The historical context for rail development in the Middle East
The development of railway networks in the Middle East is not a new phenomenon. The first line in the region opened in 1852 linking Cairo with
Alexandria. The 1,300-km Hejaz railway between Damascus and Medina, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia, opened in 1908
Alexandria’s Misr Station, completed in 1852

The years of neglect
© 2014 MEED Projects
But the sector was neglected in the second half of the 20th
century, especially in the Gulf. Oil wealth meant that the local
population took to the road encouraged by new road networks
and cheap fuel. Rail development was put on the backburner.
To this day, there are no operational rail networks of any kind
(metro, overland rail, trams etc.) in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar,
Oman and until recently the UAE.
At the same time existing networks in some of the pioneers of
rail travel in the region suffered from underinvestment. The
Iraqi, Egyptian, Maghreb networks all require substantial
investment to modernise them.
However, over the last ten years there has been a sea change
in approaches toward rail investment.
