Dear Friends, For those who toil in The Garden of the Shul, this is our busy season. I am in the midst of preparing my sermons. Doing so helps me find my High Holy Days “zone” – a kavannah – that makes the High Holy Days season meaningful. For those who do not need to write sermons, no worries! You can get into the zone too! Our tradition exploits this month, Elul, for this very purpose. Throughout this month, we blow the shofar at the conclusion of each morning service. We also read Psalm 27 each morning. It begins, “The Lord is my light; whom shall I fear?” These words reassure us that, despite the awesome (perhaps frightening?) nature of this season, we ultimately believe that God -- the One of Boundless Light – is far more compassionate than judgmental. Psalm 27 concludes, “Trust in the Lord and be strong. Take courage and hope in the Lord.” May we enter this season together, courageous and hopeful. Bi’yedidut – In friendship, Rabbi Jeffrey Weill

All are welcome!
Greetings, Over the Summer I have been studying Pirkei Avot, or Ethics of Our Fathers. I find this collection of relatively random ideas of the Sages to be extremely insightful. Generally, we read about the sages as they dispute halachic interpretations or recount stories of their travels or learning to illustrate a point about Jewish practice or a fine point of Jewish Civil Law. But rarely do we get to hear the Sages offer such “generalized” life advice unrelated to a direct halachic principle. Pirkei Avot offers a glimpse into the minds of these Rabbis and how they thought about Judaism in conjunction with more general life philosophy. A few weeks ago I came across a mishna/section that I believe sums up the purpose of the High Holidays. I wanted to share it with you in the hopes that it will guide our energy and Kavannah/concentration over Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur this year. The mishna to which I am referring is the 19th mishna in the 3rd chapter of Ethics of Our Fathers and is attributed to Rabbi Akiva. In it Rabbi Akiva states: “All is foreseen, yet freedom of choice is given. In goodness the World will be judged, and everything depends on the abundance of good deeds.” Powerful thoughts from a powerful religious thinker! Let‘s unpack these profound verses and see how they sum up the purpose of the High Holidays. ALL IS FORESEEN: This statement automatically implies belief in the “Foreseer” ie…G-d, and that G-d possesses the ability to know things that are temporally hidden from our human view. It would be difficult to celebrate the New Year properly without accepting G-d, in some form, into your life as a power from whom blessings unfold throughout the year to us. YET FREEDOM OF CHOICE IS GIVEN: This statement untethers the knowledge of any process or final result from the concept of time, while at the same time leaving ultimate autonomous control of life in the hands of each individual human being. Theologically, in order for G-d to foresee AND give us free choice we have to “imagine” living in G-d’s existence, unbounded by time. (Imagine that watching the world for G-d is akin to going to the movies and experiencing the entire 3-hour feature film in the blink of an eye.) This reminds us how difficult it would be to act nobly over the Holidays by striving to improve our lots and our lives if G-d were not watching and taking interest in our lives. But when push comes to shove our choices “run the show”. So make some positive Rosh Hashanah resolutions and recognize that you have the power to choose how your pathway unfolds. IN GOODNESS THE WOLRD WILL BE JUDGED: This posits that G-d is the “ideal” Being who must judge. And even when judging the World, G-d does so in the ideal manner…through the lens of goodness. The phrase also suggests that the world (as well as each person) will consistently fall short of an idealized state and needs to be judged, or rather coached, by the ideal that is G-d. We need this guidance in order to improve in the future and sharpen our usage of freedom of choice. The connection to Yom Kippur as the Day of Judgement here is quite obvious. But on Yom Kippur as on every other day G-d will Judge everything in goodness. EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON AN ABUNDANCE OF GOOD DEEDS: This implies that the ideal decision to make with our free choice is to do a good deed. It tells us the secret of what should motivate our flawed existence; at every decision point in your day choose to do something high-minded and positive. This is the essence of teshuva/repentance. Fill your temporal and physical space with good thoughts (ie. Tefillah), good deeds (ie.
Teshuvah), and charity to All (ie. Tzedakah). This will keep you away from sin since you will be steadily marching toward the more “idealized” or G-dly version of yourself. In brief: 1. Start by believing in G-d or at the very least in a G-dly ideal. 2. We are autonomous beings whose choices and actions determine the path of our lives. 3. G-d is the ideal, so by definition he must both judge the World and judge it with Goodness. 4. We humans are the “strivers” toward the G-dly ideal. Minimizing sin by stacking up an abundance of good
deeds is the surest way to utilize our free choice to emulate something approximating a human version of the G-dly ideal.
May we all be blessed to live this coming year in a manner that inches us closer to our own ideal selves. On behalf of Heather, Adina, Sam and the rest of the Warschawski family, I wish you all a Shana Tova Umetukah! Warm regards, Cantor Benjamin Warschawski
The Jewish New Year is our time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year.
Judaism has several different ‘new years’, several times to look back and make changes. This concept of several new years, which may seem strange at first, is not so strange at all. Think of it this way: An American new year starts in January, but there are other new beginnings; a new school year starts in September, and many businesses have fiscal years that start at various times of the year. In Judaism, Nissan is the new year for the purpose of counting the reign of kings and months on the calendar. Elul is the new year for the tithing of animals. Tu bi’Shevat (usually in February) is the new year for trees
(determining when first fruits can be eaten, etc.), and Rosh Hashanah at the beginning of Tishrei literally means “the head of the year.”
One of the most important Rosh Hashanah observances is hearing the shofar blasts in the synagogue. I never knew that a total of 100 notes are sounded each day. There are four different types of shofar notes: tekiah, a three second sustained note; shevarim, three one-second notes rising in tone, teruah, a series of short, staccato notes extending over a period of about three seconds; and tekiah gedolah (literally, "big tekiah"), the final blast in a set, which lasts ten seconds minimum. It has been suggested that the shofar's sound is a call to action, a call to repentance. For me, a call to a new beginning.
Another popular observance during this upcoming holiday is eating apples dipped in honey, a symbol of our wish for a sweet new year. This is one of my favorite Jewish practices and I highly recommend it. We dip our holiday bread in honey for the same reason.
Another popular practice of the holiday is Tashlikh ("casting off"). We join together at the water, a creek or river, and symbolically cast off our sins. Small pieces of bread representing our sins are commonly cast off into the water. We observe Tashlikh and encourage you to join us if you have not done so in the past.
From Lillian and me and our family, to you and yours, L'shanah tovah tikatev v’taihatem, may you have a sweet new year and be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

