Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.The GATE Exam committee, which comprises of representatives from the administering institutes, is the sole authority for regulating the examination and declaring the results. GATE is conducted through the constitution of eight zones. The zones and the corresponding administrative institutes are: Zone-1: Indian Institute of Science Bangalore Zone-2: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay Zone-3: Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Zone-4: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati Zone-5: Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur Zone-6: Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur Zone-7: Indian Institute of Technology Madras Zone-8: Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee Many students may not be aware that there are several institutions in this country, offering specialized postgraduate programmes in various disciplines. Attractive scholarship / Assistantship for postgraduate courses in engineering / Technology / Architecture /Pharmacy at Engineering colleges / institutes in the country ,are available to those who qualify through GATE Exam. List of Colleges offering ME/MTech and accepting GATE Score.
Objectives of GATE Exam To identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Post Graduate Programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Pharmacy at the National level. To serve as benchmark for normalisation of the Undergraduate Engineering Education in the country is the main Objectives of GATE Exam.
Why should we take GATE Exam? M.Tech degree leads to specialization and furthering of interest in a certain area which may lead to Ph.D, M.Tech degree is best for those wishing to apply for Faculty/Research positions in educational Institutes/R&D centers should take GATE Exam.

GATE Examination Details The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration, which contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The question paper will consist of only multiple choice objective questions. Each question will have four choices for the answer. There will be negative marking for each wrong answer.
After GATE Examination After publication of GATE results, students must apply to individual Institutes to get their application forms. Institutes advertise M.Tech admissions in leading newspapers from 1st April till end July. However some Institutes do not advertise and therefore students have to get the forms themselves. In the application forms, you have to mention your GATE score along with other details. The concerned Institute may conduct written test and/or interview for the purpose of admission. General thumb rules: If your GATE score in Computer Science is 96 percentile or more then you can try for IITs, if between 85 - 96 percentile, then apply for top RECs, JADAVPUR, SHIBPUR, ROORKEE, etc. If less than 85, you have to look for appropriate institutes.

GATE Scholarship During the pursuit of M.Tech, you are paid a scholarship of Rs.8000.00 per month by the Government of India. This amount is enough for living expenses including purchase of books, etc. The scholarship is paid for the entire 18 months M.Tech period.
Important of GATE Exam
PSU's like BARC, NPCIL, HAL etc. give importance to GATE scores for various job positions in their
organizations. GATE seats are fixed in every institute. Pharma graduate (post-graduate in India) schools have
also got their fixed GATE seats. A student is also eligible for a monthly scholarship of Rs. 8000. The examination
also tests the takers' perseverance and patience. Encourage 3rd year students to also appear GATE along with
Final Year students. GATE score is valid for 2 years.
The syllabus as required by GATE Exam is generally over by 5th semester. You can take any number of attempt, if
bad result comes.

GATE 2012 QUESTION PAPER PATTERN AND MARKING
The examination for the papers with codes AE, AG, AR, GG, MN and TF will be carried out ONLINE using
computers where the candidates will be required to enter the answer for each question using mouse. For all other
papers, the candidates will have to mark the correct choice on an Optical Response Sheet (ORS) by darkening the
appropriate bubble against each question. In the ONLINE papers, the question paper will consist of questions of
multiple choice type and numerical answer type. For multiple choice type questions, each question will have four
choices for the answer. For numerical answer type questions, each question will have a number as the answer and
choices will not be given.
GATE 2012 would contain questions of four different types in various papers:
Multiple choice questions carrying 1 or 2 marks each.
Common data questions, where two successive questions use the same set of input data.
Linked answer questions, where the answer to the first question of the pair is required in order to answer its
successor.
Numerical answer questions, where the answer is a number, to be entered by the candidate.
Examples of such questions can be found in Question Types.
In all the papers, there will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying 15
marks in General Aptitude (GA) are compulsory.
In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, GG, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE, the
Engineering Mathematics will carry 15 % of the total marks, the General Aptitude section will carry 15 % of the
total marks and the remaining 70 % of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.
In the papers bearing the codes AR, CY, GG, MA, PH and XL, the General Aptitude section will carry 15 % of the
total marks and the remaining 85 % of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.
GATE 2012 Marking
For 1 mark multiple choice questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2 marks
multiple choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. However, for the linked answer
question pair, where each question carries 2 marks, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer to the first
question only. There is no negative marking for wrong answer to the second question of the linked answer
question pair. If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is unattempted, then the answer to
the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. There is no negative marking for numerical answer type

