Brunelleschi’s Dome• 1418, Brunelleschi enters

competition to design dome• Dome was constructed from

1420-1436• The Lantern was completed in

1471 after Brunelleschi dies• 2 domes: one made of marble

and sandstone, one made of brick-and-mortar
