June is my month to have a sighof relief. Representing our lodge at theOntario State Convention in Maypresenting our Per Capita Check toGrand Lodge was an honor worthmentioning. June 14 is the Elk’sth

Flag Day, a National Holidayoriginated by the Elks and awonderful ceremony worth attending. The month ends with a Lompoctraditional community event, the

Queen Coronation, Debut and the Flower Festival.Before ending this short message, I want to mention how

important it is to me to recognize all Elks for theircontributions to our Lodge. I am only a title and a servant toour members. It is you who make my year as Exalted Rulercomplete. I am fortunate to have the officers who serve thisLodge in countless hours on committees and events our Lodgerequires. I could not nor would I want to do this alone.

I am personally awarding Elk of the Month recipients,during the first Lodge meeting of each award month and givingaway a meeting recognition award on the Initiation night tointerest members in attending the lodge meeting. It is alsowith a lot of personal pride to have witnessed the manyvolunteers who sacrifice their personal time supporting thehosting of the District Ritual Competition and preparationprior to the event cleaning and freshening up the Lodge itselfThere are the Elk members who installed our new ice machinein the ballroom bar area, the Past Exalted Rulers whoorganized, planned, and raised monies for our Safety Night forour community heroes and the individuals who planned,organized and supported Student of the Year Awards Banquet.And of course, the countless, faceless members and

nonmembers who continue to serve and support the many moreevents I have failed to have mentioned here. I am continuallyhumbled and proud to be your Exalted Ruler because of yourpersonal time and sacrifices for the benefit of our Lodge, themembers, and Elkdom. Thank you!Rocky Miclat, Exalted Ruler

My Elk of the Month for June is Jade Kirkland. Startingher campaign as the 2009 Flower Festival Queen CandidateChairperson back in January and finishing this month, Jadewith the assistance of a few other Elk members, courageouslyselected our current candidate, Andi Goodman. Jadeorganized an ambitious program to qualify Andi as our Queencandidate and a generous contribution to our lodge. Jade hasonly been an Elk member for less than a year. A streetbarbeque, dessert sales, root beer float sales, a 1st AnnualQueen Country Ball, spaghetti feed and golf tournament arejust a few events, Jade has spent countless hours successfullyorganizing, planning, and enlisting many volunteers includingthe other queen candidates from our community. Jade is alsoresponsible with her mom, Carol, in nurturing, educating andmentoring our candidate, Andi, in this formative time as apotential Queen Representative and a young adult. Her timehelping in the development and preparation of our youths inbecoming leaders of tomorrow through this Elk youth programis extremely important and an integral part of encouragingthem for future achievement proving once again how, ElksCare - Elks Share. I can only hope Jade will continue to serveLompoc Elks with her strong outlook and enthusiasm. Thankyou, Jade, the influence of your good deeds will continue

We had a busy month ofMay, with the District Ritual,Mother’s Day and the StateConvention. We survived andall the accolades go thevolunteers at each event. Junebrings on Flag Day, State V/Pvisit, Father’s Day and theLompoc Flower Festival. So itis going to be another busymonth. All of these eventsrequire Lodge support. So be

sure to volunteer your services at any of the events thatyou can.

With these events, you might think the Lodge is ingood shape financially. Wrong! To accomplish all ofthese events it takes a lot of volunteer help. The Lodgecannot maintain all of the activities without the support ofthe members. The Lodge itself depends on your dues formost of its revenue. The Club depends on meals, cateredparties, etc. for it’s revenue. If you attended theLodge/Club budget approval, you know there is notenough money for everything. It is a tight budget. Theonly way this Lodge is going to stay open is with Lodgemembers participation in Lodge events and volunteer tohelp in the Lodge. Otherwise you are going to see manyactivities discontinued. Members delinquent dues are agrave concern, the Lapsation list is approximately 125members, this is lost revenue to the Lodge.

Remember if your dues are not paid youcan not enter the Lodge, nor can you be signedin as a guest.

The Flower Festival is fast approaching and again theLodge will depend on volunteers to man the Food boothat the Festival and to prepare the Lodge Float for theparade. Sign up sheets will be posted on the Loungebulletin board. Don’t forget to sign up and help.

