Your Duarte Chamber is composed of our community’s leading businesses and civic-minded individuals who devote a portion of their time to planning and activating the Chamber’s many programs and activities. The Chamber was founded in 1921 and incorporated in 1955 as a nonpro t corporation.
Throughout the years, even before the incorporation of Duarte as a city, the Duarte Chamber of Commerce has served as the “front door” to Duarte for visitors, prospective new residents and businesses. We serve as a public relations arm of the city and voice for the business community. Our members enjoy volunteering while they network with other members and have a good time doing so.
The Chamber’s funds are received from membership dues, special events, and a city contract for services which are for the purpose of carrying out our mission statement. The Chamber also helps the city of Duarte ensure progressive and orderly economic development in order to make Duarte a better place to live, work and enjoy. The Chamber’s strength lies in its membership; the Chamber accomplishes collectively what no one could do individually.
The Duarte Chamber’s scope of activities is virtually unlimited, depending upon the needs of the community.
The Chamber is responsible for publishing the Duarte View, Duarte’s only hometown newspaper; Chamber Spotlight, a television show which features two di erent member businesses each show; and a map and business directory for Duarte. With the support of the
city of Duarte, we sponsor the annual Taste of Duarte, a business expo and food tasting of local restaurants and purveyors. As a Chamber we host monthly networking breakfasts held at member businesses as well as periodic business mixers, sometimes in partnership with other Chambers. These monthly events give our members even more opportunities to network and market their businesses.
The programs and policies of the Duarte Chamber of Commerce are established by an 18-member Board of Directors. The Board employs a President/CEO to be the administrative o cer of the Chamber.
Membership in the Duarte Chamber of Commerce is open to all businesses, schools, nonpro ts and individuals. Together we create our kind of Chamber in our kind of town!
CHAMBER MISSION STATEMENTThe Duarte Chamber of Commerce exists to create an environment that will promote and encourage businesses to succeed while enhancing its relationship with the surrounding community.

The City of Duarte is a city that lives up to its motto, “The City of Health.” Our city is host to numerous parks and recreation facilities and a world-renowned cancer research center. All are dedicated to improving the physical and mental well-being of its residents.
Duarte is a small but thriving community
nestled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, next to the San Gabriel River. The City of Duarte also o ers historic buildings, a majestic view of the San Gabriel range, the oldest avocado tree in California, and even a song written about one of its streets!

LOCATION & TRANSPORTATIONThe City of Duarte is a small and progressive
community located approximately 21 miles northeast of Los Angeles. At 6.8 square miles and a population exceeding 21,000, Duarte isn’t the biggest city in the San Gabriel Valley, but it just might be the best.
Located where the 210 Freeway and the northern terminus of the 605 Freeway meet, the area o ers direct access to the San Gabriel and San Fernando valleys, Long Beach and the Inland Empire. The 210 (Foothill) Freeway ows through Duarte and connects the city to the full metropolitan freeway system and transcontinental highways making both commuting and goods shipment convenient.
The soon to be completed Metro Gold Line light-rail extension, with a station located across from the City of Hope, will connect workers and travelers very conveniently to the rail transportation network throughout Los Angeles County.
Duarte is a richly diverse community of stable neighborhoods and friendly neighbors. Lush green foothills, parks, hiking and bike
trails and beautiful new social and recreational gathering places enhance the livability of the community.

