So….. Who’s winning the war?
THE SOUTH
What happens if the North doesn’t win a battle soon???
1. The South might gain the support of European nations such as England.
2. Northern citizens might grow weary of the war and elect Democratic politicians who would make peace with the South.
The South will be recognized with as a separate nation.
“My paramount object is to save the Union. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save the Union by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery….I do because I believe it helps save the Union.”-Abe Lincoln to abolitionist leader Horace Greely
Lincoln’s PlanSet the slaves free in order to weaken the Southern economy
But…….
The North has to win a battle first so Lincoln frees the slaves from a position of power and doesn’t seem desperate.
