DoIneedtokeeptrackofattendance?Yes.ItisstandardpracticeatUNM-LAtotakeandkeeprecordsofattendance.Theseareespeciallyimportantifattendanceispartofaparticipationgrade.Ifastudentchallengesthatgrade,recordsofattendancewillsupportyoursyllabuscoursegradinginformation.CourseCancellationsWhathappensifnotenoughstudentsenrollformycourse?Acoursemaybecanceledforinsufficientenrollment.Normallywerequireanenrollmentofatleast10-12studentsinordertoholdacourse,butsometimesthereareexceptions,andthisminimummaychangeasthebudgetdictates.CheckwithyourDCshortlybeforeyourfirstclasstofindouttheminimumnumberforthecurrentsemester.Proceduresmayvarysomewhat,buttheylooksomethinglikethis:Ifacoursehas[10-12]ormorestudentsenrolled,itwill“make”,thatis,itwillbeoffered.OntheFridaybeforeclassesbegin,courseenrollmentsarereviewed.Ifacoursehas0,1or2studentsenrolled,anditmeetsbeforethemaincancellationmeeting(seebelow),itiscanceledatthattime.Ifithas3-9students,theinstructorisaskedtomeetwiththeclassatitsregulartime,andtobepreparedtoteachitiftheenrollmentis5ormoreandtogatherinformationaboutstudentneedsandtheircontactinformation.InstructorsarenotifiedbytheirDCregardingcancellationsandiftheirclasseshave3-9students.Courseswhosefirstmeetingisafterthemaincancellationmeetingwillbecanceledatthatmeetingiftheyhave0-2studentsenrolled(thenumbermaybelarger,andthisdoesnotapplytocoursesthatbeginafterthefirstweekofthesemester),andinstructorsandstudentswillbenotified.Ifthecoursehasfewerthan[10-12]students,theinstructorshouldmeetthefirstclass,asabove.Normally,yourDCwillletyouknowwhattodoifyourclasshasfewerthan10-12students,sincethereareexceptionsforsomecourses.Alsonotethatstudentssometimesaddcoursesafterthebeginningofthesemester,soitishardtostatehardandfastcancellationrulesthatapplytoallcourses.Iftheenrollmentduringthatfirstclassmeetingisinsufficientorborderline,theinstructorshouldfindoutiftherearestudentswhomusthavethecourseinordertograduatethatcurrentsemesterorifthereareanyotherextenuatingcircumstances,suchasthecoursebeingaprerequisitetoanotherrequiredcourse,thatwouldsupportthecontinuationofthecourse.Theinstructorshouldalsoobtainphonenumbersandemailaddressesforeachofthestudentssothattheymaybecontactedduringthenext24hoursaboutwhetherornotthecoursewillcontinue.Instructorsshouldencouragestudentstotrytorecruitotherstudentsforcourseswithinsufficientenrollment,especiallyifonlyoneortwostudentsareneeded.TheinstructorshouldreportattendanceandspecialcircumstancestotheDepartmentChairassoonaspossible(sameday)aftertheclassmeets,andtheDCwillconsultwiththeAssociateDeanandStudentServicestodeterminewhetherornotthecoursewillbeoffered.TheOfficeofInstructionwillnotifythestudentsifthecoursehasbeencanceled,anditwillrecommendthattheymeetwithanadvisortofindanalternatecourse.Themaincancellationmeetingtoreviewenrollmentsanddecidewhichcourseswillbecanceledisheldduringthefirstweekofclasses,normallyTuesdayorWednesdayafternoon.TheDeanofInstructionandadministrativestaff,AssociateDeans,DepartmentChairsandrepresentativesofStudentServicesdecideformostcourseswhetherornotthecoursewillbeheld.Forcoursesthatmeetforthefirsttimeafterthismeeting,thedecisionismadebyDCsinconsultationwiththeotherinterestedparties.InLosAlamos,cancellationsandroomchangesarepostedonthewebsite,intheStudentCenter,inStudentServices,andinBuilding6.Coursesmaybeofferedwithfewerthan[10]studentsunderspecificcircumstances,butwetrytoavoidthissituation.Theinstructorwillbepaid$25forteachingonesessionoftheclass,ifthecourseissubsequentlycanceled.
