DifferencesinaudiolevelsbetweenprogramsandchannelsorbetweenprogramsandcommercialsareamajorannoyancetoTVviewers.Whileobvioustotheviewer,theseloudnessdifferenceshaveprovendifficulttomeasurewithconventionalmethodsandequipment.
Foryears,theaudioindustryhasquantifiedthelevelofitsprogrammingusingpeakprogrammeters(PPM)andvolumeunit(VU)meters.Itisimportanttonotethatbothweredevelopedandareusedtoreadsignalvoltages,andthereforemakenoattempttomeasuresubjectiveloudness.Thus,severaldifferentvoices,adjustedinlevelsothattheyalldeflectmeterstothesamemark,maysoundsomewhatdifferentinleveltothelistenerathome.Thisproblemisoftencompoundedbytherapidresponseofthemeter,whichrequiresalloperatorstoperformtheirownindividualvisualintegrationoraveragingofthemetermovementitself.
DolbyMediaMeterfeaturesDialogueIntelligencetechnology,adoptedfromtheawardwinningDolbyDP600andVM600ProgramOptimizer.Thetechnologyautomaticallydetectsandmeasuresloudnessonlyduringthepresenceofspeechinanaudiotrack.EnablingDialogueIntelligenceallowstheoperatortosimplyquantifyallthesectionsoftheprogramthatonlycontaineddialogueandusetheendingmeasurementvalueforanalysisand/ornormalizationpurposes.ThisvalueisalsocommonlyusedtosetthedialoguenormalizationparameterwithinDolbybitstreams.

3.1 Measurement Modes: Short Term vs InfiniteTheDolbyMediaMeterhastwomodesrelatingtothemeasurementperioditself:InfinitemodeandShortTermmode.Thefollowingsectionsdescribetheirbehavior.
3.1.1 Infinite Mode
Infinitemode1istypicallyusedwhenitispossibletomeasuretheentiredurationoftheprogram(forexample,all30secondsofacommercialoracompletetwohourmovie).Infinitemodeprovidesthemostaccuratemeasurement,asitisabletoaverageloudnessoverthecompleteprogramlength.Thismodeismostoftenusediningest,qualitycontrol(QC),andpostproductionapplicationswhereaudiometadataisbeingauthoredandlevelscan,inmostcases,becontrolledandadjusted.
ItisalsopossibletouseInfinitemodetomeasureshorterindividualsectionsofaprogramratherthantheentireduration.Thismethodmayallowtheoperatortofindameasurementvaluemuchmorequickly.Inthiscase,however,theoperatormustensurethattheloudnesslevelsofthesectionsbeingmeasuredarerepresentativeoftheentireprogram.
3.1.2 Short-Term Mode
ShortTermmodedisplaysthemeasuredvalueforthepreviousfewsecondsasaslidingwindowtypeoffunction.UsingDialogueIntelligence,forexample,thefirstmeasurementvalueisforthetimebetween0and10seconds,thenextbetween1and11seconds,nextbetween2and12seconds,andsoforth.UsingEBUR128,themeasurementsareforthreeseconds,ratherthanten.
AstheShortTermmodemeasuresonlytheimmediatelyprecedingtensecondsofprogrammaterial,themeasurementvaluehasthepotentialtobemuchmoredynamicthanthevalueprovidedbyInfinitemodemeasurementforthesamecontent.(Highlyprocessedchannelsandprogrammingwillmostlikelynotexhibitthistypeofbehavior.)
ThebenefitofmeasuringinShortTermmodeisthattheoperatorcanseeshorttermvariationsinloudnesslevel(orshorttermvariationsindialoguelevelwhenDialogueIntelligenceisenabled)withinaprogram.ManyskilledaudiooperatorsprefertousetheShortTermmodemeasurement.Theyfindtheinformationonneartermdynamicstobe

veryusefulwhenmixingorproducingaprogram,andtheyarecapableofmanagingoverallprogramloudnessbyreadingtheshorttermmeasure.
ShortTermmodeisalsoveryusefulformeasuringandloggingthedynamicloudnesshistoryofagivenprogramduringtheQCorpostproductionprocess,orinaparticulartelevisionserviceorchannelinacableheadendfacility.
Choosing a Short-Term Window Length
Somestandardsallowachoiceofshorttermwindowlength,eitherthreeortenseconds.MediaMeterincludesasettingforthischoice,asshowninFigure 33.

3.2 Measuring with the Stand-Alone ProductThestandaloneDolbyMediaMeterapplicationmeasuressourceandencodedfiles.Thesoftwareanalyzestheinput,thendisplaysthemeasuredresultsforuseindeterminingtheproperdialnormmetadatavaluetouseduringencoding.ThisisusefulforDVDandBlurayDiscpostproduction,broadcastfacilities,videoondemand(VOD),moviedownloadservices,andvideogames.
Beforeyoubegintomeasure,checkthedefaultvaluesontheDolbyMediaMetersettingsscreendiscussedinChapter 4.

