The F&W Story, Part the Second After the ir fi rst album tour, during which our dynamic duo spent a lot of time dr iving and slightly less time playing, Stephen
and Andy entered a whole new health regime based upon a heady mix of toast-eating and hot yoga, in preparation for theirfollow-up recording.
The first album was written in short bursts over several years, so the second would definitely need a different approach. They didn’twant to leave it too late - Stephen had discovered mini Altoids and needed refills. Andy’s elite frequent flyer status was in danger ofslipping. The guys decided to write the album in two longer sessions, at opposite ends of Canada.
Andy flew from windswept Dublin into a Halifax blizzard in January 2011. He unpacked his baby 12 string, Stephen plugged in hisamp and the songs came quickly, interrupted only by a Boys Night Out in a man cave and a nasty conflagration over the placement of
a preposition or two. That summer, Stephen flew to Vancouver, Andy arrived from Melbourne, and the lads were soon to be found in a UBC lecture room, rehearsing their live set, refining the songs started in Halifax, and starting a second batch.
After playing the Vancouver Folk Festival, the two reconvened in a Frida Kahlo-themed villa on beautiful Salt Spring Island, whereevery second person is a potter. Stephen saved himself and Andy was accosted by a hippy. They finished the album in a creative burstassisted by a combination of fresh fruit, romantic dreams and unreliable wi-fi.
Stephen and Andy reconvened in in Guelph, recording at Scott’s place once again. Gary came to play drums, bringing Cuban cigars
and a bottle of Bushmills. Stephen had a significant birthday and made doorstep sandwiches. Andy texted in the snow and let the catin. And out. And in again. Two weeks later, the second album was finished. It’s brash and sensitive, written in winter and summer, in times of trouble,
thoughtfulness and laughter - on bass and electric, as well as acoustic guitars. It includes the most traditional ‘Fearing & White’ songas well as the loudest.
If you hear the throbbing roar of a hire car full of guitars coming round the corner, Stephen and Andy are sure to be playing some-where near you in the not-too-distant future. Be sure you meet them at eight, for tea and confidences.

Secret Of A Long-Lasting Love
What is the secret of a long lasting loveForever, till death do us part
When I’m out here travelling and you stay at home And it’s weighing heavy on my heartWith all this desire and the best of intentionsWon’t someone come up with a sure-fire invention
That fits in your hand like a soft satin glove And holds the secret of a long-lasting love
I was born at the start of the summer of loveI grew up in a world full of change
Everybody I met was out looking for truth
Some of them never made it home againMy parents were kids when they started a familyMarried on Monday divorced on SaturdayNo place to turn when push came to shove
They never learned the secret of a long-lasting love
I knew when I saw you, I wanted it all The future to have and to holdFor better or worse till the sun goes down
And paints this little town goldSo hold onto me darling
At the end of the day You give me your heartI won’t throw it away
And we’ll build us a dream that’s strong enough To carry the secret of a long-lasting love
Saint Christopher’s with me wherever I go And a picture of you always brings me homeWhere two lovers kiss and the moon up aboveShines down on the secret of a long-lasting love
Another Time Another Place
There was a timeWhen I left it all unspokenI could only keep things to myself
You think I could tellSay these words without jokingBut I was young and foolish about love
Another time, another placeI know I will see her faceWhen everything is right
I’m going to find that girl

When you are young And your heart is unb roken You can only think about yourself You never believe That the moment will comeWhen you will need to lean on someone else
Another time, another placeI know I will see her faceWhen everything is rightI’m going to find that girl
When the first morning lightPaints the dark out of the nightWhen everything is right
I’m going to find that girl
So many peopleLooking for something
Tumbling in the darkHow can I go on living without youWithout falling apart
Another time, another placeI know I will see her faceWhen everything is rightI’m going to find that girl
When the first morning lightPaints the dark out of the nightWhen everything is rightI’m going to find that girl
When everything is right
I’m going to find you
This Isn’t Hollywood
Smokin’ in doorways and laughingRockin’ and rollin’I wonder what went wrong
She’s been runnin’ her whole life longDominique told me thatShe would do anything to be freeSo she hitched a ride
Through the West Coast night
I drove to CaliforniaI tried every cornerWant to make it rightI was studying facesIn a Greyhound stationWhen I realized
This isn’t Hollywood
Tattooed in rosesShe turned her back on the sadnessShe saw in her Mum and Dad
And all the things they’d had
Making it, faking it goldenLoving the feeling ofLiving on your ownBeats a broken home
I drove to CaliforniaWhere everything’s warmerIn the neon light
I’m trying to tell you
Don’t buy what they sell you’Cause when you close your eyes
This isn’t Hollywood
Wearing your dreams on your sleeveUnder your skinI still see the other girlShe came from a different world
Smokin’ in doorways and laughingRockin’ and rollin’She looks a lot like youWithout a rose tattoo
I drove to CaliforniaWe talked on the cornerUnder neon lightI want you to come with me
You’ve so much to give meIn this real life
This isn’t Hollywood
To The Great UnknownForget about religion
And books are not enoughSay a prayerFor all the little thingsI don’t know whyOr what tomorrow brings
Like a ship out on the oceanLike a child under the starsSay a prayer
To the great unknown
I don’t know howWe ended up aloneI believe we will find our wayBack home
Remember when you were youngEvery picture painted clearSay a prayer
Time is passing onI don’t why
The future takes so long That’s the starWe’ve been following
Carried on the wind The circle spinsWhere do we belongOnly you and meNo certainty
To this dreaming on
When evening steals the sky And time is running downSay a prayerEvery year that passes byI don’t know whyEvery hour that’s come and gone