Let me start off by saying I’m notsure I wished all the mothers a happyday on Mother’s Day, but HAPPYMOTHER’S DAY.. it was a great day,much food and happiness was had byall. The weather was great allweekend, and once again the Heart ofElkdom was throbbing and beatingvery strong. Of course June brings Father’s day.So let’s not forget the man who raised

you or even someone close enough for you to call father,which counts too. Anyway I wish all fathers a great day. Getout and play some golf or go to the park ,or just sit home andwatch a ball game, you deserve it. As far as entertainment goes, The Brian Faith Band was atthe lodge on May 22, for cook your own. They have alwaysbeen a lodge favorite, and I am writing this letter before theyperform, but I am sure they will have done well. I will bebooking another band again in June, to be announced shortly. I have also been approached about bringing back Karaoke. Iwill only do this if I get enough Interest, because the last fewtimes it hasn’t lasted long, and not worth the hassle. Any Newideas for Lodge activities or entertainment are alwayswelcome. You can drop the Lodge a note and have themforward it to me. Put this date on your calendar— June 18 — as we areth

going to have a Mexican Dinner at the Lodge. The menu willbe Tacos, beans, rice and salad for seven dollars. Dinner willbe served from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

This will help to start the fund for next year’sdictionaries. We have to order them by mid-June so that theycan be distributed to each third-grader by the first week inOctober.

The Ladies Auxiliary will also have a dessert bar thatnight.

I would like to thank everyone who made a donation tothe dictionary fund in memory of Marian Hurd. Thanks toJohn and his family for making it happen. With all thedonations we will be able to make our goal for this year.Thanks for your support.Jerry Hogan, Chairman

Well, Summer is here ready or not. I hope we have niceweather for the Flower Festival as we did for the Spring ArtsFestival.

This is a hard time for me with the Vets Push, because alot of you go on vacation. So if you can spare 2 hours on the3 Friday of the month, come to the Lodge from 11:30 AM tord

1:30 PM and help me push the Vets over for their monthlyFish & Chips Luncheon. It will make your day. Remember itis on June 19 .th

I will be having my annual raffle soon, so look for that. I have some very nice prizes this year.

Hello again fellow members, On April 27, 2009 the following freshman were chosen aswinners in the student of the month contest in recognition forthe months March and April 2009. Our yearly banquet was held on the 4th of May, and was agreat success, with $1300 given away to our scholars.Congratulations to Zachary Pecyna of Cabrillo High Schooland Katilin Munoz of Lompoc High School, our Students ofthe Year. Mia made her debut into the world in

Redding, California two months before her

mom, Christina’s due date. She was a

welcome addition to the family, which

includes her dad, Stanley and her big sister,

Hailey, who was five years old at the time.

Mia was also welcomed by her loving

grandparents, Warren and Nancy Stephens.

Mia weighed four pounds, 15 ounces

at birth. Complications were initially few.

She required a feeding tube for a few days

until she was able to coordinate her sucking

and swallowing. She stayed in the

Newborn Intensive Care Unit for one week and was then discharged

to go home.

Initially, all appeared well. After several months it was obvious

that there was a problem with Mia’s left arm and leg. Her left hand

remained tightly fisted. When she kicked, her left leg remained stiff.

She was able to use her right hand well, but was unable to pick up

toys with her left hand and when she began feeding herself, it was

with her right hand only.

Despite these differences, Mia was very active. She

encountered challenges with some motor skills and skipped some of

the vital components, such as crawling on her hands and knees.

When she began walking, she was up on her toes. Because of

tightness in her calf muscle, Mia had problems dragging her toes and

tripping frequently.

Mia’s doctor informed her parents that most likely, Mia

suffered a stroke before she was born. The doctored ordered physical

and occupational therapy funded by a state agency. This helped Mia

until services were abruptly discontinued when she turned three years

of age. It was vital that therapy be continued. Her family was at a

loss until Mia was referred to the California-Hawaii Elks Major

Project for help.

Grandpa, who is a member of the Redding Elks Lodge, called

Denise Wilson, Physical Therapist. He explained Mia’s problems

and was eager to resume physical therapy for Mia. Since Mia’s

parents work full time, she stays with grandpa and grandma during the

day and they coordinate Mia’s therapy and other appointments.

When Denise evaluated Mia she was surprised that Mia had not

been referred to an orthopedic doctor. Mia’s calf muscle was

extremely tight and because of this Mia continued to trip and fall.

She will soon receive serial castings, which will progressively

lengthen her heel-cord tendon. She will then be fitted for a brace.

This will prevent her from going up on her toes and tripping as much.

In the meantime, Mia continues with stretching and strengthening

exercises. The exercises are tailored for her age and abilities and her

home therapy program is adjusted as needed.