ClickEnableifyouwanttocreatealogfileofthismeasurement.Reviewthedefaultlogfilenameandlocation,andmakeanyrequiredmodifications.Bydefault,theDolbyMediaMeternamesthelogfilesinput file name-LoudnessEstimation.csvandsavesthefileinthedirectorywheretheinputfilesarestored.SeeReadingtheLogformoredetailsaboutthelogfunction.
4. ClickSpecify Rangetomeasureonlypartoftheselectedfile.Unlessarangeisspecifiedhere,DolbyMediaMetermeasurestheentirefile.Iftimecodeisembeddedinthefiles,themeterwilldefaulttotimecode.Iftimecodeisnotpresent,themeterwilldefaulttorealtime.Highlighteitherorboththebeginningandendfields,andtypenewvaluestochangethem.DolbyMediaMetersupportsallcommonvideoframerates,aswellasframes,seconds,andsamples,inadditiontorealtimemeasurement.
5. ClickMeasuretostartprocessing.
DolbyMediaMeterdisplaysapercentagecompletetallyandprogressbarduringprocessing.Duringmeasurement,theMeasurebuttonchangestoCancel.
Whenmeasuringencodedfiles,DolbyMediaMetercandisplayuptofourdifferentmeasurementtypessimultaneously,asshowninFigure 34.Choosethefromthenineavailableoptionsbyrightclickinginameasurementbox.
Whenmeasurementfinishes,youcanreadthelogorviewthegraph.Formoreinformation,seeReadingtheLogorViewingtheGraph.
Additional Selectors for Dolby TrueHD and Dolby E
WhenaDolbyTrueHDfileischosen,DolbyMediaMeterdisplaystheadditionalselectorshowninFigure 35,allowingyoutochoosewhichpresentationDolbyMediaMetershouldmeasure.Theselectorlistsonlyindependentanddownmixedpresentations.Copiesarenotdisplayed,astheirvaluewouldbeidenticaltothepresentationofwhichtheywereacopy.

3.3 Measuring with the Plug-InsAsanAAXorVSTplugin,DolbyMediaMetermeasuresloudnessinrealtime,lettingyoutracklevelsduringthemixingprocesstoaidinmeetingnetworkdeliveryrequirements.DolbyMediaMetercansimultaneouslydisplayuptosevenoftheninepossiblemeasurementsdescribedinMeasurementsDisplayed.Chooseameasurementtodisplaybyrightclickinginameasurementboxandchoosingfromthecontextmenu.Figure 36showsapluginexample.

DolbyMediaMeterAAXorVSTplugininsertionisperformedonachannelbychannelbasisoninputchannels.Onoutputbuses,themetermaybeinsertedonmono,stereo,ormultichannelbuses.Thenumberofinstancesisnotlimited.
WhenyoumeasurewiththeAAXandVSTplugins,DolbyMediaMeterdoesnotaddtotheinfinitevaluewhilethesessionisstoppedorpaused.Youcanmovealongthesessiontimelineandaddtotheinfiniteaveragebyplayingthroughdifferentsections.Doingsoallowsyoutoaverageovertheentiretimeyouworkonyoursession.Inaddition,thelogfilewillreferencethemeasuremententrieswithanindicationofboththetimecodeofthepartofthesessionbeingmeasuredandthetimeofdaythemeasurementwastaken.
WhenyoumeasurewithAAXandVSTplugins,thegraphdisplaysinrealtime.
Resetting Measurements
ClickReset Alltorestarttheallmeasurements.ClickReset Infinitetoresetonlytheinfinitemeasurement.ResetthedialoguerangeandpeakmeasurementsbyclickingtheResetbuttonbeneaththeappropriatereadout.ClickingLogdisplaysthelogfile.
Note: ProToolsalwaysinsertsAAXandAudioSuitepluginsasprefader.MeasurementswillnotcorrectlymatchthefinalmixedoutputifthemeterisinsertedontheinputsectionofProToolswhenmixautomationispresent.

3.4 Measuring with the AudioSuite Plug-InTheDolbyMediaMeterAudioSuitepluginperformsfilebasedmeasurement,idealformeasuringdialnormvaluesoroverallloudnesswhilepreparingaudioforpackagedmediaformats.
WhenmeasuringwiththeAudioSuitemeter,selectasectionofyoursessiontomeasureinnonrealtimeandpresseithertheRenderorAnalyze button.
UsingtheRender buttontomeasureloudnesscreatesanewaudiofile.(Unlessyouareprocessingthefilewiththelimiter,youmaywishtomanuallydeleteit.)UsingtheAnalyze button,however,performsthesamemeasurementwithoutcreatinganewaudiofile.
Toaveragethemeasurementsofdifferentsections,selectanewsectionofyourtimeline,andpresstheRenderor Analyze buttonagain.Thatsectionwillbeaveragedintothepreviousmeasurement.Ifyoudonotwishtoaveragethedifferentsections,presstheResetbuttonbeforepressingtheRenderor Analyze button.
Ifyouchoosetocreatealogfile,thelogfilewillreferencethemeasuremententriesbyindicatingthetimecodeofthepartofthesessionbeingmeasured.Thisfunctionwillallowyoutotellwhichpartofyoursessionisrepresentedbythegivenmeasurement.
TheAudioSuiteplugincandisplaycansimultaneouslydisplayuptosevenoftheninepossiblemeasurementsdescribedinMeasurementsDisplayed.Chooseameasurementtodisplaybyrightclickinginameasurementboxandchoosingfromthecontextmenu.
TomeasurefasterthanrealtimeintheAudioSuiteplugin:
1. ClickResettorestartthemeasurements.2. ClickLog FiletogenerateandsavealogofDolbyMediaMeteractivity.Reviewthe
defaultfilenameandlocation,andmakeanynecessarychanges.3. Choosethedesiredmeasurementtypes,byrightclickinginameasurementboxand
choosinganotheroptionfromthecontextmenu.4. ClicktheAnalyzeorRenderbutton.
Note: Whenmeasuringmultichannelinputchannels,besuretoselectthechannelroutinginthesettingwindowthatmatchesyoursession.
