Principal’s Message
A Message from Dr. Mars
Worth the WaitSome students were four years old when the renovation to the outside of our building began. As a school community, we learned so much. For example, scaffolding is the metal framework that runs up the building, and bridging is the covered walkway that protects those below. We also learned about patience and persistence and the satisfaction of seeing a job completed.
After nine years, I am pleased to announce that both the bridging and the scaffolding have been removed, and we can see building’s modern facade in near pristine condition!
The project originated to replace the building’s windows as the manufacturer-determined life-span was coming to an end. For a while, plywood covered classroom windows in the winter. The scope of the project expanded as repairs were needed to the facade.
There are many people to thank. I particularly would like to thank our staff and the students who have been patient and accommodating during a project of this size. Also, the School Construction Authority (SCA) has been instrumental in coordinating this task. The Offices of Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Council Member Helen Rosenthall have always been staunch advocates for LaGuardia Arts. There are numerous people who have given their expertise from project planning to the Art Department teachers who methodically researched the color paint that was used. There are still a few ‘punch items’ that need to be corrected and final touches applied.
One teacher expressed how she became a little emotional walking up to the building and seeing it completely uncovered and unobstructed in the morning light. Having the scaffolding down and the bridging removed brings a lightness and an airiness to our environment. It most definitely has been worth the wait to see the beauty of the building as it was originally intended.
Regards,
Dr. Mars, Principal

Guidance/College Readiness
Keep your eye focused on the goalWhile for some, the college
application has been grueling,
and there are plenty of
students still in it. Here are
suggestions to provide a
little focus and be a gentle
reminder…
• Make sure your application is complete. This may be done on line or by phoning an admissions office.
• Be sure that you send your test scores to each school.
• Follow up with your teacher recommenders that they know (and have sent) the required forms to the correct schools.
• Ensure that your Naviance reflects where you are applying to and the status of your applications.
File for Financial Aid
in January1212
A significant factor in determining whether or not a student attends college is… Submitting a
FAFSAComplete and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during January, even if you have to estimate your income and revise the FAFSA later. (There’s a lot more to the process, but we cannot emphasize the importance of completing the FAFSA in January.
Federal and New York State student financial aid is available to help pay for college. In order to receive financial aid you must apply for it every year you attend college.
Always start with free money before taking out a student loan. Grants and scholarships do not have to be paid
back.
NYS’s Higher Education Services Corporation assists you through the Financial Aid process in 6 easy steps.
Step 1: The FAFSAStep 2: New York State TAPStep 3: Other NYS AidStep 4: Institutional AidStep 5: Outside ScholarshipsStep 6: Compare College Award LettersStep 7: Student Loans
To make this manageable, let us just look at Step One:
Completing the FAFSA - the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid - is the first step to financial aid. The information you provide determines whether you are eligible for federal financial aid, and the amount you are qualified to receive. Remember, the FAFSA is free — do not pay for it!
Complete the FAFSA as soon after January 1st as possible. Some financial aid is determined on a first come, first served basis so start as soon as possible.
Apply for a Federal Student Aid Identification Number (FSA ID) online at fsaid.ed.gov to complete and electronically sign your FAFSA and other federal student aid documents. Apply before you start the FAFSA, particularly if you are using the paper FAFSA. Or, apply online while you are completing the online FAFSA and you’ll receive your PIN immediately.
Complete the FASFA online at FAFSA.ed.gov. Step-by-step assistance is available as you complete the form. If you can’t do it online, ask your high school counselor for a paper copy. The FASFA is available in English and Spanish.
You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) once your FAFSA is processed. The SAR will show how much federal aid you are entitled to receive and how much your family can expect to pay. This is your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
Check out this list of documents and information you will need to complete the FAFSA

Junior Art and Music Students Surveyed on Health ProgrammingAs the Program Office prepares for the 2016 - 2017 school year, La! is seeking input from various stakeholder groups on a possible change to the model in which we offer health class.
