A MONTH since the Nhlazatshe IslamicSchool was shut down by communitymembers, amidallegationsof anumber
ofunresolvedissues,woescontinuetoaffecttheIslamic schools.
On Monday, pupils from the EdendaleIslamic School had to be sent back home aftera group, claiming to be parents at the school, picketed outside the building, demanding theexpulsion of principal Ian Khan whom theyaccuse of autocracy.
However Khan said that this was a politicalploy to get rid of him, having served the schoolfor 14 years without any complaints.
Community members say that after theshutdown of Nhlazatshe Islamic school, Khan, whoisaprincipalatboththeseschools, sentoutletters to parents of pupils from EdendaleIslamic School informing them that the schoolwas shutting down, without informing theboard. However Khan refuted the claims, saying the school was being shut down by acommittee from the community.
Speaking to Echo, a resident who did notwanttobeidentifiedsaid:“Wedonotknowwholeaked the information but Khan was alreadyaware that we were planning to demand hisexpulsion, sohemade the firstmovebywritingletters to parents saying that the school wasshutting down, as community members hadthreatened to shut it down.
“We are totally against disrupting teaching
and learning, especially since it is near examtime. The only person that wewant out is him.The school that was shutdown last month canre-open tomorrow, provided that Khan isremoved. There is a school board that issupposed to make decisions, but some thingsare implemented without their knowledge.”
Residents said that they approached theprincipal suggesting the formation of a SchoolGoverning Body (SGB), like other schools, buthe refused.
“There are somany problems at both theseschools, however our main problem isautocracy. He does not take kindly tosuggestions, and we cannot work withsomeone like that,” said a concerned parent.
Responding to the allegations, Khan saidthat the school does not have an SGB becauseit has an open door policy.
“Anyconcernsaredealtwithparentsdirect-ly or through circulars. Community membershadapproachedmeabout the formation of theSGB but it was people who had no interest inthe education of the children and they wereasking questions irrelevant to the education ofchildren. The same people were supposed tocome back to a follow up meeting about thisproposal, but they did not. I have served theschoolforabout14years,andit isonlynowthatthey are complaining.
“This isapoliticalploybypeopleIknowwhowanttotakeownershipoftheschool.Theyevenmentioned that the school is not registered, when in fact we are registered and in theprocess of getting accredited by Umalusi.”

Havingstartedher teachingcareer in1997,Hlengiwe Mfeka realised that there wereseveral challenges facedbypupils fromunder-resourced schools.
Withthesupportofher husbandKhulekani, she was encouraged to enrol for a FurtherDiplomainEducationspecializingincomputerliteracy. She then introduced ComputerApplication Technology (CAT) as a subject atMconjwana High School, which led to theestablishment of a fully fledged computerlaboratory at the school.
In 2009, she won the Microsoft InnovativeTeacher Award. Having taught for 11 years,shejoinedSchoolNetSAin2010andiscurrent-ly the project manager for ICT for the RuralEducation Development Project.
Hermain focus is developing teachers fromrural areas in the ICT sector.
“My passion is to influence a broadercommunity of teachers who in return, willcontribute to the quality of education in SouthAfrica. The digital divide is an enormouselephant which requires working together toconquer theneedsofunderprivilegedcommu-nities.
“There are also interventions andinitiatives in progress to empower and inspirewomen to participate in the IT industry in ourcountry.”
Advisingaspiring teachers,Mfeka said thatbeinga teachermeans tobea selfless adaptivelife-long learner, who influenceshis orher en-vironment.
“Teaching provides a privilege of shapingthe future of the country bymodelling away oflife that pupils can emulate. This is a privilegeunique to teaching and should be taken seri-ously at all times”.
Speaking to teachersas theycelebrate theirmonth, she said that teaching is a calling andthere is no money that will ever be enough topay for what a teacher does.

Drought-hitKZN regionsdeclareddisaster areasTHE uMgungundlovu District Municipalityis one of the eight regions in KwaZulu-Na-
tal that have been declared disaster areasafter having been hit by severe droughts.
The KZN Department of Co-operativeGovernance and Traditional Affairs(Cogta) has welcomed the decision by theprovincial cabinet to accept its recommen-dations to declare disaster areas in allregions of the province affected by thedrought.
“The effects of droughts are now treat-ed as an emergency, with all our capacitybeing placed at the disposal of theaffected regions. The declaration ofdisaster areas also opens the way for
additional assistance and funding for KZNfrom the national government,” said KZNMEC for Cogta Nomusa Dube-Ncube in apress release on Friday.
The other regions most affected bydrought and declared disaster areas areuMkhanyakude, uThungulu, Ilembe,Zululand, Harry Gwala, uMzinyathi anduThukela.
All of them have received rainfall wellbelow normal and this has affected waterlevels in various catchments.
“Our preliminary assessment ofdamages to the province, especially to live-
stock and crops, currently stands atR400-million, but this is by no means thefinal tally as our assessment teamscontinue to take stock of the water crisison the ground,” said Dube-Ncube.
As an interim solution, municipalitiesare supplying water tankers and Jojo tanksthroughout the affected regions, howeverthis is putting additional pressure on theprovince’s resources as these services nowhave to be extended to areas which, undernormal circumstances, will have sufficientwater supplies.
Drought is linked to climate change
and it is a force of nature. It has been of concern to government
that some communities have respondedto water shortages with service deliveryprotests.
“We plead with communities tounderstand the natural phenomenonof the drought disaster we are faced withand ask of them to play their part byconserving the little water that is still beingprovided to enable us to continue with ourday-to-day businesses,” continuedDube-Ncube.

SUCCESS STORYMy name is Priya (43 years), from Howick,Pietermaritzburg. From the bottom of my heart Ithank Mr Baka for saving my marriage. My husbandof 12 years had been taken away from me by anotherwoman. After moving from one herbalist to anotherwithout any success, a colleague at work told meabout Mr Baka. I went there and within three days myhusband came back, using water and a mirror, Bakaalso showed me all my enemies. I have no other wayto thank this man, only to tell the whole world abouthim. He can also boost business, chase bad spellsand tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more.
