopper.
5. Remove the inspection hatch (13 spanner).
6. Check the anodes and replace them if necessary.
7. Check the state of scaling on the thermal exchangers anddescale if necessary.
8. Re-assemble the parts and replace the leak tight seal on theflange.
9. After assembly and filling, check the tightness of the seal on thetank.
10. Switch on.
The flange mounting bolts must not be excessively tight: 6Nm +1/-0. Use a dynamometric spanner. Comments: Approximately 6 Nm is obtained by holding thebox spanner by the small lever.
