A. SAND SEPARATIONMANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
The presence of solids and sands in the wellhead production lines are likely to develop erosion and blockage issues in all the downstream equipment. Working together with its technology partner, EDES offers single and multiphase wellhead desanders suit-able for solids and sands removal. Our proven wellhead desander systems give optimum per-formance under various operating conditions.
Our Wellhead Desander can be operated con-tinuously, as solids are flushed from the accumu-lator without interruption to the process. More-over, our Wellhead Desander operates without the need for flow or pressure controls, there-fore minimizing operational issues and protect-ing downstream systems from solids problems. SAND CLEANING SYSTEMS
Sand Cleaning System
License Technology : Enhydra Ltd. (UK)
EDES can design and supply sand cleaning sys-tems to clean sands which typically originate from upstream desanding hydrocyclones and from production separators.
Our sand-cleaning solutions, utilising the high effi-ciency DS desanding hydrocyclones, are available for various flow capacities. This is designed to clean the sands, typically removing the hydrocarbons to less than 1% to facilitate overboard disposal. EDES can also design and supply sand bagging systems for transportation to suitable onshore disposal site.

SAND FLUIDISING SYSTEMS
SAND FLUIDISING SYSTEMS
License Technology : Enhydra Ltd. (UK)
EDES, together with its technology partner, also
offers sand fluidisation systems and sand flushing
systems applicable for new build, retrofit and up-
grade projects.
The accumulation of solids in production sepa-
rators and other vessels under certain operation
conditions can cause reduced separation perfor-
mance, increased vessel corrosion and increased
maintenance costs.
By modelling the pressure drops and understand-
ing of slurry behaviour, EDES can calculate opti-
mum number and flow rates for each of our sol-
ids fluidising heads, thus enable us to design the
complete systems to flush accumulated solids from
production separators and vessels either for direct
disposal or for further treatment in a Sand Wash-
ing System.

CRUDE OIL DEHYDRATION
20
-Working together with our technology partner, EDES uses the "basic engineering" approach for the design and specification of electrostatic dehydrators and desalters. We can design and supply crude oil dehydrators and desalters of the conventional AC-type, as well as the more advance AC-DC type, to suit the requirements of our customers. We believe that if the problem is well-defined and the surrounding circumstances recognized, then the proper equipment, using the correct safety factor, can be specified, designed and supplied.

One-Stage Operation

Figure 1: One-Stage Operation: Crude Oil Dehydration
21

Dehydration (Figure 1) – Single-stage units are usually sufficient for dehydrating produced crudes. BS&W carryovers can range from trace to 1.0 vol.%, depending on crude type, operating temperature, inlet water content and other factors. "Other factors" include production methods, chemical treatments, handling procedures, etc.
Desalting – Adding water which is less saline than the water contained in the feedstock crude converts a dehydrator into a desalter. Typical single-stage removals are illustrated in Figure 2.

Two-Stage Operation
License Technology : Howe-Baker Engineers UK
22
Dehydration/Desalter (Figure 3) – The first stage (i.e., dehydration) reduces BS&W content so that water added for desalting (i.e., the second-stage) can dilute the brine content more effectively.
Desalter/Desalter (Figure 3) – Two-stage desalting is required when 90-95% salt removal is not good enough. Process water is injected into the second stage and recycled back to the first stage. 98-99% salt removals can be expected for most crudes.

Figure 4: Three-Stage Operation: Crude Oil Dehydration - Desalting - Desalting
Crude oil Dehydration/Desalting/Desalting (Figure 4) – This design is appropriate when the feedstock BS&W are high (say 5-40 vol.%) and the product salt content must be low (2 ptb). The dehydrator reduces the BS&W content.
Desalter/Desalter/Desalter (Figure 4) - This design is rare but has been specified for applications on very heavy crudes and residuals. When these heavy oils are used as feedstock for cat crackers and turbine generators, very low sodium contents are required.
DC Electrostatic Coalescer:
• Only for essentially non-conductive, clean, distillate and light hydrocarbon service.• Typical power rating 10 kVA, (5 kVA and 15 kVA are also available).• Typical liquid carryover is about 5 – 10 ppm.• Used to desalt distillate fuels used in gas turbines.

E. TEG Glycol Gas Dehydration
License Technology : Howe-Baker Engineers UK
25
In this process, a liquid desiccant dehydrator serves to absorb water vapour from the gas stream. Glycol, when in contact with a stream of natural gas that contains water, will serve to ‘steal’ the water out of the gas stream. Essentially, glycol dehydration involves using a glycol solution, usually either Diethylene Glycol (DEG) or Triethylene Glycol (TEG), which is brought into contact with the wet gas stream in a contactor tower.
TEG is used as a standard due to its relative properties for vaporisation, thermal stability and viscosity. TTEG has a higher boiling point but is more viscous, while DEG has a lower boiling point but reduced viscosity (may be used if the gas temperature is less than 10oC).
Pipeline drips installed near wellheads and at strategic locations along gathering and trunk lines will eliminate most of the free water lifted from the wells in the gas stream. Multi-stage separators can also be deployed to insure the reduction of free water that may be present.
.slevel yrtsudni elbatpecca ot decuder eb tsum metsys eht hguorht devom ruopav retaWTypically, the allowable water content in gas transmission lines ranges from 4 to 7 lb. per MMSCF gas. The wet inlet gas temperature and supply pressures are the most important factors in the accurate design of a glycol gas dehydration system. Figure 1 shows a simpli-fied process flow for a TEG Gas Dehydration Unit.

Figure 1: Simplified process flow for an Amine Gas Sweetening System
Hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, mercaptans and other contaminants are often found in natural gas streams. Hydrogen sulphide, H2S is a highly toxic gas that is corrosive to carbon steels. Carbon dioxide, CO2 is also corrosive in the presence of water to equipment and reduces the BTU value of the gas. Our field proven gas sweetening system removes these contaminants so that the gas can be made suitable for transportation and further use. Together with our technology partner, EDES can design and manufacture a variety of gas sweetening systems, including amine systems. We can offer a number of amine solvents that remove the contaminants by chemical reaction. Custom and standard designs are available to meet any gas sweetening challenge in the oil and gas industry.
