    About Jalor District

    Historically, Jalor is known as Granite City. Jalon is also called Jalor. It is a city inRajasthan state of Western India. In ancient times, Jalor was known as Jabalipura whichwas named after a saint. The town was also known as Suvarngiri or Songir, the GoldenMount, on which the fort stands. Jalor was ruled by the Paramaras in the 10 th century.Kirtipala, the youngest son of Alhana, ruler of Nadol, was the founder of the Jalor line ofChauhans. He captured it from the Parmars in 1181 and took the clan name Songara,after the place. Under Udayasimha, Jalor had a golden period. In 1228, Udayasimhaoffered stiff resistance to Iltutmish. During the reign of Kanhad Dev Songara, Jalor wasattacked and destroyed in 1311 by Alauddin Khilji.

    Geographically, it lies at 2534'N latitude, 7262'E longitude and 153 m altitude . Thedistrict covers a geographical area of 10,640 square kilometers and on basis of this sizeranks 11th in the State and 48 th in India. As per data recorded in the year 2015, theforest cover extends to 1.88% of the total geographical area of the district. It lies to South of Sukri River, a tributary of Luni River. The district is bounded on the North-Eastby Pali District, on the South-East by Sirohi District, and by Banaskantha Di strict ofGujarat state on the South-West. National Highway no 15 ( Bhatinda-Kandla) passesthrough the district. The district has extreme dry climate. The actual rainfall in thedistrict was 688.2 mm in the year of 2015-16.

    Administratively, the district is divided into 7 sub-districts namely Jalor, Ahore, Bhinmal,Raniwara, Sanchore, Sayala and Bagoda. Moreover, it has 4 towns and 801 villages. Hindiis the administrative language of the district. In the state of Rajasthan with an allotteddistrict code of 116 the district of Jalor came into existence. There are 1 parliamentaryand 5 assembly constituencies in the district.

    Demographically, The district has a population of 18,28,730 including 9,36,634 males and8,92,096 females . The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 26.21% out of with 26.94% males and 25.46 % females. The density of population of the district is 172 persons per sq km. The sex ratio is pegged at 952 females per 1000 maleswhile the child ratio stands at 895 females per 1000 males. The schedule castepopulation of the district is recorded as 3 ,57,196 persons including 1,85, 342 males and1,71,854 females. The percentage of Schedule Caste is 2.92%. The schedule tribepopulation is 1 ,78,719 persons with 93,290 males and 85,429 females. The percentageof Schedule Tribe is 1.93%. The major religion in the district is Hindu at 94.76% of thetotal population.

    Economically, the district is mainly based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Theoilseeds especially mustard oil seed is predominant crop. Other main crops are Wheat,bajra, kharif pulses, barley, jowar. Some mineral based industries are set up based onmineral available from local mines. Gypsum, limestone, bajari, murram, granite, andgraded fluorite are main mineral productions. Only small scale industries exist there. Themain small scale industries are granite slabs and tiles, marble cutting and polishing,mustard seed crushing, skimmed milk powder, butter and ghee, handloom cloth, leathershoes (mojari). There are four industrial areas in the district. It is one of the districtsreceiving Backward Region Grant Fund. In the year 2011-2012 the gross domesticproduct in the district was Rs 8 ,04,884 lakhs at current price.

    Educationally, the district has numerous institutes. The main colleges in the district areCollege Bhinmal, Government College, G. K. Gowani Government College and GlobalCollege etc . The district also has a good list of schools likewise Adarsh Vidhya MandirSec School, Bhinmal, Jalor, Alok Public Sec. School, Bhinmal, Jalor, Emmanul MissionSchool, Bhinmal Road , Jalor, Subodh Sr. Sec. School, Rampura Colony, Jalor, KaushalsVictoria School, Inside Suraj Pol, Jalor, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Jaswantpura, Jalor,Krishna Public Sec Sch, Sanchore, Jalor, Mahavir Bal Niketan , Sanchore, Jalor, SolarInternational School, RIICO, Link Road, Jalor etc. some important polytechnics are IndiraGandhi Industrial Training Centre and Industrial Training Institute. As per 2011 censusthe literacy rate in the district is 54.86% including 70.67% are males and 38.47% arefemales.

    The district has numerous historical and religious places which are main attractions fortourists from worldwide such as Topkhana, Jalor Fort, Sundha Mata Temple, NeelkanthMahadev, Jagnath Mahadev, Mosque of Malik Shah, Sire Mandir Temple of Jalor,Lohanagarh of Jaswantpura, Fort of Kot Kasta, Quila or Fort of Bhadrajun, Jahaz TempleMandwala, Jain Pilgrim Bhandavpur, Kirti Stambh and Nandishwar Deep Tirth Jalor. SireMandir is a temple situated in Jalor town , belongs to Saint Jalinder nath Maharaj. It issituated in the west of the Jalor fort . Many saints and followers of the Saint Jalindernath came & meditated here. Pandavas also spent some of their time here and kingBhruthharis path leader Suanath and his disciples made it their home. There are manytemples for Shiva & Shakti. Jalor Fort is one of the most famous and impressive fort. It isthe main attraction of the district. It has four gates (pols) namely Suraj Pol, Dhruv Pol,Chand Pol and the Sire Pol. Tope khana or "the cannon foundry" is also an importantstructure of the district. The building is not in the best of conditions. It was built by"Ujjain King" Vkramditya as a " sansrut Pathshala" for education for his public. But it wasconverted into a Muslim monument by Muslin Emperor Ala ud din Khilji at his time. Thestructure has a spacious forecourt and an intricate faade with tastefully carvedcolonnade and ceiling.
