The school is situated in Ottaviano, Naples, in the South of Italy, in theVesuvius National Park. It includes INFANTS, PRIMARY and the first yearof SECONDARY SCHOOL. The children live in a disadvantaged area withmany forms of socio-economic problems: unemployment, big and small
scale criminality, low level of school knowledge, a down-grade ambient. (Anight out in old town Naples was an experience in itself! Certainly not eco-friendly and health and safety does not seem to exist.)
Many of the students are migrants from North East Europe, Africa andChina. There are also many students with quite severe special needs.
During the last few years they have had a lot of problems with the disposalof rubbish. Litter was not just in the streets but literally hundreds of sackswere strewn all over the countryside spoiling, what could have been, abeautiful area. The school has total support and backing from the councilbecause they think their children need to be educated to respect nature, finding solutions to environmental problems and to be encouraged torecycle, if they want a better future. They were keen to encourage their
students to learn more in direct contact when speaking English in real lifesituations and to share experiences with students and staff from othercountries. Therefore, the majority of our time was spent with students fromItaly, Spain, Poland, Portugal and Bulgaria.

The balloons were a lovely touch. The school
is set in two buildings, this building being an

Nursery
These pencil pots are
made from pop
bottles with coloured
card wrapped
around.
Small classrooms
are used for
focused learning. The children in the nursery welcomed us
with songs in the hall. This was a large
open area with a tiled floor; a large slide
and a ball pool. They loved the balls.
Each of these painted figures
are hand drawn by an adult
making them all original.

Children still sit at desks,
just fewer numbers in the
group.
SecurityClassrooms are grouped
according to age. The doors open
outwards into large open spaces.
In each of these open spaces
sits a behaviour attendant who
watches children come and go.

1stYear of Secondary education
Our first English lesson!
This lesson is about securing a future for the
red squirrel. In England the grey squirrels
create the problems for the red squirrels but,
as yet, this is not a problem in Italy. Simon
devised a game to demonstrate how toprevent the same thing happening in Italy.

The children responded well
and enjoyed the activity and,
despite their concerns Alan andSimon did not encounter any
language problemsas all the
pupils could speak English!

The next lesson involved
pupils creating displays to
encapsulate the work
achieved in schools so far.
Children from Heaton
Avenue had drawn
pictures of some of our
endangered animals5
spot ladybird, turtle dove,
natterjack toad, cuckoo,brown hare, hedgehog
and the red squirrel.
These were used, with
drawings from the other
countries.
It was lovely to see work
from Cleckheaton, and
other partner countries,
displayed in Italy.

Professor Michelangelo Ambrosia,
Nuclear Physicist, visited to discuss
environmental change.
He spoke of the devastating effects
of the 3 major volcanic eruptions,
the multiple volcanoes, the unstable
landscape due to the split in
tectonic plates and the frequent
earthquakes.

The long, steep hike was well worth it.
The vapour rising to the left of the first
picture shows that the volcano is still
active. The temperature there is
probably about 35C. The crater hassealed over so when it next erupts the
effects will be as devastating as the one
that ruined Pompeii.

The
temperature at
this side of the
volcano is
around 100C.
Scientists know
that this is the
side that will
take the brunt
of the next
eruption.
Volcanic action isconstantly being
monitored. Three days
notice will be given for
the evacuation of the
area.