GATE 2012 General Aptitude (GA) Section:
In all papers, GA questions are of multiple choice type, and carry a total of 15 marks. The GA section includes 5
questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 10 marks)
GATE 2012 Question papers other than GG, XE and XL:
These papers would contain 25 multiple choice questions carrying one mark each (sub-total 25 marks) and 30
multiple choice questions carrying two marks each (sub-total 60 marks). Out of these, two pairs of questions
would be common data questions, and two pairs of questions would be linked-answer questions. In the ONLINE
papers, the question paper will consist of questions of multiple choice type and numerical answer type. For
multiple choice type questions, each question will have four choices for the answer. For numerical answer type
questions, each question will have a number as the answer and choices will not be given. GATE 2012 GG (Geology and Geophysics) Paper: Apart from the General Aptitude (GA) section, the question paper consists of two parts: Part A and Part B. Part A
is common for all candidates. Part B contains two sections: Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geo-physics).
Candidates will have to attempt questions in Part A and either Section 1 or Section 2 in Part B.
Part A consists of 25 multiple choice questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 25 marks). Each section in Part B
(Section 1 and Section 2) consists of 30 multiple choice questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 60 marks).
Out of these, two pairs of questions would be common data questions, and two pairs of questions would be
linked-answer questions.
GATE 2012 XE Paper (Engineering Sciences):
In XE paper, Engineering Mathematics section (Section A) is compulsory. This section contains 11 multiple choice
questions carrying a total of 15 marks: 7 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 7 marks), and 4 questions
carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 8 marks).
Each of the other sections of the XE paper (Sections B through G) contains 22 questions carrying a total of 35
marks: 9 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 9 marks) and 13 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total
26 marks). Out of the 2-mark questions, 2 pairs are common data questions and 1 pair is linked answer questions.
GATE 2012 XL Paper (Life Sciences):
In XL paper, Chemistry section (Section H) is compulsory. This section contains 15 multiple choice questions
carrying a total of 25 marks: 5 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 10 questions carrying 2-
marks each (sub-total 20 marks). Out of the 2-mark questions, 1 pair is common data questions, and 1 pair is
linked answer questions.
Each of the other sections of the XL paper (Sections I through M) contains 20 multiple choice questions carrying
a total of 30 marks: 10 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 10 marks) and 10 questions carrying 2-marks
each (sub-total 20 marks).
ELIGIBILITY
The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear for GATE 2012:
• Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10+2) and those who
are in the final year of such programmes.

• Master's degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or

• Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master's degree programme (Post-
B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology.
• Candidates in the fourth or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master's degree programme or Dual
Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.
• Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies
recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by Institute of Engineers (India); AMICE by Institute of Civil
Engineers (India)) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of
such professional courses are also eligible.
• Pre-final year students are not eligible to write GATE

attached either a copy of the degree certificate or a certificate from your college principal as indicated below:
Candidates should submit a copy of the degree certificate or provisional certificate if they have passed their
qualifying degree in 2011 or before.
Candidates with the following eligibility conditions should submit a certificate signed by the Principal of the
college, where the candidate is studying, clearly indicating the year of passing of the candidate in the qualifying
degree.
Students in the final year of Bachelor's degree programme in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture (4 years
after 10+2).
Students in the final year of Master's degree programmes in any branch of Science/Mathematics/
Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent.

GATE SCORE
The GATE 2009 scorecard will consist of actual marks obtained by the candidate, the GATE Score, Percentile Score and All India Rank (AIR). Scorecard will be sent only to the qualified candidates. Such requests should reach the Organizing Chairman, GATE 2009, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee 247 667 before August 31, 2009 together with a bank draft for the amount mentioned as above in favour of Chairman GATE, IIT Roorkee, payable at Roorkee. These scorecards will be labeled as Additional Scorecard -1 and Additional Scorecard - 2. The GATE score, awarded in the range of 0 to 1000 reflects the candidates academic ability and will be based on his/her performance in GATE 2009 and the performances of all candidates who appeared in GATE in the last four years 2006-2009. Candidates with the same GATE score from different GATE papers and/or years can be considered to have the same performance level. Scorecard will be sent only to the qualified candidates. No information will be sent to candidates who are not qualified. The GATE Scorecard is a valuable document. The Scorecard cannot be treated as a proof of date of birth, category and disability status. The Scorecard will indicate GATE Score and Rank of the Qualified Candidates. GATE Score The GATE Score of a candidate is in the range 0 to 1000. It reflects the performance of a candidate, irrespective of the GATE paper or year in which he/she has qualified. Candidates with same GATE Score from different GATE papers and/or years can be considered to have the same performance level. The marks obtained by the candidate is normalized on the basis of the average and standard deviation of marks of all candidates who appeared in the paper mentioned on the scorecard in GATE. Subsequently, this is scaled with respect to the global average and global standard deviation so as to facilitate performance comparison across GATE papers and over a block of years since GATE 2004.

