The Vicar Writes……February 2015 ear Friends
I like to watch a good Magician and was recalling, the other day, the magicians of my youth – David Nixon, Ali Bongo, Tommy Cooper and then, latterly, Paul Daniels. I was reading recently about another Magician called Howard Thurston.Thurston’s speciality was making elephants disappear. A magician from the early part of this century, he travelled the world with a huge show. Before he walked on stage, he would stand behind the curtains and say to himself “I love my audience, I love my audience…” And he’d repeat it to himself over and over again before he walked on. By the time he got to centre stage, he radiated love for his audience. They responded; they felt the connection. This might be a good way to prepare for any encounter. Whether the meeting is for business or pleasure, thinking in advance about the other person with love could really transform the quality of the interaction. Sometimes this will be difficult. Previous experience of the person may have led to dislike, mistrust or even hostility. St Paul, in his famous passage about love, talks of “keeping no record of wrongs” (1 Corinthians 13:5). Though what’s happened in the past may suggest a certain caution in some areas of the relationship, each meeting is a fresh start and loving someone is not the same as liking them. Jesus said “love your neighbour as yourself”; my Grandad said that Jesus was right but he added you don’t have to like them!Perhaps as we look at what lies ahead, we might think about those we are about to meet, accepting them as they are, delighting in as much of their personality as we feel we can and wanting the best for them. Such loving thoughts, in advance, might produce unexpected results and a deeper meeting. It should also lead to a better society.
Yours in Christ
Our Vision: A family, rooted in Christ, committed to transforming lives by:Gathering as God’s people – Growing more like Jesus – Going out in the power of the Spirit.

Parish NewsWe pray for those who are ill-‐ at home, in hospital or nursing homes: Phyllis Harries, Emlyn Bawden, Joan Davies, Olwen and John Isles, Joan Dobbs, Bill and Joyce Ivey, Gwyneth Bartley, Pam Ward, Graham Treharne, Pauline Morgan, Joan Perry (Morriston Hospital). We also remember, with gratitude, those who are lovingly caring for them.We were all saddened to hear of the death of Tommy Bartley on 12 January. We send our love and prayers to Gwyneth, sons Carl and Gareth and their families and to Gwyneth’s sister Brenda, who has stayed with them for several months and
has been a great support to Gwyneth and Tommy. Tommy had been a Sacristan and Server at St. Hilary’s for many years, until last year when illness prevented his regular attendance. Tommy was much loved in the Parish and will be sadly missed by us all, and also a big loss to Gwalia Choir, where he had been a member since coming to live in Swansea. Next month’s Parish News will give more about Tommy.
May Tommy Rest in Peace.✟
It is with sadness also to hear of the death of the Rev. Fr. Vaughan Lake, a true and faithful friend of this Parish, more news next month.
✟We also send our good wishes and thoughts to Val Beynon. In spite of a chest infection, went to support Chelsea v Swansea on Saturday 17 Jan -‐ not only did Swansea lose 5 nil but, as she was leaving Liberty Stadium for home, she sustained a heavy fall. Val is really experiencing severe rib cage pains and is not her usual self at all.Barbara and Eric Thomas have both been under the weather as have David Morgan & Mike Banks. Christine and John Williams have also been unwell since before Christmas. However wonderful news for them in early January -‐ two grandsons: Hugh and Tina -‐ Henry John Evan and Christopher and Lisa -‐ Harrison George. Congratulations to the proud Grandparents and love to the new mums and dads and sons.To anyone else who has been unwell these past weeks -‐ please let Fr. Tim know. We do hope that all of you will soon be feeling better and we look forward to welcoming you in Church.
✟
A big Thank You to Fr. Tim for the delicious meal he prepared for the PCC’s of St. Paul’s Church Sketty, All Soul’s Church Tycoch and our Church. His cooking skills received much praise and applause from the 40 plus PCC members who attended on Tuesday 20 January. Congratulations Fr. Tim we were very proud of you.