You, you went away You went away The sky turned grey for youLike February Oh, when the angels cameI was standing there, like an empty roomWithout you
Oh, they reached out to me Then they smiled at me And they left me here without youWithout you
You said you’re coming back You were coming back This love was made for you

Think Of Me Like Summer
I can’t make you love me Though I know you care There’s flies on the windshieldDust in my hair
I can’t take you with me Though you know I wanted toEvening falls magenta
And the ocean deep and blue
Think of me like summer All the timeOutdoors drinking wineWith your ice-cream smileCrickets in the cedars keeping time
Think of me like summer
I can’t make you love me Though I know you couldSo when you’re thinking of me
Think of me like summer
You treated me like familyShowed me who you are
You opened up your heart to meWe were talking at the bar
Fall in the airIn the leavesIn the forestFall in your hairIn the wingsOf the birdsFlying over us
Think of me like summer All the time Think of me like summerOutdoors drinking wine
Think of me like summerWith your ice-cream smile
Think of me like summerCrickets in the cedars keeping time
Think of me like summerI can’t make you love me
I can show you that I care
I got room in my heartI want you to be there
I can’t make you love me Though I know you couldSo when you’re thinking of me
Think of me like summer
Save Yourself
If you want me You want me You want me to tell youWhere we’re going wrong
Do you need me
Do you need meDo you need me to paint you a pictureWhere you belong
Every time that we were good togetherPromises whispered down the lineIn the distance
You could taste it And you waited all this time
Save yourself, yourselfFrom the crooked hand of disappointmentSave yourself, yourself
This time save yourselfFor me
You called me You were wasted
You were poisoned by the darkness in your heart

Emigrant song
Fare thee well, my one and onlyI am travelling overseas
For my country doesn’t want me And my faith is on its knees
I will follow every highway Through the streetlights and the chrome To find a city where someone needs me And a place to call my own
On Sunday night, I was in DublinIt was the last day of the yearWalking though a concrete wasteland
All that ancient hope and fear
There was nothing left to reach for To pull myself out of the frayI got my ticket now, and I am leavingSo don’t watch me walk away
Fare thee well, my fickle homeland
Always loved you from the firstFare thee well, beautiful countryEven when you’re at your worst
When the rain falls in VancouverSomething makes me look awayLike every emigrant, I still love you
This is why I cannot stay
Eighth Wonder Of The World
I was accosted by a hippy
He promised me the eighth wonder of the world Things got kind of trippy As the rubber bands un furledHe said “Close your eyes”He asked if I was epileptic
To my complete surprise The kaleidoscope turned the scep tic
It was the eighth wonder The eighth wonder of the worldMy magic numberI was counting on the eighth wonder of the world
I was enchanted by a modelShe promised me the eighth wonder of the worldI thought it would be a doddle
As she preened and posed and bounced and twirledShe took me to her condoShe said “Close your eyes”
While a man named Armando Took my wallet and unzipped my flies
She was the eighth wonder The eighth wonder of the worldMy magic numberI was dazzled by the eighth wonder of the world
I was smoking in a ghetto A poet promised me the eigh th wonder of the worldHe spoke in a falsettoUnder a purple sky as the sidewalk swirledHe said “Close your eyes”
Then he asked for a donationImagine my surpriseI was reincarnated as a blonde Alsatian
I was the eighth wonder The eighth wonder of the world Though I’m scared of thunderI’m barking, I’m the eighth wonder of the world
Everybody’s searching for a philosophyEverybody’s gonna have to wait and see
’Cause we’re the eighth wonder
The eighth wonder of the worldWe’re the magic numbersI’m counting on the eighth wonder of the world
