EXPERIENCEURBAN CHIC
MODA HOTEL
Situated in the heart of Vancouver’s Arts and Entertainment district, the Moda Hotel is a unique 67 room boutique hotel
like none other in Downtown Vancouver. This heritage building, built in 1908, blends the best of old world style with
modern, contemporary interior design. Inside, rooms feature a sleek, tailored look with comfortable linens and furnishings
as well as complimentary Wi-Fi internet. The marriage of history with modern design, plus its fabulous location makes this
hotel a definite choice for the world traveler and corporate traveler alike.
HISTORYThe Moda Hotel, formally known as the Dufferin Hotel opened in 1908, with its main clientele comprised of Canadian
Pacific Rail workers and travelers. The Dufferin Hotel was named after Lord Dufferin (1826-1902), a former Governor
General of Canada. Dufferin was a popular figure in the court of Queen Victoria and had served as an ambassador in
Italy, Syria, and India.
In 1884, the first house built in Yaletown on Smithe Street was just steps away from the Moda Hotel. Yaletown consisted
primarily of men working in the railroad shops in the late 1800’s and then shingle and sawmills leading well into the early
1900’s. Now over 100 years later, Yaletown possesses the distinct identity of being chic, trendy, artistic and cultural.
RESTORATIONThis unique building blends the best of old world style with modern design as it possesses its original architecture,
structure and construction which have been upgraded to today’s standards and beautifully wrapped in sophisticated and
ultra modern décor.
The Moda Hotel’s identity lies in its 100 years old exposed mosaic tile floors in the lobby and bathrooms, approx. 80 years
old hardwood flooring on the stairs and in feature rooms, the original and beautifully designed lobby ceiling with dramatic
crown mouldings, and even the corner cornice of the building is original.

THE ROOMS
Curated by Indigo, Unintended Calculations brought together a group of internationally renowned artists – Augustine Kofie
(LA), Jerry Inscoe (PDX), Remi/Rough (LDN), and Scott Sueme (VAN) – in an exhibition exploring four very different approaches
to abstraction. Working in a variety of mediums, these artists have evolved the letterform building blocks of their shared graffiti
background – deconstructing and rebuilding them as compositions of colour, line, shape and movement.
MODA HOTEL MEETS INTERNATIONAL ART
THE ARTISTS:
Augustine Kofie (LA): Augustine Kofie’s signature style “Vintage Futurism” layers tightly controlled linework and complex
structures against a palette of heavy earth tones. His architecturally inspired paintings, collages and assemblages incorporate
found imagery and objects into a crafted world of process, organization and draftsmanship.
Jerry Inscoe (PDX): Heavily influenced by Deconstructivist architecture, Jerry Inscoe dissects and reassembles three-dimensional
space within an elegant framework of smooth lines, soaring arcs and sharp angles. Tone-on-tone colors and neutrals exist in
crisp definition, often set against a background of smooth wood grain.
Remi/Rough (LDN): Best described as “antiform”, Remi/Rough’s work is the product of a skilled balance of freedom and
restraint, with references to Kandinsky, Kline and the Bauhaus and Dadaist movements. The negative space in his paintings
speaks volumes, juxtaposed against gestural brushstrokes, skewed lines, strong shapes and angular configurations.
Scott Sueme (VAN): Scott Sueme’s mixed-media paintings are an exploration of spontaneity and intuition; a departure from
his critically structured and designed graffiti pieces. Favouring improvisation over strategy, he layers dense lines and bold colors
against subtle tones and textures to create a strong, energetic sense of movement.
THE ARTFORM:
In recent years abstraction has been rapidly gaining momentum within the graffiti community, with many artists around the
world pushing the composition and construction of letters to more conceptual levels. Collectively and individually, these four
artists showcase the wide range of techniques and aesthetics that exist within this genre, and are as intriguing in their
similarities as they are in their differences.

THE PROJECT:
The project consisted of two collaborative mural
installations on two separate exterior walls of the Moda
Hotel. It was the largest scale collaborative mural art
installation of its kind in a major North American
downtown city core location. The art installation took place
over the course of 4 days (March 1st-4th, 2011), and was
followed by a month long public art exhibit for these same
artists at the Becker Galleries on Granville Island. During
the art installation on the hotel, the four artists had to deal
with a multitude of challenges with respect to the weather
– as that week in Vancouver saw rain, sleet, hail, high
winds, and fortunately sun. The artists worked
tirelessly and harmoniously together to produce two
masterful pieces of public art for all of Vancouver (and
guests of the Moda Hotel, of course) to enjoy and
appreciate for years to come.
