Passing the TorchThe 2014-2015 academic year was filledwith celebration, transitions, and hope foran exciting new future for the College ofEducation. In addition to celebrating theCOE’s 50th anniversary of providing qualityteacher education programs at GVSU, theCOE has also seen a change in leadership.

Dean Elaine Collins transitioned fromthe COE on July 1, 2015, to becomepresident of Johnson State College inVermont. I will serve as interim deanduring this transition. I look forward toworking with our educational communityin achieving even greater goals during the2015-2016 academic year. The searchfor a new dean has begun and, if all goesas planned, we hope to have the positionfilled in early 2016.

Under Dr. Collins’ 12 years of leadership,the COE was empowered to innovate,change, and grow into a prominenteducation program. We celebrate justsome of Dr. Collins’ contributions to theCOE on pages 17-18 of this report.

As the torch is passed, the COE willcontinue to grow and expand ourprograms, improve our quality throughinnovative assessment systems, andconnect with our communities throughstrong partnerships. We look forward tothe changes that the future will bring.

In the COE, “liberal education” is defined as both the studyof classic knowledge and the freedom for students to open

their minds to new theories.Throughout our programs, we focus on critical thinking and democratic principles. We challengestudents and faculty to continually reassess our world and explore possibilities. Encouraged by

liberal education, individuals explore many different subject areas and fields, providingthem with a keen awareness of others and a passion for development.

As we prepare each teacher in our programs, the COE fosters educators who have the greatestpotential for empowering their own students, regardless of culture, language, ability, ethnicity, genderor orientation. Liberal education develops students who have a positive influence on the world around

them — ultimately carrying the skills they gain out into their own classrooms and communities.

COE Alumni Association Outstanding Alumni Educator Award Lisa Minnella, M.Ed., and Michael Pascoe, Ed.S.

Lisa Minnella has been an educator for 27 years. After receiving herbachelor’s degree in Psychology and Special Education from GVSU, she was hired by Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS). Minnella taughtin a self-contained learning disabilities (LD) classroom for five years whileearning her master’s degree in Learning Disabilities in 1992. She piloted a Least Restrictive program at Burton Elementary with LD students,served as a member of her School Improvement Team and the Parent-Teacher Organization, and coached cross-country and basketball. In 2011, Minnella became principal at Mulick Park Elementary (GRPS),where she is committed to increasing student achievement and buildingrelationships with students, families, and staff.

Michael Pascoe has worked in education for the last 15 years. With a bachelor’s degree in both Kinesiology and Education from Lakehead University, he has taught and coached varsity in California, Detroit, and Grand Rapids. Pascoe obtained his master’s degree in Educational Administration from Michigan State University in 2008, and an EducationalSpecialist degree from GVSU in 2010. He is now in his fourth year as headprincipal of City High Middle School (GRPS), and he performs schoolevaluations across the country through the International BaccalaureateEducation Network. Pascoe aspires to become an executive director orassistant superintendent upon completion of his Ph.D. program in 2015.

Teresa McDougall holds a bachelor’s degree in ELA, Science, andSocial Studies, and a master’s degree in Reading Instruction fromMichigan State University. She also earned a master’s degree in Education: Specialist in Media and Technology from GVSU. McDougallserves as Grandville‘s K-12 instructional coach and parent educator,and as an instructional coach for Kent Intermediate School District. She provides educators with tools to develop innovative student-centered instruction and use data effectively. With six other COE alums,McDougall established GVSU’s College of Education Alumni Board 12 years ago and has served as its president. The Board allows COEalumni to share expertise and develop professionally.

The word “education” comes from the Latin root words “e”and “duco,” which together translate as “I lead forth.”

Thus, the role of educator is to lead and inspire others, providing themwith the skills and knowledge they need to excel in society.

But this responsibility extends far beyond working in our classrooms. As educators,we have the power to share knowledge within our communities. We can lead,

shape, and improve our world. Each day, the COE embraces this socialresponsibility, whether it is through partnerships with local organizations, servingand studying abroad, promoting inclusion, or creating field-based experiences

that improve the environment and lives of others. We are committed toour communities and creating positive changes for a better future.

