FROM FR. EHLIDear Parishioners,
I am writing to you this week with a very important announcement, which I kindly ask you to share with your Catholic acquaintances, friends, and family.
In light of the decreased number of cases of COVID-19 in North Dakota and the distribution and administration of vaccines for COVID-19, Bishop Kagan is reestablishing the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days beginning the First Sunday of Lent (weekend of February 20-21, 2021). Between now and Ash Wednesday (February 17), more information will be made available to you regarding the Church's teaching on the Sunday/Holy Day obligation. We will also be determining how to best adjust our current directives and general provisions so as to accommodate additional Mass attendees. For example, more seating will be made available in the main body of the church while maintaining all of the current overflow seating areas. We will keep you informed as we work out the specific details regarding additional seating, social distancing, and mask-only areas, which will be printed in next weekend's bulletin. Please make sure to check the bulletin next weekend for any and all adjustments to our current practices.
Some of the current practices, however, will remain, such as Holy Communion under the one species of the consecrated Host, suspension of the Sign of Peace, no offertory procession with the gifts, and no face-to-face confessions.
Thank you, once again, for your patience and kind understanding throughout these past 11 months. Your faith, docility, and generosity have been truly inspiring.
In Christ,Fr. Ehli
As part of Catholic Schools Week, Cathedral School students displayed photos of their families in the main entrance of the school to acknowledge the role of families in Catholic education and celebrate their contributions to the success of our school. Thank you, Cathedral School families!
PLEASE REMEMBER IN PRAYERHoly Father's Prayer Intention for February
We pray for women who are victims of violence, that they may be protected by society and have their sufferings considered and heeded.

Sample Message: Please vote No on HB 1415. The people of North Dakota deserve better than assisted suicide.
When: Now. The House Health and Human Services Committee heard the bill on February 1. After they act on it, it will move to full House.
House Bill 1410 would protect religious freedom in state institutions and during emergency orders. Religious freedom is a fundamental right. Unfortunately, state law does not currently provide religious protections inside government institutions and during emergency orders. HB 1410 would fix that. The House Judiciary Committee heard testimony from the North Dakota Catholic Conference in support of the bill, but groups like the ACLU and American Atheists are opposing it. The committee needs to hear that North Dakotans want religious protections in state law. Please contact the House Judiciary Committee and tell them to support HB 1410.

February 2021 Society of St. Vincent de Paul Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Conference
With support from the Pro-Cathedral of St. Mary and Ascension
Catholic Church (Bismarck) and St. Joseph Catholic Church (Mandan)
“Go to the poor: you will find God.” St. Vincent de Paul _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Our Mission and Purpose
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the largest
Catholic lay organization in the world, brings
women and men together to grow spiritually by
offering person-to-person service to those
suffering and in need. Organized locally, the
members of our Cathedral Conference witness
God’s love by embracing and providing works of
charity and justice. The primary purpose of the
Society is the spiritual growth of its members.
Father Joshua Ehli, Rector of the Cathedral of the
Holy Spirit, recently offered the following
comments regarding the Cathedral SVDP
Conference: “An essential part of the mission of
the Church is to carry out the spiritual and
corporal works of mercy. The Society of St.
Vincent de Paul provides both spiritual help,
through prayer, and financial help to those in
need. SVDP volunteers take the time to pray and
discern how a particular person’s needs can best
be met. These volunteers invest the time to ensure
that those in need are not simply receiving a
handout, and that every dollar donated is used
wisely. Prayer, including praying directly with
those in need, is one of the things that makes
SVDP rewarding for all involved.”
Those We Serve – The Needs are Many!
On average, our St. Vincent de Paul phone help line
receives about 175 calls per month from those
needing assistance. For a variety of reasons,
financial assistance is often only provided to a
fraction of this number. In the last two months of
2020, 73 individuals and families were assisted by
our Conference. The most common help includes
rental assistance, utilities, food and clothing.