For over 30,000 Chicagoland Jews, the Yom Kippur fast is not always a voluntary activity. Please help us end the shame and pain of hunger. During Rosh Hashanah, bags will be distributed for you to fill with non-perishable kosher food items and toiletries and return to Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation on Yom Kippur. These items will be donated to The ARK for distribution to Chicagoland Jews in need.
The ARK is a non-profit, community funded social service agency with a mission to create a safety net for the needy by providing vital human services, and to build bridges between volunteers and those in need. The ARK opened in 1971 as a small, fre medical clinic staffed entirely by volunteers and serving a small elderly population on Chicago’s North Side. As the ARK’s supporters became aware of the extent of the community’s need, services were continually added. Today, The ARK provides an array of medical, legal and social services including food; medial, dental, and optometry care; prescription medication; mental health treatment and programming; job counseling; transitional housing; clothing and household goods; legal aid; rent and utility assistance; and more.

led by Rabbi Michael Balinsky Mishnah designates the collection of rabbinic traditions redacted by Rabbi Judah ha-Nasi (usually called simply “Rabbi”) at the beginning of the third century CE. The Mishnah supplements, complements, clarifies and systematizes the commandments of the Torah. Mishnah has served two roles – as the foundation underlying the Talmudic tradition and as the authoritative epitome of that tradition and has played a decisive role in the religious life of the Jewish people.
Session One: We will study the third chapter of Mishnah Rosh Hashanah and its discussion of the shofar. What do we think we are doing when we blow and hear the shofar?
Session Two: We will focus on Mishnah Yoma and the description of the High Priest on Yom Kippur. What story does the Mishnah tell that can speak to our experience of Yom Kippur?
In both sessions we will explore the interplay of halachic details and the serious spiritual life.

A Minyan Reminder… Those who attend our minyan enjoy double satisfaction: they are personally enriched and they help others by allowing them to recite mourners kaddish with a full minyan (ten adults). Attending minyan is a mitzvah!
Thank you for supporting your fellow congregants and for helping to build our community.