Examples of SustainabilityEconomicKids’ Food BasketIn a campaign organized by the Student Information and Services Center (SISC), the COE collects “loosechange” to support the Kids’ Food Basket of West Michigan. Money collected is used specifically to assist with the purchase of juice boxes. The COE’s faculty and staff also decorate brown-paper lunch bags with inspirational messages and designs, which are used to distribute sack suppers to students in the greaterGrand Rapids area. Kids’ Food Basket currently serves more than 6,000 children their evening meal each day,using over 100,000 juice boxes and 180,000 brown bags each month. PBS LearningMediaTo meet the growing demand for customizable, digital resources in the classroom, PBS LearningMedia andWGVU Public Media created a new partnership with the COE to provide student educators with the latest digital classroom tools. PBS LearningMedia delivers media-on-demand content to fuel deeper discussions and understanding of curriculum topics. In addition, the platform has a digital library with thousands of valuable resources for research and support. “Education has always been at the heart of our mission,” said PaulaKerger, PBS president and CEO, “and by training the next generation of teachers, WGVU’s partnership withGrand Valley State University will make a tremendous impact for a new generation of teachers and students.”

SocialCOMPASS/GEMS ProgramsTwo key programs within the COE serve to recruit, support, advise, and retain diverse candidates. The CreatingOpportunities, Maximizing Possibilities, Advancing Student Success (COMPASS) program recruits low-income,diverse learners currently attending GVSU, while the Growing Educators in Math and Science (GEMS) program recruits underrepresented high school students interested in the teaching profession. COMPASSbegan in 2011 using collaborative, campus-wide recruiting. Students meet monthly to receive advising andtest-taking strategies for the Professional Readiness and content area exams. COMPASS students also volunteer in local schools.

The GEMS program was created in collaboration with Baldwin Community Schools to expose, mentor, andprepare high school students who plan to become math and science educators. During the summer, GEMSstudents visit GVSU for three weeks to take college preparatory courses in math and science, with COMPASSstudents serving as mentors to the high school GEMS students. Our first cohort of GEMS students graduatedin May 2015, and one of our first GEMS graduates began attending GVSU in Fall 2015.

Sustainability in the COEIn the COE, sustainability efforts focus on four main areas: economic, social, cultural, and environmental. All four areas apply to the field of education, because teachers directly affect the lives of their students.We provide opportunities to dramatically improve communities and promote the power to foster sustainable societies.

CulturalIDI GroupIn early 2014, a group of COE faculty and staff members participated in taking the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), an assessment tool used to gauge individual and group cultural awareness. In Fall 2014, the group began to meet monthly to discuss ways to foster a culture of acceptance, understanding, and enrichment within the COE that extends into both work and teaching. The goals of the group are to increase open dialogue about inclusivity, promote civil discourse, and develop opportunities for community engagement within the COE.

ArtPrize EntryFor ArtPrize 2014, the College of Education was proud to have faculty member Sean Lancaster featured as an artist at Fountain Street Church. Lancaster’s ArtPrize entry, “Antepenultimate,” was a photograph collection spotlighting the ordinary faces of homeless people. As Lancaster described his work, “Theseportraits provide an extraordinary perspective on the seemingly ordinary humanness of individuals, whileraising awareness to the unique and precarious situation in which they live.” A professor of educationaltechnology within the COE, Lancaster has a passion for photography and a talent for capturing personalitiesthrough his portraits.

EnvironmentalGroundswellSince 2007, Groundswell has promoted place-based K-12 education through environmental service learning.To date, 1,500 students, 70 community partners, 65 teachers, and 22 schools have participated in the program’s environmental stewardship programs and high-quality professional teacher development.

Groundswell projects engage local students through their elementary, middle, and high school classes.Teachers are challenged to address environmental issues with students while accomplishing their schools’ academic objectives. Groundswell projects provide students with unique interdisciplinary learning opportunities, requiring them to use problem solving, creativity, networking, communication, and collaboration to address environmental issues in our local communities. Last year, student projects included planning and installing rain gardens to prevent erosion and non-point source pollution, removinginvasive species from critical wildlife habitats, and water quality monitoring.

