Why concern for quality in online courses?

• Students can more easily take online courses from multiple IU campuses

• Students earn an IU degree (not “IU Bloomington” or “IU Kokomo”)– The IU “brand” is an asset to be protected– Students want a high quality degree

A quality framework should…• Provide guidelines for identifying high-quality online courses• Promote quality of IU online courses to external audiences• Be faculty friendly: Is aligned with existing IU policies and practices

supporting excellence in teaching and learning • Be based on research in the scholarship of teaching and learning• Promote faculty-student and student-student interaction• Provide course development resources for centers for teaching

and learning• Provide a mechanism for recognizing and rewarding faculty

achievement