Whenever possible we meet directly with those we
are assisting, although money is never given
directly to them. This requires our Vincentians to
contact and verify information with landlords and
utility providers. Money is then sent to the landlord
or entity that is owed funds on behalf of the person
being helped.
A Story is Worth a Thousand Pictures
“Being a Vincentian helps me to maintain my
compassion and understanding for the poor. We
have all had struggles in our lives, and it is so true
that serving those who are struggling and suffering
brings you closer to God.” – V.B. (Vincentian)
A Certified Nursing Assistant missed 28 days of
work due to the pandemic and faced financial
hardship resulting in an eviction notice just prior to
Christmas. An SVDP volunteer prayed with her and
worked with the landlord to reopen the lines of
communication and reach a resolution. Utility
assistance was also provided by SVDP.
A mother who had been separated from her five
children unexpectedly got them all back without
notice and without winter clothes. SVDP provided
the tearful, thankful mother and children with hats,
coats, boots and gloves.
A young couple lost their child due to a miscarriage
and were struggling with subsequent emotional and
financial issues. SVDP provided both prayers and
rental assistance.
Society of St. Vincent de Paul _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Our Members
St. Vincent de Paul members, called Vincentians,
are parishioners who have a desire to grow in faith
and love by serving the poor. Deacon Randy
Schmidt serves as the Conference’s spiritual
advisor and leader. Vincentians are not
professionally trained social workers. The most
important qualification is simply the desire to serve
as Jesus served - with unconditional love.
Are You Called to Be a Vincentian?
The Catechism explains that “The works of mercy
are charitable actions by which we come to the aid
of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily
necessities” (CCC 2447). Additional members are
always welcome to live this mission! Join us for
meetings held the second and fourth Tuesday of
each month at 5:45 pm in the Cathedral lower level.
Our Financial Support – Thank You!
• Our largest source of funding is from
individuals, including our generous Vincentians
themselves.
• Our Conference receives parish funding from the
Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, the Pro-Cathedral
of St. Mary, Ascension Catholic Church and the
Church of Saint Joseph in Mandan.
• The Diocese of Bismarck provides support to the
SVDP District Council of Western ND, which is
comprised of four conferences located in
Bismarck, Minot, Williston and Dickinson.
• Our Conference also participates in the Direct
Your Dollars Program through Dan’s
Supermarket. For every $150,000 in Dan’s
receipts that parishioners save and turn in, the
Society receives $1,000. This simple method of
support provided over $2,000 in funding for
SVDP in 2020!
How You Can Help
• Consider joining us! Our members come from
all walks of life. We typically meet two times a
month to pray, reflect on the Sunday Gospel,
and discuss our work. You are welcome to
attend a meeting to find out more about the
Society.
• Help with special projects such as the Walk For
The Poor, preparing food baskets, or data entry.
• Make a monetary donation to SVDP, which can
be placed in the donation boxes at the Cathedral
church entrances, delivered to the Cathedral
office, or mailed to Cathedral SVDP, 519
Raymond St., Bismarck, ND 58501. SVDP is a
registered 501 (c)(3) charity with the IRS.
• Join us during our SVDP Holy Hour for the
Poor, offered at 6 pm at the Cathedral of the
Holy Spirit on the first Tuesday of each month.
• Refer someone in need. If you know of
someone in need of assistance, provide them
with the SVDP help line phone number, 701-
222-8011. The individual will be asked to leave
a message, and an SVDP member will return
their call.
• Pray the Vincentian Prayer: Lord Jesus, You
who willed to become poor, give us eyes and a
heart directed toward the poor. Help us to
recognize You in them – in their thirst, their
hunger, their loneliness, and their misfortune.
Strengthen us, so that, faithful to the virtues of
simplicity, humility and love, we may
contemplate You and serve You in the poor.
Amen.
Contact us at 701-222-8011 with any questions related to SVDP.
