DIGITIZATION INITIATIVES AT NUK
• digitization of Slavic manuscripts from the collection of Jernej Kopitar (1780-1844);
• digitization of selected materials from the Map and Pictorial Collection of NUK:– digitization of portrait photographs of

1. value and importance of the materials for national heritage;
2. frequency of use;3. type of the carrier and its
resistance to time;
4. format of the materials.

Collections selected for digitization:• portraits-photographs of famous
Slovenians (11.000 photographs);• old maps of Slovenian territory
from 1548 to 1871 (cca. 100 maps);• landscape post cards on Slovenian
places printed before 1940 (cca. 13.000 post cards);
• placards printed before 1950 (570 placards);
• the photographic collection of Fran Vesel (250 photographs);

• 11.000 portraits photographs from 1850-2000 scanned from 1999-2000;
• flat bed scanner HP4c;• formats used:
– TIFF (300 dpi/A4) – archive,– JPG (120/200 dpi, thumbnails and
print 72 dpi);• copyright agreements; • selection to be accessed via internet.

DIGITIZATION OF THE COLLECTION OF OLD MAPS OF SLOVENIAN TERRITORY FROM 1548 TO 1871
• joint project with the Slovenian Landsurveying Institute during 2002;
• 30 maps most vulnerable to damage selected;
• 3 different methods of digital reproduction: – digital photographs – classic photographs– digital scans
• formats: TIFF-8 (archive), JPG (200 dpi, thumbnails 72 dpi);
• bibliographic database (Unimarc/Dublin Core).

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
• implementation of press clipping system to the processing of journal articles;
• regional / cultural cooperation;• digitization of most required
materials in the library.
