Embroidery can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. In this project, designer Lisa Steed Davey has shown us a
variety of stitches, but you can make it easier by picking one stitch and repeating it on all of your felt shapes. If this necklace is a bit
too large for you, or perhaps a younger family member try making it with smaller felt
circles – easy peasy!

FELT CIRCLE NECKLACE
BONUS PROJECT
FELT CIRCLE NECKLACE1 Find the centre of the large teal circle and thread a needle with three strands of DMC stranded cotton in 166 (lime). Begin to embroider a coil, starting from the centre and working out to the edge using a back stitch. See Diagram 1.
2 For the large lime circle, use DMC stranded cotton in 3812 (turquoise), 166 (lime), E3849 (teal), 826 (royal blue) and 823 (navy). This felt circle is an example of buttonhole stitch. Make your stitches even by drawing circles on the back of the interfacing with a compass. See Diagram 2.
CUTTING GUIDE:Cut felt circles in the following sizes and iron interfacing to the back of each one: From teal felt:One 2.5cm circle, one 9cm circleFrom lime felt:One 2.5cm circle, one 5.5cm circle, one 9cm circleFrom ivory felt:One 2.5cm circle, one 5.5cm circleFrom royal blue felt:One 2.5cm circle, one 5.5cm circleFrom navy felt:One 2.5cm circle, one 5.5cm circle

3 For the small navy circle thread your needle with three strands of DMC 3865 (ivory). Cover the circle with seed stitch. See Diagram 3.
4 For the ivory medium felt circle, thread your needle with four strands of DMC 166 (lime), and from the centre start to embroider French knots. Stitch the knots close together in the middle then further apart. See Diagram 4.
5 For the medium royal blue felt circle, use the ‘Jacobean Couching’ or trellis stitch. Thread a crewel needle with two strands of DMC 166 (lime) for the trellis, then use DMC 3865 (ivory) to stitch over the trellis threads where they cross over. In each trellis square sew a French knot in 3865. See Diagram 5.
6 For the small teal circle use straight stitch to create a flower pattern, using two strands of DMC E334 (shiny blue). Use DMC 823 (navy) in between. See Diagram 6.

each of DMC 3865 (ivory), 3812 (turquoise) and 826 (royal blue). See Diagram 9.
10 For the small ivory circle, make a spiral of back stitch in two strands of DMC 823 (navy), embroidering around the edge in seed stitch.
11 Once you have embroidered all the circles lay them out as pictured below. Using a mini hole punch or a needle to make holes at the edge of each touching felt circle, thread through a 10mm jump ring so they all connect. Stay stitch by the jump ring to strengthen. Attach a chain with a toggle clasp.
7 For the royal blue small felt circle use two strands of DMC 166 (lime) and embroider an eye stitch. In between the green use DMC 3865 (ivory). See Diagram 7.
8 For the navy felt circle, decorate with a mix of all the stranded cotton colours in fly stitch, laying the stitches on top of each other. See Diagram 8. Cover the small lime circle in French knots using two strands of DMC 823 (navy) and DMC 3812 (turquoise).
9 Find the middle of the medium lime felt circle and start to sew up through the middle. Wrap around and come up through the same hole. Repeat evenly around the felt circle, using two strands