HISTORY
The Gabrielino Indians once inhabited the land that is now known as the City of Duarte. In 1841, the governor of Alta, California, granted to ex-Mexican Corporal Andres Duarte nearly 7,000 acres of prime land in the upper San Gabriel Valley. He named the place Rancho Azusa de Duarte.
In the mid-1800s, most of the Rancho was sold to help defray Andres Duarte’s debts. One of those who purchased land was Dr. Nehemiah Beardslee, who started the rst school in Duarte. The remaining land was divided into 40-acre plots and sold individually.
Many of our earliest pioneer families came to Duarte in the mid-1800s for their health, the pleasant climate, and the fertile soil. English settlers, Americans from the Midwest and Deep South, Latinos who remained from the Rancho, and Japanese immigrants all enabled Duarte to grow into a thriving agricultural community specializing in citrus production.
Two of the country’s premier medical institutions began in Duarte in the early part of the 20th century. In 1928, the Jewish Relief Association started a tuberculosis sanitarium just south of Duarte Road. This later evolved into the world-renowned City of Hope Medical Center, a recognized leader in ghting cancer and other catastrophic diseases.
In 1957, a dedicated group of community members led the ght for incorporation, and on Aug. 22, 1957, their e orts paid o with the formation of the City of Duarte and the Duarte Uni ed School District. The leadership of the Duarte City Council and the Duarte Uni ed School District Board of Trustees helped the previously fragmented community to come together, set goals and establish priorities for the newly created City of Duarte.
HISTORICAL DUARTEA small group of dedicated Duarte residents
formed the Duarte Historical Society in the early
1950s with a goal of preserving the city’s past and sharing its colorful history with the public. For years, treasured artifacts were moved from one cramped location to another, often collecting dust in storage. But today the Society proudly invites the public to visit the Duarte Historical Museum at 777 Encanto Pkwy.
The elegant white house, circa 1920, was sold to the Society for $1 by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints with the agreement that it would be moved from its site at Royal Oaks and Cotter to make way for a new church. On a Saturday morning in June 1988, the house was moved along Huntington Drive while residents looked on in excitement and awe as the future museum, cut in half, was moved by truck inch by inch through town. The Society members rolled up their sleeves and started to work in putting the house back together and making it ready to be a museum.
On a warm spring day in 1991, hundreds of Duarteans ocked to Encanto Park to celebrate its grand opening. Since that day the exhibits have been expanded, a museum sign erected, and landscaping has helped make the house look like a home.
Today, the Historical Society is a strong and active group still dedicated to preserving Duarte’s past. The museum is the center of a variety of activities from lectures to bird walks to art shows. Classes from local schools, as well as scouting groups, are received at the museum by special appointment. The museum’s library contains a wealth of information about local history. The museum also sells a video on Duarte’s history as well as postcards, t-shirts and other memorabilia.
The Duarte Historical Museum can be visited on the rst and third Wednesdays of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

HOMES
PARKS & RECREATION
Duarte’s housing varies widely from a ordable homes to expensive showplaces. Condos/townhomes, homes adjacent to the Rancho Duarte Golf Course, and executive style-homes on the Duarte Mesa with sweeping panoramic views are just a few of the many options for homebuyers.
Seventy percent of all homes in Duarte are
owner-occupied, leaving only 30 percent for the rental market. Home ownership creates more pride in a community and that is evident when driving through Duarte’s residential neighborhoods.
Both location and economics create an opportunity for a home for nearly everyone in Duarte.
The City of Duarte is home to 16 well-maintained parks recreation facilities, including a fully equipped tness center, the historic Fish Canyon Trail, a modern recreation center at Royal Oaks Park and more. A year-round program of recreational activities for people of all ages is provided by the city Parks and Recreation sta in the parks, the Senior Center and the Teen Center.
The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for youth sports, adult sports,
special events, recreation classes, senior, youth and adult excursions, cultural events, senior services and programs, the tness center, teen services programs, Club Kids Day Care and aquatics.
The Parks and Recreation Department is also responsible for maintenance of all city facilities. This includes repairs to buildings and park sites, custodial services, supervision of activities held in city facilities, and overseeing contractual maintenance agreements.

TOURISM
Visitors and tourists in the Duarte area will nd accommodations to suit every need and budget. Hotels, motels, extended-stay, and executive facilities are all located nearby. The region is known for outstanding lodgings that accommodate travelers all year long.
The area o ers direct access to the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys, the City of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and the Inland Empire. Area lodgings are convenient to the four airports within 30 miles of Duarte, Disneyland, California Adventure, Knotts Berry Farm, Magic Mountain and Santa Anita Race Track. Beaches and mountain recreation areas are within easy reach. Many nearby state parks also o er outstanding accommodations, lodges, campgrounds, and more.
There are several major San Gabriel Valley events held in Duarte each year.
In May there is the Taste of Duarte and Business Expo presented by the Duarte Chamber of Commerce. This event features over 90 local restaurants and businesses and is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to discover and sample the uniqueness of our community. Information is available at www.TasteofDuarte.com.
In September we have the Salute to Route 66 Parade, Picnic and Classic Car Show presented by the Duarte Community Coordinating Council
Route 66 Parade Committee and the City of Duarte. Believed to be the only annual parade of its kind this festive event has included participants from around the world, world famous grand marshals, marching bands from throughout southern California, and classic cars galore. The rst parade, held in 1996, featured as its grand marshal the late Bobby Troup, composer of the song “Get Your Kicks on Route 66.” Information about the parade is available at www.DuarteRoute66Parade.com.
Duarte has an excellent mix of cuisines. Italian, Mediterranean, Asian and Mexican are well-represented, American style restaurants serve plenty of comfort foods. A number of distinctive restaurants o er a variety of dining experiences (both formal and casual) within minutes of homes and lodgings.
Whatever the mood and no matter how much time, there’s always something to satisfy everyone’s schedule and taste buds.

