HISTORY
IWTO was born out of an arbitration agreement between the British and French wool textile industries in 1924.
After Germany, Italy, Belgium and Czechoslovakia joined the arbitration agreement, members called for the creation of a permanent organizing body.

In 1937, the International Wool Secretariat was created. The IWS was the forerunner of todays WoolmarkCompany, and was tasked with promoting wool around the world, its members the worlds woolgrowers.
In 1797, the first Merino sheep arrived in Australia.
In 1925, the first IWTO conference was held.
In 1964, the Woolmarklogo is born.
After World War II, the IWTO came to Brussels, sharing office space with the French organization Interlaine.
In 1930, the Statutes of the International Wool Textile Organisation were approved at the International Wool Conference held in Bradford, England.
In 1998, CWTA, the China Wool Textile Association joins IWTO.
In 2001, Shanghai hosted the IWTO conference for the first time.
Benetton joins in 2016, becoming the first commercial retailer to join IWTO as a member.

IWTO is the recognized global authority for standards in the wool textile industry. Since 1930, IWTO has represented the interests of the wool textile trade at a global level. Our worldwide membership encompasses the entire wool textile pipeline, from farm to retail. By facilitating research and development, wool textile education and knowledge sharing, IWTO ensures a sustainable future for wool.
- The annual IWTO Congress a key event for the global wool textile industry- Publishing wool trade standards, arbitration rules and wool production and market statistics- Coordinating research on key topics such as sustainability, sheep welfare and biosecurity- Liaising with governments, NGOs and other stakeholders on topics of joint concern- Providing a platform for projects of interest to the global wool industry - Licensing laboratories around the world to ensure that wool is tested to the highest standards

GROWER MEETINGThe Grower Meeting is an international forum for grower
countries who are members of IWTO. They recognize the importance of communicating with each other and exchanging

ANIMAL WELFARE GROUPAnimal welfare is at the heart of every wool growers farm. Around the
world. wool farmers apply the best available animal husbandry practices to ensure the health of their flocks.
Specifications for Wool Sheep Welfare were developed by the wool growing country members of IWTO. They reflect the diversity of wool production systems as well as the national legislative animal welfare
frameworks of each wool growing country.
