The main sale of Ewe Lambs saw a tidy entry both in terms of quality and number with something for everyone penned
and someone for everything when sold. Prices as expected were well up on last year as demonstrated by the top price on
the day, being the first prized pen of Mules bred by Peter Heard and family Yelland, Okehampton achieving £124, up £24
on 2019. Second prize also came from this good home and realised £114 whilst third prize ticket went to Clyde Coaker
& family of Widecombe which sold at £108. Steve Francis of South Tawton claimed £100 for his best, runners all £86 plus
and the mules averaged £105.05 up £23.80 on the year. Cheviot Mules continue to prove popular and sold to £120 for a
single black lamb from Ben Collins of Launceston who had with more conventional white tuppers at £112 twice and
runners at £104. Best of the Suffolk x Mule ewe lambs sold to £118 & £115 for the quality we’ve come to expect from
Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne followed closely by Angela Tarry Smith and nephew Tom who always travel down
from Northamptonshire with something smart which sold to £108, £104 & £100 (x2) and David & Michael Snell ventured
down from Knowstone with quality that sold readily at £106 & £105. Texel x Mules in keen demand with notable pens
selling to £117 for JB Cawsey of Torrington and £113 for Milborne Wick Farms as pure Dorset’s from Alan Bickley of
Puddington reached £116 & £115. Dorset x Mules sold to £104 & £97 for shorn sorts from David & Jenny Cox of
Rackenford and £102 & £100 for MG & SR Kingdon of Swimbridge as Romney running lambs from Rampisham Farms of
Dorchester sold well at £89.
Not so many shearlings as normal as number show signs of tightening nationwide, but demand is still there and debatably
sometimes stronger than our early sales when comparing the quality. That said some smart first draw Suffolk cross
shearling ewes led the way at £161 for first time vendor Rob Cox of Eype closely followed by Roger Alford of Sourton
selling to £155 & £152 and Winston Thorne of Umberleigh saw his make £154. NC Mule shearlings to £160 & £156 for
strong sorts that had lambed from Iris Wotton of Stoodleigh and £154 & £151 for unlambed sorts from Brandon
Richardson of Brayford. Lleyn shearlings in strong demand too with Abigail Pritchard of Dartmouth selling to £152 &
£150, Sam Diment of Wellington had Texel crosses at £148 & £141 and plenty of shearlings selling between £130 &
£144.
A large number of older ewes were a decent price for the quality forward. First of the seasons in-lamb ewes saw James
Wooldridge and family of Burrington part with scanned flock aged Dorset ewes that realised £151 & £142 and similarly
unscanned flock aged Dorset’s from the Lott family of Black Dog sold to £150 & £140. A sad day for Robin Banks of
Colyton was made a little easier by a strong trade when he dispersed the first part of his flock of mainly 1 & 2 crop NC
Mule ewes at £143 (x2), £127, £121, £120 as well as older Suffolk cross ewes at £128 & £118. Another flock reduction,
this time pedigree Blue Faced Leicester’s from Neil Cole & family of Yelverton sold away in pairs and trios to £140, £130
(x4) & £125 (x2). NC Mule 1 crop ewes from Graham McLeod of Swimbridge sold to £130 & £128 twice whilst his 2
crops sold to £126 and a smart run of FM Mules from Chris Ruby of Ashwater sold to £107 and £100 (x3). Dave Lockyer
of Burlescombe sold 6T age Beltex ewes well at £140 and Romney 4T’s to £108 for the Westcott family of Porlock who
had 6T’s at £100.
Two pedigree Texel shearling ewes came through the ring first and sold readily at 260gns for The Rolle Texel flock of
Budleigh Salterton who also had a ewe lamb at 180gns. Three rams topped at 600gns, firstly a powerful Charollais from
Steve Dennis of Bow who had others at 440gns (x2) & 430gns as well as a CharTex shearling make 460gns. Also at 600gns
were the best two Suffolk Shearlings from Mark Kingdon of Barnstaple who had others at 520gns, 460, 450 & 440gns. First
rams into the ring were powerful Texel’s from Richard Burrough and family of Membury that sold readily at 520gns, 510
(x2), 470 & 460gns whilst another good run of Texel’s, this time from Rich Kingdon of Barnstaple sold to 440gns, 410gns
& 350gns (x3). Other good Charollais from Colin Smallacombe of Bow sold to 380 & 360gns and some more good Texel’s
from Roger Geake of Lamerton sold at 400gns, 380 & 360gns. Another CharTex sold at 380gns for Steve & Rachel Lang
of Plympton whilst a smart pair of Texel x Berrichon rams sold at 350gns for Malcolm Yeo of Yarnscombe. Aged rams
keenly sought after too with Rich Berry of Kenn claiming 300gns for a 6T, William Hosegood of Zeal Monachurom had
three continental FM’s at 200gns and John Reddaway and Sons from Moretonhampstead had a FM Suffolk at 200gns.

from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg
Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at

367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS
A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes
were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey
Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for
similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as
mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of Thorndon
Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to £76,
£74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very few lots
sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty Suffolk selling
at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull sheep averaged
£62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of trade.