David Cox sends Fr. Tim and Church Family many thanks for the gifts, cards, telephone calls and good wishes for his 90 Birthday. At a birthday luncheon party at Tapestri, he was taken by complete surprise when David Jones (Manager) brought in a lighted birthday cake and huge balloon and two gentlemen -‐ the gentlemen being David’s son Stephen and grandson Mark. They had travelled from Devon for the occasion -‐ both had to return that evening as Stephen is organist of three Churches and had to be in attendance the following day. David will keep fond memories of the happy day for many years to come.
thank youJeremy and Sarah would like to thank everyone for all the good wishes and support they received on the occasion of their wedding on January 3rd 2015.
It was a very special day enjoyed by all.
We, as a church, wish them well in their new life together.

Music SocietyWe held our first meeting of 2015 on January 12th when we welcomed David Morgan with his choice of music. As both our Chairwoman & our Secretary were unable to be with us, Barbara Roberts, with assistance from Pat, held the fort! Barbara was in charge of the music & Pat the money. I think it would be fair to say that we were in for an evening such we had not experienced in our Society before and, I suspect, not many of us, even in the privacy of our own homes, were familiar with most of David’s choices! David needed no introduction but was welcomed and away we went.
The title of the evening was ‘A Quirk of Music’; the definition of the word quirk was given to us as a trick or a peculiarity of action so we were warned. We started with the overture to William Tell, great
until heard as “played” by Spike Jones & his City Slickers which involved pots pans, cutlery, foghorns etc etc., definitely a quirky sound. Next came “Quirk chasing the Goose” by Karl Jenkins; this was followed by a Leonard Bernstein composition “Mambo” played by the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. A lot of
us had heard of this very different orchestra who play at an extremely frenetic pace but are very talented. David chose two more pieces by them when very different instruments could be heard, unfamiliar, as David said, to all of us! Next came George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” with which I think we were all familiar. Next came an unrecognisable “Blue Danube” played by Spike Jones & his City Slickers. (Just as well David announced the title beforehand!). A piece from Argentina, a work called “Mass for Creoles” with the Gloria sung by Jose Carreras was unusual but lovely. The evening finished with a most unusual interpretation of “The flight of the Bumble Bee”.
David was thanked, by Pat, for all the time and trouble he had taken to introduce us to well-‐known pieces of music played in different ways by unfamiliar artists and instruments.
Pat Stratton.

Matthew Beynon's London Marathon 2015 Page Fundraiser: Matthew BeynonMy page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MatthewBeynonHi, thanks for visiting my page.2015 is a very poignant year for me as it marks the 20th Anniversary of when my Dad, David Beynon, died of Prostate Cancer.Dad was larger than life with the most positive outlook on everything and lived life for the moment for his family and friends. This made me think that I wanted to do something in his memory, something BIG and there aren't many things bigger than running the London Marathon.l am thrilled to be able to run on behalf of Prostate Cancer Research and Development at my local centre of excellence for cancer services in Oxford, the same hospital where both my children were born. For those of you fortunate enough to know my Dad, knew an unbelievable person, with such a happy and fun loving outlook on life, l am going to need every bit of his positivity to get me through the training and the race; however l know he will be with me for every step of the way. l love you Dad!Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim Gift Aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. l really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations. Thanks so much Matt
aAs you can see from the above, my son is running the Marathon in aid of Prostate Cancer to mark the twentieth anniversary of the death of his and his sister Anna's father, and my late husband, who succumbed to the disease. I am sure that many of you will remember David and Matthew -‐ apart from attending worship at St. Hilary’s Church, they played cricket for the Parish. As a family we would appreciate it if you could sponsor him with a donation for this worthy cause -‐ however small.
Thank You Val Beynon