EDUCATION
Education is a cornerstone in the Duarte community. The learning landscape of the city is led by the Duarte Uni ed School District, a public, K-12 education system serving approximately 4,700 area students each year. The district is composed of ve elementary schools, one intermediate school, one high school and one alternative education campus – all of which o er a challenging, 21st century learning environment conducive to student success. As a testament to this, Duarte High School is working in partnership with Citrus College, the area community college, in programs where high school seniors are enrolled in college classes to fast-track the higher education pursuit.
In addition to the mainstream curriculum, the district o ers such programs as Head Start/State Preschool, before- and after-school care, adult education and others. For more information, contact the Duarte Uni ed School District.
Additional quality education is also available through private schools in Duarte, including Duarte Montessori School, Foothill Oaks Academy, Inspire Charter Schools, Maryvale Family Resource & Early Education Center, and Opportunities for Learning Public Charter Schools.

The years since its incorporation have seen Duarte develop from a primarily agricultural community into a ourishing urban one. Services, manufacturing and trades are among the leading industries in Duarte, which hosts such major employers as the City of Hope National Medical Center, Walmart, Target Stores, Ralph’s Grocery Store, Santa Teresita Medical Center, Advantage Ford Lincoln and Nissan of Duarte.
Shop Duarte is a phrase you hear often in the city. When you Shop Duarte, you help businesses and return sales tax dollars to the local economy, which enables the city to enhance services. Duarte has small shops and large, nationally known stores. In addition, the Central Avenue Automobile Complex boasts some of the highest sales gures of new and used cars in the state and country.
Although Duarte remains a primarily residential community, the city’s proactive development e orts make it an ideal place to locate or expand a business. The city takes pride in the attractive and balanced commercial developments found throughout the community. In 2012 the City of Duarte received the prestigious “Most Business Friendly City”
Award with a population of 60,000 and under in Los Angeles County by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).
Duarte is also a special place for small, ambitious companies. The reasons are clear: a location central to the entire Southern California basin, reasonable costs, a skilled labor pool, and business-friendly local government.

Health care plays a large role in the Duarte community. With the famous City of Hope Cancer Center located here, people travel from around the world for some of the most successful and innovative treatments from top cancer specialists.
Known for pioneering in the development of bone marrow transplantation which has saved countless lives, the Cancer Center also places a great deal of emphasis on the patient’s emotional, spiritual and social well-being. Patients at City of Hope experience the very real healing powers of compassion and understanding.
The City of Hope is one of only 40 National
Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. From common to rare cancers, the City of Hope o ers appointments for a second opinion, or a video on advances in cancer treatment at (800) 826-HOPE.
The community is also served by the emergency medical services provided by Methodist Hospital in nearby Arcadia. In addition, the Samaritana Medical Clinic provides family medicine, and the Santa Teresita Medical Center has medical clinics, doctor and dental o ces, and a full array of medical facilities with a variety of specialists to serve the citizens of Duarte and the surrounding communities.
City Council meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Community Center at Duarte City Hall, 1600 Huntington Dr. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
One of the most utilized city facilities is the Duarte Public Safety/Sheri ’s Satellite Station. This facility houses City Code Enforcement, Animal Control o cers and the Los Angeles County Sheri ’s deputies. Having the Satellite o ce in Duarte has helped control crime and make Duarte one of the safest cities in the San Gabriel Valley.
