gadgetsgizmos
IT’S GOT
AND
WHAT GADGETS. What gizmos. Oh, andwhat a drive...
You can have so much fun playing withthe new Honda Civic that you can forgetit's actually a very nice car to drive.
But we'll get to that later. First... thosegadgets.
First of all, the dashboard. Drive like amadman with a leaden right foot, and thedash turns blue. Ease off a bit, and be alittle more sensible, and it's a bluey-greencolour. Drive like an eco-god, and, yes, itgoes green.
You can have such fun trying to keep thedash green. I always thought the lowestgear possible is always the most fuelefficient. No, it's not. But try it for yourself.
There's also the little arrow beneath thespeedo that says when you should changegear to keep the green colour glowing.
But that's not all.
I picked up the Civic ES 2.2 Diesel fromfrom Hendy Honda Southampton invvvvvWest Quay Road
(it's opposite Ikea, if you don't know it) and got caught in traffic. When the engine cut out at the first junction, I was ready to startcursing.
My teenage daughter laughed. She's learning to drive, and thebelief the old man had stalled a shiny new Civic was enough tohave her in fits.
I couldn't believe it. Surely I didn't stall the thing. Then the ecopenny dropped. It was the auto stop-start function kicking in.
Cruise to a stop anywhere, and the engine cuts out. When youput it in gear ready to pull away again, then the engineautomatically fires up.
Pride restored, I went on my merry way. Then I needed to reverse. On the dashboard, the radio details disappeared and in their placeup popped the screen for the camera hidden away in the numberplate on the back. reversing into a car parking spot has never beeneasier (even at Ikea - and you know what that is like...)
The gadgets didn't stop there. There's cruise control and a speedlimiter. There's the usual Bluetooth for the mobile phone. Thestereo's great.
So what about the drive? After you've finished playing with thegadgets and actually get to drive the thing, it's super. With thediesel you'll get around 65 miles to the gallon, as long as your dashstays green.
There's plenty of zoom when you pull away, and going throughthe gears (just ignore the blue dashboard...) there's plenty of zip.Cruising on the motorway is a delight.
Just one thing to beware. The Civic's like the Tardis. Smallish tolook at on the outside and so spacious on the inside. It's easy togo a little faster than you imagine as the ride is so smooth andquiet.
Any downsides? The split rear screen takes a little getting used to- but to be honest, when I first climbed into the car I thought I'dnever get used to it, and 20 minutes later I'd forgotten it was anissue.
I nearly bought a Civic a few years ago when we were looking fora family car. The wife persuaded me to go for
something else. She does sometimesmake good choices (well, she's
got me, for a start). Butboy was that car the
wrong choice...
