Lesson Overview

Faith Calls for PerseveranceThe Boldness—The Book of Hebrews tells us Christians can con-

fidently stand before God and present their petitions to Him. All

God’s children have the privilege of pouring out their hearts to Him,

talking with Him, and receiving personal answers. The Blood—Before Christ’s death, a thick veil separated the Holy Place

from the Most Holy Place, the room in the temple symbolizing God’s presence. If anyone were to go into the Most Holy Place other than the

high priest, it meant certain death. The high priest entered once a year on

the Day of Atonement with sacrificial animal blood on his hands. He was

the only one who could enter, and this was the only way to approach God

to ask for the removal of the people’s sins (Lev. 16:11-17). When Christ hung His head and died on the cross, the temple veil tore

from top to bottom, without any human effort! It was as if God Himself

declared, “My Son Jesus destroyed the dividing wall between Myself and

man.” No more sacrifices are needed to reconcile God to man. Instead we

can come to Him with arms outstretched like a little child, saying, “Thank

You, Daddy.” The Believers—The Book of Hebrews encourages brothers and sisters

in Christ, as much as possible, to gather together to encourage each other

with the promises stated in the Bible. Jesus will return soon. Brothers and

sisters need to constantly pray about ways to love and help each other stay

committed and grow in the Lord. The Ban—The Gospel message is all over television, billboards, and

the Internet, yet many people are still deceived and blinded. “I’ll get into

heaven my way,” they think, by giving money, going to church, trying to

be good—all manmade ways to try to reach heaven. But God is serious;

there is only one way into His presence. The blood of Jesus has paid the

price of our sins.

This week begins a quarter that covers the first 26 chapters of Genesis, from Creation to the life of Isaac. Unit 1 lessons show God as the wise and caring Creator.

God created the world. First He made light to shine in the darkness and declared the light to be day and the darkness night. Later He created the sun, moon, and stars, and set up the seasons, days, and years, beginning time as we know it. And He saw that what He had done was good.

The details of Creation are some of today’s most disputed issues in Christian circles. There are many different interpretations of the first two chapters of Genesis. Why? Partly because Genesis does not give detailed scientific explanations about the how of Creation.

However, the Bible leaves no doubt about the who of Creation: “In the beginning God created . . .” And we know His creative work was done in a purposeful, orderly manner.

The early earth was without form until the Spirit of God moved upon it, refining and modeling it (Gen. 1:2). It was also dark, for there was no light until God created it. When God spoke the command, there was light (vs. 3). Then God separated the light and the dark and called them day and night. He brought order out of confusion.

The light on the first day may have come from a source known only by God, because no specific light sources are mentioned until the fourth day (Gen. 1:14-19). On that day God created the sun, moon, and stars and gave them orderly movements so they would govern our days and nights, seasons and years.

God created light, and it was good. He established a cycle of light and darkness perfectly suited for the human beings He would soon create: daytime for waking activities and nighttime for rest. It’s great to know we serve that same God—the giver of all spiritual and physical light.

Understanding the Bible

Classroom TipsHere are some suggestions to get you and the new students off to a great start:

there is nothing as reassuring as the sound of your own name. the name tags (Kid Craft Project for lesson 1) will help you learn and use each child’s name. make one for yourself, too.

If you have an enrollment list available for your use prior to the beginning of class, your students will appreciate knowing they are expected and welcome. Prepare the attendance poster teaching aid with your students’ names. then you can greet them: “Welcome, amy. see, here’s

your name right here. I’ve been expecting you!” show your students how they can mark their attendance each week.

try using a buddy system. match a child who appears to be comfortable with a child who seems shy or fearful. If you have both second and third graders in your class, you might give each second grader a third-grade buddy.

take time each week to get to know the materials you’ll be using. If you know your lesson backward and forward, you’ll be able to relax and be more attentive to your student’s feelings.

Understanding Your Studentsstarting a new class can be both exciting and a little frightening! If you’re beginning this quarter with one or more children who are unfamiliar with you or with the other children in the class, those two feelings are most likely present in your classroom. you’ll find them hiding behind wide eyes and occasionally a tear or two. so how do you use this excitement and calm the fears to make your first class of the fall quarter a comfortable time for everyone?

Page 6: Echoes Elementary

elementary | lesson 110

Begin class with the name tags from the Project for Lesson 1 in Elementary Kid Crafts.

Give students time to share about themselves. How many have the same favorite season or food? .

After getting to know each other a little bit, move into an activity about daytime and nighttime to prepare for the Bible story.

Designate one side of the room as daytime. The other side of the room is nighttime.

We can divide each day, 24 hours, into daytime and nighttime. Different activities happen during the daytime and nighttime. Let’s play a game about daytime and nighttime. I will name an activity. You move quickly to the side of the room, the daytime side or the nighttime side, that tells when you would do that activity. Name each activity given below pausing between each one until the children are done moving. Don’t talk about their choices at this time.