Ladies GuildOur first meeting in 2015, on 7th was poorly attended, partly due to the cold weather and also due to my mistake of the start date on last months' magazine report. My apologies for that.
No speaker had been arranged for the evening, so we entertained ourselves by means of a “Beetle Drive”. Some members were reluctant to begin with, but soon the laughter and shouts of “I've got a body” or “head” indicated that everyone was having a good time. The evening was a bit of fun and a chance to catch up on each others news.
Debra John was our speaker on 14th January with a magnificent talk on World War 1 and some of the famous people of that time. As usual, Debra dressed the part in a black coat, blouse, skirt, boots and jewellery of the period.
The first person she described was George Butterworth, a composer who loved all things English, such as cricket and Morris dancing. He was worried that this way of life would disappear as a result of war. He examined all his compositions
and destroyed many he thought were not “up to scratch” but retained “On Banks of Green Willow”. He then joined the Durham Light Infantry as an officer. George Butterworth was a brilliant officer to his men.
He was awarded the Military Cross but was too modest to tell his family. He was killed in action in 1916.
Her second character was Ellis Evans, a very gentle young man, who was a shepherd on his parents' farm near Trawsfynydd. He was a poet and a pacifist. His one aim in life was to win the Chair at the National Eisteddfod. As a shepherd, he was not required to join the army but later, when conscription required either him or his younger brother to enlist, he volunteered to protect his brother. Ellis Evans, whose Bardic name was Heddwyn, was killed in 1917 and was, posthumously, awarded the Chair later that year for his verse poem “Yr Arwr” (The Hero).
One of the women involved in the war effort was Betty Clement, a nurse whose parents ran the Coopers Arms in Plasmarl. She volunteered after hearing of the terrible suffering of the soldiers in the trenches. She was moved from Malta, to Serbia to Greece; food and clean water were always in short supply and, having been taken prisoner, she and fellow nurses were forced to sell their blankets to buy food. Betty Clement was repatriated and returned to Plasmarl in 1916.
Debra's acting when relating the stories was superb as she spoke of other courageous people involved in that
Parish of Killay February 201513
terrible conflict such as the young Scot, John Campbell, who was injured and sent to Porthcawl to recuperate; it is assumed he died after walking into the sea. He was suffering what was then known as “shell shock”.
All Guild members present agreed that this was one, if not the best, talk we have ever had. Thank you Debra.
Viv and Tudor Davies celebrated their DIAMOND wedding on 15th January, so Viv asked if Guild members would like to celebrate with her on Wednesday 21st.
The evening began with a humourous talk by Viv about their walking holidays which, sadly, they can no longer take because of Tudor's poor health. She began by opening her rucksack and producing everything needed on a long walk; waterproofs, boots, food and snacks, compass, plasters, antihistamine and, of course, a toilet roll! They have both been keen walkers since the age of 17, partly because they couldn't afford bus fares. Their walking holidays have taken them to many countries in Europe and also many parts of Britain. They once got lost in Devon; Viv blamed Tudor's map reading which he, of course, denied. We then moved on to the more serious part of the celebration, wine and cake!
Thank you Viv for a lovely evening and love and congratulations to you both from all your friends at Ladies Guild. May you enjoy many more happy years together.