Mia is a bright and delightful preschooler. Mom describes her as a

“girly” girl who loves all that entails. She enjoys dolls, playing dress

up and make believe.

would like to say Congratulations to our QueenCandidate, Andi Goodman. Over the past fewmonths, Andi has shown herself to be dedicated tothe cause and stayed true to herself. I believe thepersonal growth she has experienced with last a lifetime. Thank you to Jade and Carol Kirkland for all their longhours’ wonderful events, and creative thinking that made thisQueen Candidate special. It has been a fun ride and Andi, youare an amazing young lady. Please remember you are alwayswelcome to help decorate the float. It will be located in theElks parking lot on Friday June 26, all day

Its back! The Chili Peppers will reunite for another TacoDinner fundraiser to benefit the Youth Activities,

Dictionary Fund. Mark your calendars: THURSDAY JUNE 18, 2009. 6-7:30 pm.

As many of you know this is a good dinner, ata great price of only $7.00 a plate, so come hungry.The Elks National Youth Week was a great success. I want toThank everyone that helped out in so many ways. This weekwas a time to recognize all the kids that haveworked hard in their high school studies andthe elementary reading programs. On Friday5/8 we hosted our annual hot dog party at theBoys and Girls Club. I appreciated the Lompoc P.A.L. forbringing down the rock wall, which the kids always enjoy, andalso the Rape Crisis center for bringing their “Child Safe”program, and of course the Elks Drug Awareness was alsothere. The kids love to color and this is a great way to get our

message out. The volunteers that showed up to helpwith this day were wonderful. I could not do theseevents without you, so THANK YOU!, You truly

are an example of Elkdom.I will be submitting the events binder for the Youth Weekcompetition. Wish me luck, and it will be on display when thejudging is over.There will be no Kid’s Knight in June because of Graduationsand Flower Festival. Lunches have been picking up and everyone seems to likeknowing what one special will be on a daily basis.

I would like to thank Betty Williams, Bonnie Braithwaite,Lil Blackwell, Liz Woodward and Rosie Vasques for cleaningthe windows in the atrium, along with Gene Schaefer and PhilHager (that cleaned the hallway cabinets) so our Lodge wouldlook great during the Ritual Contest.

The kitchen staff and I would like to thank the LadiesClub for donating money to have the kitchen drawers replaced.Sanford Russell made the new drawers, Janet Russell paintedthem and Phil Hager helped with picking up the rollers.THANK YOU!

Mother’s Day Brunch was a huge success with manyvolunteers helping to make it happen. The list is too long toname all the volunteers, so THANK YOU TO ALL THEVOLUNTEERS!

Eight rigs arrived at Lake Cachuma for the Maycampout. After setting up their rigs some membersenjoyed playing cards, while others sat and talked andtook in the beauty of the lake. We had the pleasure ofBonnie Peters camping with us again this month. Wewere sad to see her go back home to Oregon, but we keepin touch.

Dinner was prepared by Bill and Patsy Miller withhelp from the Osborns, they prepared hamburgers, potatosalad and chips, with cupcakes and apple crisp for dessert.

With Arnie busy with another weekend activity we didnot have a campfire and boy we sure missed it.

Saturday morning we had our usual Pigout breakfastafter which we enjoyed each other’s company. A fewshowers in the afternoon did not disturb the BBQ’er Billas he prepared a Santa Maria BBQ with strawberryshortcake for dessert. Larry and Joyce from WashingtonState joined us for dinner and had their introduction to thefamous BBQ.

A big thank you for all the hard work the Millers andOsborns did to make this a great campout.

Our meeting was held Sunday morning with deliciousmuffins to share.The following birthdays were celebrated, Judy Jenkins,Patsy Miller, Margaret Gibson, Richard Osborn and DotCollar. Our next campout will be June 5 – 7 at Pismo Sands. Origin of Flag Day

History reveals that the first Flag Day ceremony,written by a Wisconsin school teacher, was conducted byhim on June 4, 1885, commemorating the Flag’s originaladoption by Congress on that date in 1777.

In 1904, San Diego Lodge held the Elks first Flag Dayobservance, and in 1907 the Grand Lodge encouraged allLodges who had not done so already to follow suit. Thiswas followed in 1911 by the requirement for mandatoryobservance in all Lodges, thus making the Elks the firstorganization in the United States to officially do so.

As a consequence of our Order’s efforts and others,President Wilson in 1916 proclaimed national observanceof Flag Day, and on August 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman (himself an Elk) proclaimed June 14th as theyearly official day for nationwide observance.