•Puttingonyourpajamas. (Nighttime.)

•Eating breakfast. (Daytime.)

•Brushing your teeth. (Daytime or nighttime.)

•An owl’s favorite time to hunt. (Nighttime.)

•A good time to see a rainbow. (Daytime.)

•Your regular bedtime. (Nighttime.)

•A good time to see shooting stars. (Nighttime.)

•Eating lunch. (Daytime.)

•PrayingandreadingtheBible. (Daytime and nighttime.)

Gather the children back into a group. Talk through the following questions. Give each child an opportunity to share his or her thoughts.

What are things you do in the daytime?

What are things you do in the nighttime?

Which is your favorite time, daytime or nighttime? Answers will vary.

I’m glad we have both daytime and nighttime. We need both. Today’s Bible story tells us of when God created day and night.

Distribute the new copies of My Bible Book. Briefly look over the “Peek Ahead” feature on the inside front cover. Then have students look at the “My Bible Words” feature on page 3. You will find a page like this in each lesson to introduce key words that will help your children understand the Bible story. Explain that this

feature will show what life was like in Bible times, as well as introduce new Bible words.

Today’s Bible words are “beginning” and “creator.” Can you find these two words on the page? These words are printed separately in bold letters and underlined each time they are used in a sentence. Hold up a copy of My Bible Book and point to the various parts of the page as you read aloud the definitions and speech balloons. This will help your students follow along in their books.

Before we turn to our Bible story, let’s practice finding Bible verses. Hand out a Bible and a copy of the Bible Code Victors Reproducible (Teaching Aid 3) to each child. (Have them available throughout the quarter for children who need help finding a Bible verse.)

Work through the Bible Code Victors Reproducible to find John 3:16. Then use the information to find and mark Genesis 1:3-5. Have them bookmark these verses for later use.

Turn to Genesis 1; explain that this week’s story comes from the beginning of the Bible. You may tell the story in your own words, read from your Bible, or use the following version.

Our Bible story tells about the beginning of everything and the Creator who made it all.

BiBle sTory In the beginning the world was very different from the way it is now. There was no day or night, there were no oceans or mountains, there were no people or animals. In fact, there was nothing, except God! But He planned something wonderful to change that.

In the beginning everything was dark and empty. When God decided to change this, He created something. Let’s read together Genesis 1:3-5 from our Bibles.

What did God create? (light, day and night)

God said, “Let there be light,” and there was! God looked at what He created, and He saw that it was good. God called the light “day,” and He called the darkness “night.” So there was evening and there was morning—the first day.

But God wasn’t finished yet; His plan was just beginning. On the fourth day, God also created some special lights.

What do you think these special lights were? (Allow guesses, but have students listen to the story for the answer.)

God said, “Let there be lights in the sky to separate the day from the night.” And it was so. The biggest light in the sky was the sun. It shone and gave light during the day. The other big light in the sky was the moon. The smaller lights were the stars. The moon and the stars shone and gave light during the night.

The world was no longer dark and empty! There was darkness and light. There was night and day. And there were lights in the sky that would shine even during the night!

God created what we need. He made night, and He

made day. He made the sun for day and the moon and stars for night. God looked at what He made and it was good. So now we have a time to rest, and we have a time to work and play. God is a good Creator.

BiBle reViewIn today’s Bible story we heard about the

beginning of the world and how God created light, day. and night. Let’s talk a little bit more

about what God created in today’s story. Have students turn to page 4 in My Bible Book. Ask your class what God made and have them read the title together to answer your question.

Read the first sentence aloud and give students time to circle the picture of the sun. Read the next sentence aloud, pausing to allow students to circle the

pictures of the moon and stars. Next, read the question and write in the first day.

Peoplecanbecreatorstoo.Someofthelightson this page are made by people.

Which lights can people make? (Light bulbs, candles, flashlights, lamps.)

Peoplecanmakelightstoo, butonlyGodcould create lights as big and wonderful as the sun, the moon, and all the stars.

What day of Creation did God make light? (The first day.)

What did God use to create the sun, moon, and stars? (His words.)

How does God view His creation that He made justfromHiswords? (God saw that it was good.)

MeMory work

Since this is the first lesson of a new year, some of your students may not be familiar with the student book. Take a moment to show your class where they can find each week’s memory verse. (The upper right corner of each “My Bible Words” page and the back cover of My

Bible Book.) Then ask everyone to turn to page 3 of My Bible Book.

Our memory verse for this week is the very first verse of the Bible. Have the children find Genesis 1:1 in their Bibles and say it aloud together.

In the Bible story we heard how God created special lights to separate the day and the night.

Where are these lights? (In the sky.)

Our memory verse uses a different word for the sky. What words in this Bible verse do you think mean “the sky”? Help students find and underline “the heavens.”