Forget expensive hotels -‐ here’s an alternativeBefore the end of last year my family thought of visiting London for a few days, Thursday to Sunday, to see what the Capital has to offer and to satisfy a wish of mine which was to see professional tennis at the Royal Albert Hall. How were we to get there? By rail proved to be too expensive even if we took up their cheapest offer. The thought of travelling by coach did not appeal and so we took the option of going in the family car. The drawback to taking a car to London is not only the daunting thought of driving in all that traffic, but also there is a tax to be paid if you want to drive around the central area which could add a nasty sum to the trip. The alternative would be to drive up to London and stay in a hotel outside the central area and park there while you used London Transport to get about. Didn’t realise that going to a hotel in London during weekdays was more expensive than going up for a weekend, when there are price reduction offers to be had, and so the idea of a few days in London was shelved. That is until it was suggested that we could hire a private apartment instead of a hotel. That sounded good and the internet was searched to find a place to stay which suited our requirements which were near to the M4, near to the centre without taking the car into the zone and able to sleep at least three people and also, because of walking difficulties, near to the underground for easy access. We found a place which suited us and so booked it and went. Naturally we were apprehensive as to how it would turn out. We took the Junction 2 exit off the M4 and turned left into Gunnersbury Road and, passing through the lights controlling the junction with Uxbridge Road, motored north on Hanger Lane to the next very large roundabout. Here we did almost a complete circle to get off at 4th exit Twyford Road, first right Rossall Crescent follow around to meet Bispham Road, turn right and fifty yards along on your right you are there. It was so easy to find. The apartment is on the first floor of No 32.It was all we hoped for -‐ warm, clean and spacious with suitable decor. The kitchen held most modern equipment and the owners had left, not only the instructions of how to use each piece of equipment, but also everything needed to make a drink with biscuits etc to go with it and other edibles which were much appreciated. The sleeping was as good as most modern hotels and there were two bathrooms as well as a shower room. We could, and do, strongly recommend the place to anyone interested. If you have accesses to the internet go to: http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/west-‐london/1423112Here you will find a picture of the outside of the house and the apartment is first floor to the left of the front door. A description of all that the place has to offer is there including local places to eat, although they do not mention the take away on the roundabout which we thought was good.Hanger Lane tube station is a very short walk away and you are in central London in no time.If you do consider using this place I am happy to help you.

Mothers’ UnionThe 2015 programme commenced on January 6th. We met in the church for corporate communion led by Father Tim who gave a short talk about the Three Wise Men and explained that, due to different calendars, the Julian and Gregorian, Christ’s birth was probably not in December but, probably, earlier in the year. We retired to the Parish Hall for tea and a catch up on how our members spent Christmas. We met again on January 20th for our Annual General Meeting with Father Tim in the chair. The agenda was dispatched with his usual efficiency and good humour. Our Branch Leader, Treasurer, Registrar and Secretary were unanimously re-‐elected and the committee members were all happy to serve for another year. We were pleased to welcome two new members, Barbara Roberts and Jean Minchella; they were enrolled by Father Tim who presented them with membership cards and badges. Fr Tim thanked the Branch for actively participating in the church. It was an afternoon of companionship.Anyone wishing to come along to any of our meetings during the year will be very welcome, either alone or bring a friend. A full programme for the year is on the Mothers’ Union notice board in the Parish Centre with contact phone numbers.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, February 3rd at 2:00 pm with a talk by Lesley Ann Meagher on legal matters. On Friday, February 6th at 11:00 noon, the monthly Eucharist will be held in St Mary’s Church, Swansea.
National Marriage Week will be celebrated from 7th February to 14th February. There will be a display in the church of items relating to marriage, open to all to bring something to display. On Tuesday, February 17th at 2:00 pm, Shrove Tuesday, we will be having pancakes during the meeting with a Raffle and a Bring & Buy table.

Christmas Tree ExhibitionBeryl Harris and Sylvia Powell would like to thank all those who helped in any way with the recent Christmas Tree Festival.....including sponsors, church and community organisations, including local schools, who decorated trees and performed musical items, together with Church members who stewarded the Church and made refreshments for those attending. Thanks also to those who installed the platforms to hold the trees and removed them later. Each year, the Festival goes from strength to strength, and whilst the proceeds ensure that a 'break even' situation arises, this year we are able to make a donation of £100 to the Stepping Stones Appeal. With renewed thanks to you all for whatever contribution you made.
Thanks to everyone who bought Christmas Puddings. We made a profit of £230. I have a couple left over if anyone wants another.