The Elks also take great pride in the fact that the lateJoseph Vrtel, an Elk from Florida, was the designer of ourcurrent 50-star United States Flag.

CALIFORNIA HAWAII ELKS PRESIDENTLEON A. KARJOIA

The Honorable Leon A. Karjoia was initiated into the Longview, Washington Elks Lodge No. 1514in 1968, just three days after his 21 birthday. He later transferred his membership to the Eureka,st

California Lodge No 652 in 1985, where he served on and chaired various Lodge Committees, includingthe Board of Trustees between 1986-1990,the last two as their chairman, and served as Exalted Ruler in1991-1992.

Lee has served on numerous District and CHEA Elks Committees, including Jamboree Chairman,Government Relations, Ritual Contest, Bequests and Living Trusts Committee and was a qualified RitualJudge for 10 years.

He served the Grand Lodge as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the “Great Northwest Districtof California” in 1995-1996, as a Member of the Grand Lodge Committee on Judiciary for six yearsbetween 1996-2002, the last two as its Chairman, Grand Lodge Parliamentarian in 2000, as a Member

of the Pardon Commission in 2001-2002, Chairman of the Grand Lodge Pardon Commission in 2008, as Justice of the GrandForum from 2003-2006, and Chief Justice of the Grand Forum in 2007-2008. Lee served as the First Vice President of theCalifornia Hawaii Elks Association in 2008-2009.

Lee married his high school sweetheart, Cindy, without whom he freely admits he could never have accomplished all thathe has done in and out of Elkdom. They have been married for 40 years, and they have two sons, both Elks, and two grandchildren whom Lee is certain will become Elks.

Lee graduated from Central Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1969, the University of Montana witha Master of Arts in 1970, and Western State University with a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1975. He is presently engaged in thepractice of law in Eureka, California where he is a member of both the Local and State Bar Associations.

Lee has been involved with and donated countless hours to community service, serving as a Member of the Mayor’s BlueRibbon Committee on Law Enforcement, serving on various Local and State Election Campaigns, becoming a Life Member ofthe California Waterfowl Association and the National Rifle Association, serving our youth by donating his time as a LittleLeague Baseball Coach, a Pop Warner Football Coach, and as a sports fan rarely missing his two sons baseball, basketball,football, and soccer games, by being active in the Untied States Jaycees, becoming a Regional Director in1977, and by beingan Exchange Club Member and its President in 1986.

Lee is an avid hunter and fisherman. Most falls he can be found on the Columbia River in his jet boat, fishing for salmon,or in the rice fields of California hunting for pheasant with his family and dog.

Finally, to relax in his spare time he models wooden ships and an “N” gauge railroad.

Lance was born in Jamestown, New York on December 21, 1948. He graduated from High Schoolin 1966 and joined the U.S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, he served as a Plane Captain at NorthIsland Navel Air Station and Oceano Virginia Naval Air Station. He was promoted in 1967 and servedaboard the U.S.S. Ticonderoga as an Aircraft Support Supervisor and Master of Arms Officer. Whileon the Aircraft Carrier, he was stationed in the Tonkin Gulf during the 1968 Tet Offensive. After beingdischarged from the Navy, he attended Glendale College and the University of Redlands where heobtained a B.A. Degree in Personnel Management.

Lance was sworn in as a California Highway Patrol Officer on April 1, 1970 and attended theHighway Patrol Academy in Sacramento. His first duty station was the Glendale Area where he rodemotorcycles for four years. During his career Lance served in several positions including VehicleTheft, Environmental Crimes, and K-9 Narcotics Supervisor. In 1983 to 1985 Lance was part of the1984 Olympics FBI Intelligence Task Force. After 32 years in State Service Lance retired as an

Vehicle Theft Sergeant from San Luis Obispo, Coastal Division.Lance and Karen were childhood sweethearts and have been married for 43 years. They have four grown children, two boys

and two girls and have ten grandchildren.In retirement Lance’s hobby is growing grapes and making wine. As a home winemaker he has won several awards in the

Various County Fairs including Mid State Fair and State Fair.Lance was initiated into the Elks at Santa Maria Lodge #1538 in 1994 and transferred to Atascadero Lodge #2733 in 2004.

During the past 5 years he has served on several committees within the lodge. He worked his way through the Lodge Chairs andwas elected Exalted Ruler in 2007. Lance has recently served as the first CLMs Coordinator for the District. He is presentlySecretary for the second year.
