Framework for Animal Traceability
Identification & tracing of animals
Registration (voluntary or mandatory) of livestock for ensuring safe and hygienic animal holding conditions
Prohibition on sale of unhealthy animals
Safety of animal from unhealthy human contact
Disease free Animals
Elements of Traceability To be able to creditably record Place of Birth and Parentage Quality and type of food consumed Method of Husbandry Record use of medication Method of transportation to Slaughter Method and quality of Slaughter facilities Method and practices used to process the carcass Method of storage of finished product and transportation to
consumer
Common Global Practices and
Standards of Traceability OIE and Codex have
mandate to set standards for animal ID and traceability(May 2007 onwards), e.g. GST GS1
Currently provides a background and is not widely recognized, since most developed, since most developed countries are already ahead
A Unique Number could Record Place of Birth
Geographical rearing area or movement incidences
Methods and timing of transport
Lair age & Place of Slaughter
Movement of carcass components
Conditions & duration in cold storage
Method of transportation to Final destination
A dedicated team will need to be created to handle the collection of animal data
Benefits of Traceability Animal identification and registration through tagging
Traceability at farm cattle market, slaughter house, transportation and retail
Data recording
Title and ownership
Theft control
Regularization of animal movement
Compliance for export requirements
The 4 Stages of Traceability
1° Live cattle identification and tracing.
2° Information’s gathering in the slaughterhouse.
The 4 Stages of Traceability
The owner
the sanitel identification
The origin,date of birth
The classification
The age in months
Date and hour
are indicated on the label.
The 4 Stages of Traceability
° 3 The transmission of the data through the processing chain.
The 4 Stages of Traceability
1° On the final wrapping, the batch number give us the link with the working document (AP10343931).
2° from this working document it is easy to trace back to the deboning batch number and so on to the sanitel numbers.

Proper Steps to Animal Tagging
Properly secure the animal to apply tag
Movement of the animal’s head could create an undesirable situation to
appropriately apply the ear tag. This could cause injury to the person or
livestock, or improper tagging of the animal
Cattle: Chute with a head gate, halter and/or nose lead.
Sheep & Goats: Proper hand grip of animal’s head to restrict movement.
Identify the tagging site on the animal’s ear.
Tags should be applied in the middle third of the ear between the upper
and lower ribs
It is important while using electronic identification (EID) tags to apply the
tag with the visual panel, male portion of the tag on the outside back of
the ear with the EID button, female portion of the tag on the inside of the
ear.
Proper hygiene and cleanliness during the tagging process is necessary
to reduce the risk of infection and clean the tagging site of animals ear
Examine the tag to verify it is correctly, comfortably, and securely
positioned. Record necessary data on the animal
Ear Tagging Precautions
Tags placed too far outside of the recommended position are
prone to snagging and may be easily torn out.
Tags placed too far inside of the recommended position may
cause pinching and/or necrosis
The applicator pin to ensure the tip is in good condition, If
the tip is bent or broken, insert replacement pin
Check alignment by closing the jaws of the applicator to the
point where the two tag halves meet; the stud should be
centered within the button hole
when using EID tags, the number printed on the visual panel
tag (male portion) should correspond and match with the 15-
digit number on the electronic tag button
