Vision & Mission: ‘QUALITY EDUCATION & Appropriate Skills TO ALL, INDEPENDENT OF GEOGRAPHY’
At IIT Guwahati, Hon’ble PM Dr. Manmohan Singh said “We are one of the youngest nations and, according to
observers, India has the potential to create over 500 million trained people by 2022 which is over a fourth of the global workforce. The big opportunity for India would come from an education revolution that we must undertake as our most important national endeavor.”
The World of Education is undergoing a rapid and quiet transformation: How do we in India take advantage of this and synthesize a new framework of providing Global Skilled Workforce?

Learning~ Skills Development
Training and learning is no longer something you do between school and work.
Now employees will train, retrain and continue to develop new and higher levels of skills throughout their lives.
This ongoing learning is critical to the individual employee, the employer and the economy.

vocational education and training trends
Developing effective curricula, training institutions need to establish working relations with employers and the local community in order to respond to local employment opportunities and training needs.
The curricula have to be revised from time to time in order to maintain their objectives as job opportunities and training needs change.
This is possible when a monitoring and inspection system of the graduates (Tracer study) is put in place.

Curricula
Training institutions may develop their own curricula according to their local job market demand and incorporate the rigid national curricula for the purpose of certification.
Institutional curricula need to be flexible to improve on access and equity.
Courses of varying length (modules) to minimize training duration, evening classes may be developed to lower cost of training.
In-service training for Instructors may also be developed according to the needs.

Successful Skills Development
Entrepreneurship education & Financing requires (i) Professional Instructors (ii) Training materials, equipment and maintenance. There is always inadequate financing in public and private
training institutions to afford the above requirements.
Professional instructors: - Professional instructors with good technical and
pedagogical skills are central to quality training. These instructors are not readily available.
because there are no instructor-training institutions. If found the cost of training is very expensive.

Successful Skills Development
Although skills imparted by modern sector institutions can be broadly useful in rural and informal sector, self-employment, the curricula are weak in preparing individuals for the market.
Industrial attachment for trainees organized by training institutions with industries plays an important role in initiating the trainees to a working (employment) environment and broadening their skills.
Successful entry into self-employment and the establishment of small businesses require much more than vocational skills
Access to capital and markets and business management competence are also needed

Skills Development Initiative –Localized Approach
Onsite Skills Training & Testing Benchmarked international standards of performance Accessibility, Quality and Cost; Independent Assessment &
Verification and the Joint Certification with Awarding Bodies and Partners.
Through the initiative it has tried to integrate the stakeholders from the grassroots level worker to the policy makers into a delivery model, which is self-sustainable & encourages developing entrepreneurs.
It does not restrict itself to the high-end skills, but talks of developing a four-collared workforce – where importance is given to the rust collar worker as well.
With an elaborate Directory of Skills (with skills from services & manufacturing sectors), the Skills Development Initiative has components of training the workers, Training the Trainers, Smart Card Certification, Standardization & Skills Competitions.