Groundswell’s success has been noticed throughout the Great Lakes region. Over the past few years,Groundswell has received $1.46 million through contributions, grants, and in-kind support to continue providing services to teachers, students, and their communities.

We encounter challenges daily in the ever-changing field of education, and they give us the opportunity to test our skills and knowledge.

It is only through hard work, research, and experience that we gain expertise in our profession and learn to effectively overcome problems.

The COE faculty and staff are shining examples of the quality we strive for in education. We demonstrate our excellence by promoting inclusion, diversity, loyalty, and service. For many of us, our passion for education has become the focus of our life’s work,

and we are honored to serve as role models for our students and colleagues.

It is encouraging when we are publically recognized and rewarded for our contributions to education. But we are perhaps most motivated by the student teachers we work with.

Through them, our skills and knowledge are passed on, improving and inspiring both GVSU and schools throughout the world.

Pew Teaching Excellence Award Mary Bair, Ph.D. GVSU Faculty AwardsAssociate Professor in Special Ed., Foundations, and Tech., joined GVSU in 2005

The key to Bair’s excellence as an educator is her quiet but energetic personality as she motivates her students to craft their knowledge and skills inthe classroom. The waiting lists for Bair’s graduate research classes, which aredemanding and require “thesis ready” research knowledge, attest to her teachingexcellence. Through classroom reflections, her students develop the ability to critically evaluate trends in educational research.

Glenn A. Niemeyer Faculty AwardLinda McCrea, Ed.D.GVSU Faculty AwardsProfessor in Teacher Education, joined GVSU in 1992

The Glenn A. Niemeyer Faculty Award is GVSU’s most prestigious academichonor, given annually to two faculty members. This award recognizes faculty who strive for excellence in all aspects of their academic experience. In April2015, McCrea was presented with the Niemeyer Award. She has dedicated the past 23 years to enhancing education programs not only at GVSU, butacross the nation. McCrea served as a board examiner for the National Councilfor Accreditation of Teacher Education and as a lead reviewer for the Associationof Childhood Education International. McCrea’s dedication to her field has inspired excellence in GVSU students and programs. She is the seventh COEfaculty member to receive this award.

2015 Distinguished Early-Career Scholar AwardDonald Mitchell, Ph.D.GVSU Faculty AwardsAssistant Professor in Leadership and Learning, joined GVSU in 2012

In the three short years that he has worked at GVSU, Mitchell has excelled as both an educator and researcher. He has written more than 18 scholarly publications, presented 19 papers, and obtained three grants. Mitchell focuseshis research on African American students, Greek life, and gender studies. He is active on many campus committees, including the COMPASS Program Advisory Committee and the Freshman Academy Success Institute. He alsoserves as an editor for multiple nationally recognized journals and is chair of the board of directors for DOVE Mentors, Inc.

COE Outstanding Service Awards These awards are presented to retiring faculty and staff in recognition of their contributions to the university and theircommunities. During the 2014-2015 academic year, six faculty members announced their retirement from the COE.While they may no longer teach full-time for the COE, many of our retirees remain active members in our communityby serving as adjunct faculty, consultants, and committee members.

Russ Barneveld has worked for the Grand Rapids Public Schoolsystem for more than 42 years, and he currently supervises student teachers in the COE‘s Graduate Teaching Certificate program. With expertise in technology, Barneveld is a firm believerin making education exciting, fun, and relevant. He is an activemember of the Michigan Association of Computer Users in Learning,serving as a computer coach in the Michigan Champions. Barneveld enjoys every opportunity to work with student teachersand inspires his students to create changes in education.

Reflecting on 50 Years of TeacherPreparation Programs at GVSU

Throughout the 2014-2015 academic year,the College of Education celebrated 50years of teacher preparation programs atGVSU. Some of the public events hostedthroughout the year included:

• A Grand Forum presentation was held inSeptember 2014 for members of the GVSUcommunity age 55 and older. COE facultyof the past and present discussed reachingour 50th anniversary and the influence theCOE has had on the local community.

• Gleaves Whitney lectured in October2014 on “The Great Thresholds of Education,” discussing how education has changed throughout history.

