SH SOLAR HEATING & COOLING
SH1. High Mass Sand Beds and Solar Thermal Storage: High mass sand beds are commonly used for inter-seasonal, long-term storage of solar thermal heat. This session will address this and other methods of banking the summer heat for winter use. Benjamin Nusz, Renewable Energy Specialist Instructor, Mid-State Technical College. Sunday 10:30 a.m. in the Red Flag Tent l
SH2. Intro to Solar Hot Water: For those who know little-to-nothing about solar water heating, this workshop is a non-technical description of system types, applications, theory, design, installations, and economics of solar water heating. Benjamin Nusz, Renewable Energy Specialist Instructor, Mid-State Technical College. Friday 3:30 p.m. in the Red Flag Tent l
SH3. Passive Solar Garage Door: Build a simple, low-tech, and attractive-looking solar collector to heat and light a garage/shop using simple tools and basic skills for pennies per watt. Passive solar retro-fit with a garage door. Ben Nelson, Blogger, Do-It-Yourselfer, NABCEP Associate, 300MPG.org. Friday 5:30 p.m. in the Blue Flag Tent l
SH4. The Solar Greenhouse: Ben will address ways to maximize solar heat gain from a greenhouse through both daily and seasonal storage techniques. He will also describe ways for active solar thermal to increase solar gain. Benjamin Nusz, Renewable Energy Specialist Instructor, Mid-State Technical College. Friday 4:30 p.m. in the Red Flag Tent lll
SH5. The Solar Greenhouse—Cold Climate Year Round Food Production (3 hour): This three-hour workshop requires a $30 ticket that can be purchased at www.TheEnergyFair.org/tickets or on-site (space limited). Grow your own food in the winter! Dan and Ben will highlight the design considerations for constructing a Deep Winter Greenhouse (DWG). DWGs utilize passive solar and sustainable building techniques to minimize fossil fuel use. Structural considerations, material selection, thermal storage and crop selection will all be addressed. Case studies of northern climate greenhouses will also be presented. Benjamin Nusz, Renewable Energy Specialist Instructor, Mid-State Technical College and Daniel Handeen, Assoc. AIA, LEED-AP, Lecturer, School of Architecture, Research Fellow, Center for Sustainable Building Research, University of Minnesota. Saturday 2:30 p.m. in the Yellow Flag Tent lll