Use an echo activity to practice the verse. Divide your class in half and have them stand facing each other. The two groups alternate calling out phrases to each other in unison. This can be repeated several times at different volumes and speeds.

Group 1: In the beginningGroup 2: God createdGroup 1: the heavens and the earth.Group 2: Genesis 1:1

Optional ActivityHave students print the memory verse across the top

of a sheet of butcher paper. Then using pictures of the sun, moon, and stars from magazines, let the children create a collage poster showing God’s purpose in day and night. What other word can they add to the collage to tell about what God created?

The Bible tells us God created day and night at the very beginning of our world. Let’s create a reminder about our Bible verse.

Hold up a sample of the Kid Crafts project for Lesson 1, from page 7 in the books. Unfold the card and let the students read the verse. Then distibute the Kid

Crafts project and markers to your children Let the students color and fold thier cards before moving on to the next part of this section.

The Bible says God’ creation of day and night was good. Let’s look at some of the reasons it’s good to have both day and night.

Divide the children into groups of two. Have them look at the smaller pictures on page 5 in My Bible Book. Ask them to discuss what is happening in each picture and when it is happening. Challenge each group to come up with why it is good to have both night and day.

After a few minutes of work time, bring the groups back together into one large group. As a quick summary of their discussions, ask students to draw a line from each little picture to the big picture that shows when

that activity most often takes place.

Spend the rest the time for this step discussing why it is good to have both night and day. Ask a spokesperson for each group to tell the group answer. Write the answers on the board. Help students see that having day and night helps people do the things they need to do and get the rest they need. It’s also important because some animals, like the owl, hunt only at night. It also lets “both sides of the world” have daytime.

When discussing “typical” daytime and nighttime activities, avoid implying that adults who work night jobs are going against God’s plan. Encourage students to talk about what might be different for “night job” families (someone sleeping during the day, grocery shopping at night) and what would be the same (alternating rest and active times, sun and moon still come out).

3 Bible Application 5-10 minutes

objective: that your students will understand why it is good to have both day and night.

my Bible Book, page 5Kid crafts, page 7

Page 10: Echoes Elementary

elementary | lesson 114

Have students turn to page 6 in My Bible Book. Our memory verse says that “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God gave us day and night because He knew we needed both of them. We can use these two poems to thank God for these good gifts. But first

we have to fill in the missing words.Read through the two prayers and ask students

to independently write in missing words that would complete each prayer. These words do not have to rhyme with the beginning of the prayer. Encourage the children to use words that show what they personally thank God for in the daytime and nighttime. The students may color the daytime scene.

As time allows, begin teaching your students the first song from the DisKit in your teaching aids packet.

Closing aCTiViTyClose this week’s lesson by praying together using

the prayers students completed on page 6 in My Bible Book. You might have half your class say the printed prayer thanking God for daytime, then pause to allow time for students to silently complete the prayer using their own answers. Let the other half of the class say the prayer thanking God for nighttime, again pausing for children to silently complete the prayer. Encourage students to use their prayers on page 6 at home during the week. Challenge them to add more things to the daytime and nighttime sections for which they thank God.

Send home pages 3-6 of My Bible Book and Projects for Lesson 1 from Elementary Kid Crafts. (You might wish to keep the name tags in class for your students to use next Sunday.)

Lesson 1

What I learned about God this week: God’s plan in creation can be trusted.

Eric put his nose up to the window.

“I like the stars and the moon,” he

said.

“I like the sound of crickets, too.”

The boys lay back in their bunks.

Eric said, “I guess it’s nice to have

night.

It’s nice to have a big brother, too.”

Talk-a-Bit Talk about why God made night. Then finish this sentence: The thing I like best about night is ___________________________ .

Joey lay in bed listening to night

sounds.

Then he heard a different sound.

Eric was crying.

“What’s the matter?” Joey asked.

“It’s too dark in here,” said Eric.

“Why can’t the sun shine all the time?”

“God knew we needed to sleep,” Joey

said.

“Night is part of God’s special clock.”

Joey pulled back the curtains.

“Look at the stars and moon,” he said.

“After the sun sets, we can see them.”

Page 23: Echoes Elementary

2

God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light. God liked the light He created.

God called the light “day.” He called the darkness “night.”

God created lights to shine. He made the sun for the day. He made the moon for the night. He also made stars. He made many, many stars.

God put the lights where they could light the world.

What if it were always dark? Would that be good? No! We could not see.

What if it were always light? Would that be good? No! We need a time to rest.

God created what we need. He made day and He made night. God’s creation of day night, sun, moon, and stars was good.

God Made Day and NightBible story from Genesis 1:1-31; Psalm 111:2, 7

In the beginning, God lived. But there was nothing else. No people. No animals. No sun. No world. Nothing.

But God always was. Nobody made Him.

God wanted to make people. But in the beginning He made some things people would need.
