Storyline  Alex  is  a  single-­‐father,  struggling  to  juggle  work  life  and  look  after  his  child,  Charlie.  One  day,  Alex  is  watching  television  in  his  living  room  when  Charlie’s  baby  monitor  starts  making  weird  sounds.  There  is  a  woman  singing  a  lullaby  and  Alex  becomes  freaked  out.    I  especially  like  the  lighting  in  this  scene  from  the  television.  Alex  runs  upstairs  to  make  sure  there  isn’t  an  intruder  and  that  Charlie  is  safe.  Keogh’s  facial  expressions  here  really  gave  the  impression  that  something  awful  had  happened.    When  Alex  gets  upstairs,  Charlie  is  alone  and  safe.  Who  was  it  singing?    Alex  decides  to  hire  a  nanny,  Alice  to  help  cope  with  the  stress.  Marie  Drisch’s  accent  really  leaves  a  creepy  aroma  surrounding  her.  Alex  is  lying  on  his  bed  and  calls  his  friend  to  tell  him  about  the  baby

monitor  and  the  weird  things  that  are  going  on.  This  is  really  helpful  for  the  audience  as  for  those  who  are  confused  it  tells  them  exactly  what  is  going  on.  Alex  comes  home  from  work  and  begins  to  make  dinner.  He  heads  to  the  fridge  and  begins  to  prepare  dinner.  The  shot  from  inside  the  fridge  is  genius  and  arguably  the  best  shot  of  the  entire  film.  Alex  proceeds  to  get  out  a  knife  before  heading  back  to  the  fridge  to  get  something  else.  When  Alex  turns  back  around,  the  knife  is  gone.  Confused  Alex  continues  to  prepare  the  dinner.      It  is  late  at  night  and  Alex  is  watching  television  and  eating  dinner  when  the  television  turns  itself  off.  Alice  is  then  heard  on  the  baby  monitor  speaking  weirdly  to  Charlie.  Alex  flashes  back  to  the  knife  going  missing  and  starts  to  slowly  creep  upstairs.  This  flashback  is  extremely  good  and  obvious  as  to  what  is  happening.  We  are  left  on  a  cliffhanger  and  irritatingly  the  audience  never  finds  out  what  happens  to  little  baby  Charlie.  

 

The  Review  The  amount  of  mystery,  suspense,  and  tension  that  surrounds  Alex  and  Charlie’s  seemingly  normal  life  is  hard-­‐hitting.  It  highlights  the  issues  of  meeting  people  online  and  single-­‐parenthood.  If  you  liked  “Inception”  then  “Echoes”  is  worth  a  watch.

 Using  such  a  common  household  object  as  a  way  to  hear  Alice’s  lullabies  will  make  parents  everywhere  question  the  so-­‐called  interference  they  are  hearing.
