• Both men and women wore eye make up, rouge and perfumed oils that softened the skin and prevented burning in the sun and damage from the sandy winds.
• Kohl is a mixture of soot and galena. Kohl was stored in richly decorated containers called kohl pots.
• The malachite stone was crushed and then mixed as the green eye make up.
• Red ochre is a pigment made from clay & used as blush
• Henna is from the leaves of the henna shrub & was used as red hair dye & fingernail coloring

HIEROGLYPHICS
• “Words of the gods”
• This form of writing began c. 3000 BCE
• Egyptian hieroglyphs were a combination of
sound-signs, pictograms, and ideograms.
• There are over 700 symbols
• Only consonants - no vowels
• No punctuation

• Hieroglyphs are written in rows or columns and can be read from left to right or from right to left.
• You can tell which direction to read because the human or animal figures always face towards the beginning of the line.
CARTOUCHE / SHENU
• The oval boarder for the
names of gods & royalty is
called a cartouche or a shenu
• “Cartouche” named for the
similarity of French bullet
cartridges
• “Shenu” named for the circular
shen symbol of the sun &
eternity
• Heh is the god of eternity
& holds the shen in both
talons.
• Horus & other vulture
gods also hold the shen.
• The sun symbol also
worked as protection for
the named person inside
it.
