Environmental Health
The collective interactions of humans with the environment and the short-term and long-term health consequences of those interactions

"Man did not weave the web of life - he is merely a strand in it.
Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself."
Chief Seattle (1854 treaty oration)

Clean Water
Water Contamination and Treatment.FluoridationWater-treatment plants
Water shortagesOnly 35% of the world’s population has an adequate water supply
10
Waste Disposal
Sewage•Septic system•Heavy metal•Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
Solid waste•Garbage•Sanitary landfill
11
Waste DisposalWhat You Can Do to Reduce Garbage
Products with least amount of packagingProducts made of recycled paper or recyclable productsAvoid using foam or paper cupsStore food in glass jars and reusable plastic containersRecycle newspapers, glass, cans, paper, and any other recyclablesStart a compost pileStop junk mail
12
Population Growth
World’s population currently estimated at 6.1 billion
Increasing by 78 million per yearTo exceed 9 billion by 2050
How Many People Can the World Hold?FoodAvailable land and waterEnergyMinimum acceptable standard of living

World Population
Factors That Contribute to Population Growth
High fertility ratesLack of family planning resources Lower death rates

19
Since recordkeeping began in 1880, temperatures have steadily
increased
Carbon Dioxide levels in the atmosphere have also increased
dramatically since 1960

Potential Effects of The Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming
Climate Changes:
– Increases in Temperature
– Decrease in Precipitations
– Rise in Sea Level
22
These Climatic Changes Impact:
HealthAgriculture ForestWater ResourcesCoastal AreasSpecies and Natural AreasWeather Patterns
23
Radiation Forms:Ultra-violet RaysMicrowavesX-Rays
Sources: Sun
Uranium Nuclear weapons/ energy Radon

Noise Pollution
Decibel: Measure of intensity of a sound wave
Avoiding Noise Pollution:Ear Protectors around machineryHeadset at 4 (out of 10)Avoid repeated exposure to sounds over 80 decibels
26
Avoid exposure to painfully loud sounds 80 + decibels

A family of four creates an estimated 15 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, (based on a calculation of its daily household energy consumption, the running of two cars and a family holiday in Florida).
To offset the greenhouse gases created, 26 trees need to be planted

"going carbon neutral",
is intended to reduce global warming encourages film-makers to plant trees to "neutralize" the greenhouse gases created in the production of their art.
31
The Rolling Stones paid for a forest on the Isle of Skye to offset the carbon dioxide emitted during their nine-day British tour. It was estimated that to balance the environmental effect of the tour the rock band had to plant 2,800 trees. About 90 per cent of the emissions were created by the fans travelling to see the band, with one tree planted for every 57 fans.

"I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power!
I hope we don't have to wait till oil and coal run out before we tackle that."
- Thomas Edison