I don’t go to town on Tuesdays always keep it free. It’s Mothers’ Union afternoon not evening as it used to be. The floor thrown open to air our views A lively discussion that then ensues. Carole’s there to keep us in order Things never ever go over the border. We do our best in our own small way to do some good in the world today.
First we have our service a lovely calming start. With Carole in the driving seat and vicar sometimes taking part. Next a cup of tea is just the ticket, especially when served with a nice cream biscuit No one takes more than their quota Who makes the tea?We have a rota.
High finance is next in line a very serious time. All eager to pay a small fee. So we can have our cup of tea. Alan says our books look healthy Next Christmas we’ll be quite wealthy.
We have a willing band of helpers Who visit sick and elderly members. The committee always works flat out When any functions come about. Time to settle down, our speakers turn. Always informative, we’re ready to learn.Sandra’s arranged the whole agenda. A difficult task from January to December. I really think she’s gone quite grey I hope and pray that she will stay.
Our meeting over, all had their say, We have to put the chairs away. Altar cloth folded, tables put back. Tea cups washed, and in a stack. Everyone out, put out the lights. Lock up, God bless, I’ll say good-night.

A LOVELY LITTLE ANECDOTE ABOUT ONE OF LIFE’S MORE INTERESTING CHARACTERS............
When Mahatma Gandhi was studying law at the University College of London, a white professor, whose last name was Peters, disliked him intensely and always displayed prejudice and animosity towards him. Also, because Gandhi never lowered his head when addressing him as he expected, there were always "arguments" and confrontations.
One day, Mr. Peters was having lunch at the dining room of the University, and Gandhi came along with his tray and sat next to the professor. The professor said, "Mr Gandhi, you do not understand; a pig and a bird do not sit together to eat."
Gandhi looked at him as a parent would a rude child and calmly replied, "You do not worry professor, I'll fly away," and he went and sat at another table.
Mr. Peters, reddened with rage, decided to take revenge on the next test paper, but Gandhi responded brilliantly to all questions
Mr. Peters, unhappy and frustrated, asked him the following question. "Mr Gandhi, if you were walking down the street and found a package, and within was a bag of wisdom and another bag with a lot of money, which one would you take?"Without hesitating, Gandhi responded, "The one with the money, of course."Mr. Peters, smiling sarcastically said, "I, in your place, would have taken the wisdom."Gandhi shrugged indifferently and responded, "each one takes what he doesn't have."
Mr. Peters, by this time was fit to be tied. So great was his anger that he wrote on Gandhi's exam sheet the word "idiot" and gave it to Gandhi.Gandhi took the exam sheet and sat down at his desk, trying very hard to remain calm while he contemplated his next move.A few minutes later, Gandhi got up, went to the professor and said to him in a dignified but sarcastically polite tone, "Mr. Peters, you autographed the sheet, but you did not give me the grade.”

15/11/12Dear All On behalf of Cyrenians Hostel I would like to thank you for your kind donations.
Your commitment to helping the homeless in your community is so important to us.
Thanks to donors like you we are able to use the toiletries and towels as part of a welcome pack for new residents. We can also provide food parcels for residents who are being resettled into their new homes. Items are also distributed through the year depending on availability. Clothes and household items are put to good use and financial contributions are also gratefully received.
These donations really do help to weather the crisis in their lives and are appreciated by the hostel staff and, most importantly, by those who receive them as gifts. Your donations make it possible to continue to provide these services despite the economic climate we currently find ourselves in.
Frankly we could not do what we do without donors such as you. We and those we support deeply appreciate your generosity.
On behalf of all of us Thank You Sian Thomas

How to make your flowers last longerPurchase some oasis from a florist or Wilkinsons. An Oasis is a hard green sponge which can be cut to size with a knife.
Cut the oasis to a size of 2 to 3 inches in the vase, then soak with water. Replace the top of the vase, lock it into place and put your flowers in, making sure that the stems enter the oasis, then fill with water.
It is advisable not to have the flowers too tall, so make sure that you cut at least 2 inches off the stems.