• In February 2015, Michigan Departmentof Education Superintendent Michael P.Flanagan discussed the state of our education system in Michigan and howMichigan school districts are working to improve achievement. SuperintendentFlanagan was joined by local school administrators Nick Ceglarek, Dirk Weeldreyer, and Carolyn Evans to sharetheir visions for education in Michigan.

• A 50th anniversary “Reflections & Predictions” lecture in March 2015 examinedthe COE’s past, present, and future. Usingpresentations and performances, the COE’sfaculty, staff, students, alumni, and retireesshared their reflections on the past 50 yearsand predictions for the future of education.

• The final event in April 2015 featuredSusan Ford Bales and Dr. Hendrik Booraemdiscussing “The Education of Gerald R.Ford” and his wife, Betty Ford. SALUTE TOELAINE COLLINS

In February 2015, Dr. Elaine Collins announced that she would transition from her role as dean of the College ofEducation to take a new position as president of Johnson State College, located in Johnson, Vermont. Collinsserved as dean for the past 12 years, and her transition is bittersweet for many members of the GVSU community.

In 2003, Collins was appointed dean of GVSU’s School of Education. An experienced and knowledgeable administrator and educator with a background in music, one of Collins’ first tasks was guiding our journey to become the College of Education.

Collins’ self-described leadership style is to “lead from behind” as she encourages individuals to “seek excellencein all that we do.” No area of the COE has gone unnoticed or unchanged during her tenure, and every employeehas contributed to refining and raising our standards and quality.

In addition to her leadership at the College of Education, Collinshas been influential throughout the university, the community, andthe state. At the university, she chaired the Professional TeacherEducation Advisory Council (PTEAC), and nourished collaborationbetween the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Education. She also served on the Advisory Board for Sustainability, responsible for GVSU’s recognition as one of the nation’s top 25 green campuses.

Collins recently served as a member of the Gerald R. Ford MuseumLearning Initiative Steering Committee and the Education ImpactTeam for Seeds of Promise. In past years, she served as presidentand member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Association ofColleges of Teacher Education, and she has represented Michigan’spublic university education deans on the State Board of Education’sProfessional Standards Commission. Collins has also chaired Leadership West Michigan’s Urban Center Revitalization/Educationand Arts/Education initiatives.

Outside of academics, Collins served as vice chair of the West Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross and has been a member of the Michigan State Department Task Force on Creativity, Arts and Cultural Education.

Dr. Collins earned her bachelor’s degree with honors in music from the University of California at Los Angeles(UCLA), a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from The University of California at Davis, and a Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership from The Ohio State University.

• Led GVSU’s School of Education to become the College of Education (COE) in 2004.

• Reorganized the COE into the current departments.

• Oversaw the COE’s national accreditation process in 2006 and 2012,with all six National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education(NCATE) standards met at both the initial and advanced program levels.

• Oversaw education preparation for 18 graduate programs and 25 undergraduate content areas.

• Achieved accreditation for the Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degreesin 2006 through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).

• Created the COMPASS (Creating Opportunities, Maximizing Possibilities,Advancing Student Success) and GEMS (Growing Educators in Math andScience) programs to recruit low-income and diverse student populations.

• Served on the development team for the Grand Rapids Public Museum School, in coordination with Grand Rapids Public Schools; DowntownGrand Rapids, Inc.; Ferris State University/Kendall College; and the Grand Rapids Public Museum. COE faculty member Christopher Hankswas appointed to serve as principal for the new school.

• Promoted engaging learning and work spaces within the COE, including the incorporation of artwork from GVSU’s Galleries and Collections throughout the COE’s offices.

• Formed the Professional Teacher Education Advisory Council (PTEAC) to provide the GVSU community with a forum for the exchange of information, suggestions, and recommendations about professional education practices and programs.

• Served as president of MACTE (Michigan Association of Colleges forTeacher Education) and as chair of the Michigan Dean’s Council.

• Served as a board member and partner of the West Michigan Literacy Center, promoting literacy throughout the West Michigan community.

practices, we strive together to encourage learning and connection between people.

When not in our classrooms and offices, our faculty and staff present at conferences around the world, publish articles related to our areas of expertise, and improve communities through

volunteer organizations and committee memberships. As our faculty and staff members contribute their gifts to the efficiency of the COE’s departments, they ensure that our