Juniors were sent a link for them to complete in their LaGuardia Google Account. The survey period is now closed, and information from the stakeholder groups will be considered. The model to be used next year will
appear as part of the usual programming information.
• Keep Health 5-days a week for one semester. (This allows students to be programmed in Study Skills the semester they are not taking Health; this may make your day longer to meet the 7 full periods requirement; PE would still be offered 3/2 days with the option of having Study Skills or taking another class, such as AP Psychology on the opposite days)
• Partner Health with students’ PE classes on non-PE days. (Health would be taken over one year; students may have a shorter day since Health/PE would count towards the 7 complete periods requirement; eliminates Study Skills on non-PE days; AP Psychology would be offered as a year-long AP Science course, taken in lieu of another AP Science course.
The Google Form link was emailed to all students through Pupil Path.
AP FairAll interested ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students are invited to LaGuardia’s AP Fair on Tuesday, January 12, in the seventh-floor cafeteria. Students will have the chance to learn about the opportunities and challenges presented by our school’s AP courses, speak with current AP students and teachers, review course offerings, and ask questions.
Naviance For Junior Parents In preparation for activating and distributing Naviance account information to Junior Parents, it is important that we have the parent’s email registered in Pupil Path. To gain Pupil Path account information, a parent may call Ms. Wilson at ext. 3261 or the Junior may go to Room 201 to pick up the Registration letter. Emails should be entered no later than Monday, January 25.
Scholarships for Summer Programs A&F provides scholarships to underclassmen for summer programs and study. Applications are now available from the A&F Office (Room 853,) Guidance Counselors, and the Studio Offices. As this is a competitive scholarship, please allow plenty of time to complete the application.• •

Evacuation & Fire Drill Safety
Purpose:
To safely and quickly remove all individuals away from the building to a safe location.
To account for every individual in the building, making sure they are in a safe location.
Please reacquaint yourself with the evacuation procedures and routes. Each room has the closes exit posted.
In the event of a fire, smoke, or fire drill, the fire alarm signal will sound, indicating the evacuation of the building:
3 Gongs, 4 times (3-3-3-3); then repeat (3-3-3-3)
In the event of an evacuation, follow the evacuation route designated by the sign in each room.
All school rules apply during the entire drill and in the event of an emergency. Please remember no hats, electronics, cellular phones, or eating are allowed. Items will be confiscated by the teacher or other staff at any point during the
drill.
In a quiet and orderly manner, students will make two lines outside the classroom door.
The teacher is to be at the front of the line leading the students down the stairway quickly, but quietly, outside the building to the designated safety zone.
• Students must remain with their teacher.
• Attendance will be taken by the teacher.
Students are to maintain order, silence, and stay alert to any announcements, instructions, or information given.
Upon hearing ‘all clear’ signal, teachers will lead their students as they re-enter the building and return to the classroom.
The key to a successful fire drill:
• Speed• Safety• Silence
All students must respond silently
and immediately to directions
during emergency drills or actual
emergencies of any kind. Any
student who does not cooperate is
endangering the safety of students
and staff.
If the building is evacuated, you will
be directed to a central meeting
area where you will assemble
according to your OP class. This
will help us locate you in a timely
and efficient manner.
Fire alarm boxes are designed for
easy access for the safety and well
being of all building occupants.
False alarms endanger the lives
of students and staff. Any student
who pulls a fire alarm falsely is in
violation of state and city law, and
will be suspended from school and
subject to arrest and prosecution.

Congratulations to the Class of 2016.
With all of the pomp and circumstance of Senior year, comes a lot of stress. With planning, awareness, and following deadlines, the year will go a lot more smoothly. Please be aware that 100% of all communication regarding your Senior Year will come through either the Weekly Bulletin or PupilPath. Please make a habit of reading all information thoroughly; in an effort to reduce paper use, information may only appear once -- and missing an information item may result in consequences weeks or months down the road.
