Welcome New Readers!
The past couple of weeks we have added a number of new readers to our weekly FOCUS newsletter. I want to
extend my thanks to you for your interest in learning about the activities of Community Care Northumberland and
supporting our organizing either through a financial contribution and/or volunteer commitment.
This newsletter is a means for the CCN family to stay connected with each other across Northumberland County.
Whether you are a client, caregiver, staff member, volunteer, community partner, funder, donor or just interested in
our organization I hope the information you receive weekly will be of interest.
The title of our newsletter is FOCUS – an acronym for ‘Feeding our Curiosity, Uncovering our Strengths’. We believe
this name helps to guide our weekly sharing of successes, news, learning, sharing or ideas, promoting programs and
our people, and helping to get the word out about specific events. The FOCUS has been in circulation for almost
seven years with this upcoming issue being #360, a testament to the interest of our readers.
Take a couple of minutes with your morning coffee and have a read. We hope you find something of interest. Feel
free to comment on anything in the FOCUS and if you want to submit an article or column we would be happy to
consider. In addition, we sometimes have space to insert community events outside of CCN activities. Connect to the
FOCUS through this email [email protected].
Special thanks for this successful communications initiative go to Alicia Vandine, CCN Community Relations
Coordinator. Alicia ensures the FOCUS reaches your ‘in box’ usually on a Monday morning. She is the one gathering
information, stories, pictures and also sending friendly reminders to those who submit regular articles. Thank you.
Again, a warm welcome to our new readers, many who have signed up through our recent fundraising letter
campaign.
Trish Baird, Executive Director.
If you wish to be removed from the distribution list at anytime, simply send a reply to this linked email.
Community Diners in Hoards Station is Twice As Nice
Community Care Northumberland used to run a Community Diners program with the Stanwood United Church
and the Hoards Station United Church.
In 2016, the congregations from these churches, along with the Tabernacle church amalgamated to form the
Seymour United Church at 22 Hoards Church Road in Hoards Station.
Instead of cancelling the Community Diners program, the Seymour United Church choses to run 2 dates for
seniors in Trent Hills. These dates run on the 2nd Thursday and 3rd Thursday of each month. All the meals are
made on site and clients pay $10.00 each. The prepared dishes are passed around the tables family style. This
really promotes a sense of community.
“Socializing at our Diners is fun because we laugh a lot and we catch up on how everyone’s family is doing, "said a
client. “The meals are excellent and it’s a treat to eat out.”
The October dates were decorated in an autumn theme and meals followed
this theme too.
The October 11th date’s menu was ham, scalloped potatoes, mixed
vegetables, jello salads, coleslaw and rolls. Clients chose between
homemade carrot, vanilla and chocolate cake for dessert with tea or coffee.
The October 18th date’s menu was roast pork, whole potatoes, carrot salad,
mixed vegetables, gravy and rolls. Clients chose between pumpkin crumble
or applesauce cake.

Helping to Stop Fraud and Scams! - Feedback
Last week, we published information about helping to stop fraud and scams and received some feedback about
the call to action from one of our volunteers who is a retired Fraud Investigator.
“There are so many scams out there – grandparent, job, lottery, romance, investment, Bank Officer, Law
Enforcement Officer to name a few. Scams involving seniors are so successful because they are engaged long
enough to have them thoroughly confused. Then there are phishing emails for which the vulnerable are clicking
on the links and their computers are taken over.”
Their suggestion for a call to action was:
If anyone has contacted you through mail, email or phone that you are not familiar and that you did not initiate,
ignore all requests & advise someone you know and trust.
An important message and thank you for your feedback!
November 12th is National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day?
Motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor
Hansen collaborated on the first Chicken Soup for the Soul book,
compiling inspirational, true stories they had heard from their audience
members. The book was rejected by major publishers in New York but
accepted by a small, self-help publisher in Florida called HCI.
New Chicken Soup for the Soul titles and sequels to existing books have
been published on a regular basis since the first book came out in 1993.
As of 2017, the series includes more than 250 titles.