FAQ’S
1. How do I apply ONLINE?
Go to the link "Apply Online". Register yourself by entering your name, date of birth, password and email id. You
can then fill in your ONLINE application form, proceed to make the payment of application fee using Payment
Gateway or Challan Payment options.
2. Should I attest the photograph for application form?
Do not attest the photograph for the application form.
3. Why should I choose two examination cities?
Generally, you will be allotted a centre in the examination city of your first choice. Only in cases where it becomes
difficult to accommodate you in the examination city of your first choice, your second choice will be considered.
4. You are asking only the SC/ST/PD candidates to enclose the category certificate. What about the OBC (non-
creamy layer) candidates? Do they have to enclose the category certificate too?
OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates do not have to enclose the category certificate since their application fee is
same as that of the general category candidates. However, in the application, you can indicate the category to
which you belong to. You need to produce the category certificate only to the admitting institute at the time of
admission.
5. How do I make the fee payment for GATE 2012 examination?
You can make the payment during the ONLINE application process by choosing one of the following options:
Payment Gateway: Netbanking through the payment Gateway of Bill Desk.
Challan Payment: Payment by cash at any branch of ICICI Bank, Indian Bank and State Bank of India.
6. If I choose the Payment Gateway option, how do I submit the ONLINE Application?
After completing the ONLINE application, choose Payment Gateway option and proceed. At the end of this
process, a pdf file will be generated with the following pages:

8. Do I need to post my application and attachments?

9. When and how will I know the status of my application?
The status of your application will be put up on the zonal GATE website. Click on the link "Application Status"
and follow the instructions. Generally, the status of your application will be put up within two days after the
receipt of the application in the Zonal GATE offices.
10. After completing the ONLINE application process and generating a pdf file, will I be able to login again to
change my application data?
No. After completing all the steps upto pdf application form generation in ONLINE application process, you can
only download the application form and cannot modify the data. However, you can create a new application by
registering once again if you are accessing the website on or before 17 Oct 2011.

11. I have missed to take a print of my ONLINE application at the end of my application process. How will I get
access to it?
You can login with the same Login id and password and take a printout.
GATE 2012 Admit Card FAQs
1. When will I receive my admit card?
Admit card can only be downloaded from the zonal GATE websites from 2nd January 2012. Sending Admit cards
by post has been discontinued. Bring the admit card at the test center along with at least one original (not
photocopied / scanned copy) and valid (not expired) photo identification. ONLY one of the following photo
identifications is permitted: Driving license, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, College ID, Employee identification
card, or a notarized Affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address. Photocopies of the
original identification document are not acceptable. Candidates will not be permitted to take the test if original
and valid photo identification is not presented.
GATE 2012 Examination FAQs
1. For how many GATE papers can I apply?
A candidate can apply for only ONE of the 21 papers listed in the GATE INFORMATION BROCHURE or GATE
website. The choice of the appropriate paper is the responsibility of the candidate. Some guidelines in this respect
are suggested below. The candidate is expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of his/her
qualifying degree. The candidate is, however, free to choose any paper according to his/her admission plan,
keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he/she wishes to seek admission
2. After submission of application, am I permitted to change my GATE Examination Paper and Examination City?
Requests for change of GATE Examination paper after the submission of Application Form will not be
considered. Requests for change of examination city will be accepted till December 30, 2011 with a fee of
Rs.400/- to be paid in the form of demand draft (payment details).
3. Will I be provided with any white paper for rough work and calculations during the test?
For OFFLINE Examination, the question paper itself contains some blank sheets on which you can do the rough
work. Rough work cannot be done on any other paper/sheet as no additional paper will be provided during the
test. For ONLINE Examination, a notepad provided to the candidate can be used to do the rough work.
4. Am I allowed to leave the examination hall during the test?
For OFFLINE Examination, candidate will not be allowed to leave the examination hall for any reason during the
test. Candidates are allowed to leave the hall only after the Optical Response Sheet (ORS) from all the candidates
in the examination hall have been collected and accounted for.
For ONLINE Examination, candidates will not be allowed to leave the examination lab for any reason during the
test. Candidates are allowed to leave the lab only after the closure of the test at the scheduled end of examination
in a session.
5. What items are not permitted to be brought with me inside the examination venue?
Electronic diary, mobile phone, and any such electronic gadgets, blank papers, clip boards and log-tables will not
be allowed in the examination venue. You should, however, bring HB black pencils (to darken the bubbles in the
answer sheet), a soft eraser (in case you wish to change an answer) and a black point pen for filling up the
candidate's data in the designated boxes. Also, you can bring a scientific calculator without data connectivity. If

you bring any item that is not permissible inside the examination venue, you will have to keep it at the test center
at your own risk.
6. Will there be any arrangement at the test center for the safe keeping of my personal items such as my mobile
phone?
No such arrangements will be possible at the test center.