This issue of the Senior News deals specifically with the required Senior Dues. The Spring Senior News will include all of the specific details for the end of the year, including Graduation, Prom, Awards Ceremonies, etc.
Senior DuesPayment of Senior Dues is mandatory. The full amount of $225 must be paid by Friday, March 4, 2016. (Please note: the incorrect amount of $240 was listed in the previous Weekly Bulletin. Any over payment will be applied to the Senior Prom unless the student requests in writing a refund.) Any Senior Dues paid after this date is subject to a late fee of $10; The late fee for payments received after May 1, 2016, is $20. Dues are mandatory and are non-refundable. Items cannot be purchased individually. Here is what is included with your Senior Dues:
GraduationGraduation payment is included in Senior Dues and includes rental of hall, programs, awards, diploma and case. In addition each eligible graduate will receive two tickets for family members.
Caps and Gowns Includes the cap, gown, and souvenir
tassel. Graduates are fitted by Jostens on the date published in the Weekly Bulletin. Students who are not fitted are given gowns in the closest size available.
YearbookA collection of your everlasting memories of your experiences and friends at La! Our yearbook is over 200 pages in color.Senior LuncheonHeld after one of the Graduation rehearsals, this is the final social event for the Class of 2015. We would like to thank the Parents Association for supplementing the cost of the luncheon.Expenses Associated with the Class of 2016A small amount of money is allocated on Senior Dues to pay for expenses associated with the Senior Class, such as printing and materials for College Office Presentations.Award CeremoniesWhile no scholarships are paid for with Senior Dues, there are expenses associated with presenting both ceremonies.
Paying Senior DuesSenior Dues may be paid in Room 231. We accept cash, check, or money order. Checks should be made out to “LaGuardia High School” with the student’s name in the memo section. Please note, personal checks returned for insufficient funds will be charged an additional $25. Our preference is that payment is made in full; however, we realize that it may be more convenient to make payments. We do have deposits and fees that must be paid within certain time frames, so it is important that your dues are completely paid by March 4, 2016.
If your financial situation is such that you need to make several, smaller payments, that is all right. Please discuss making payments with Ms. Javier, Room 231.You may also pay with a credit card through our school store, located on the school’s home page. To log into the Web Store, your ID number is your 9-digit student ID. Your password is your first name’s initial and last name, ie. JSmith. There is approximately a 7% service charge for using this outside service. You may wish to set up a payment plan with Ms. Javier in Room 231.
If you will be attending Prom, please
pay your Dues early. It makes it less of a burden on your family.
Financial Assistance for Senior Dues If you still need help with senior dues, please bring a letter from your parents making the request for assistance with either half or the entire amount to Dr. Stricklin-Witherspoon’s Mailbox in Room 230 before 4:00 PM on Friday, January 15, 2016.
Additional Graduation TicketsThere are not enough graduation tickets for each student to receive 3, which is why each graduate receives 2. Graduates who pay dues by the deadline will receive one additional ticket. Any remaining tickets will be distributed randomly via a lottery to those students who have completed their Graduation Clearance by the deadline. Please follow the instructions and deadlines that will be distributed later in the year. Extra tickets are distributed at the Senior Luncheon, and a student must be present in order to receive the ticket. We have found this process to be the fairest way to distribute extra tickets, so we do not entertain special requests that circumvent this process.
Seniors should be aware their behavior – both during the school day and at school events -- could effect their participation in the Prom and Graduation. Chancellor’s Regulations state that only students who have successfully completed all requirements for a high school diploma, including the necessary required credits, courses, and standardized tests will be permitted to participate in graduation ceremonies.
Seniors who are suspended at the end of the school year may be denied participation in these events. Please be advised all Senior activities are a privilege, including Prom and Graduation, and can be revoked at any time due to inappropriate behavior, academic failure, or unexcused absences.
Outstanding charges, fees, or lost textbooks may cause delays in receiving Prom or Graduation tickets, caps and gowns, yearbooks, etc.
