• Hehascoached,StAndrewsfencerstotake1stand2ndplaces at the Scottish Open, individual finalists in the premierdivisionBUCSchampionships,theMen’sATeamto the 2011 BUCS premier division final and the 2014 Women’s team Scottish Conference winners.

• HehashelpedcoachJuniorandSeniorScottishSquads.• HealsohelpedcoachtheScottishSaltiresPentathlonfencers.• WhilelivingintheUSAhewasafinalistintheArizonaOpenandin2002was

awarded ‘ teacher of the year’ from Wichita State University’s Department of Kinesiology.

• WhileinhisroleasaDirectorforScottishFencinghehelpedsetupworkshopsforthe coaching of wheelchair fencing and organised courses for refereeing.

• InrecentyearshehasbeenregularlytravelingtoItalytostudytheteachingmethodologies of one of the world’s leading fencing nations.

Head CoachProf Phil Carson BA(Hons), MBA, British Academy of Fencing, has been involved in fencing for over 30 years and has been coaching since 1986. He is a full three weapon diploma master with the British Academy of Fencing (BAF)

• PhilhashonedhiscoachingskillsbytravellingextensivelytostudysomeofthebestcoachesinRussia,HungaryandtheUSA.AsaresulthisclubinLondonbecameoneofthestrongestsabrefencingclubsintheUK.

• Asaresultofhissuccesses,in2012hedecidedtobecomeafulltimecoach.After a short time in Sydney, he helped to set up the coaching and performance programmesinwhatisnowthelargestfencingclubinAustralia.

• HeiscurrentlythecoachtoseveralScottish,BritishandCommonwealthChampions.

Fencing ClubTheUniversityofStAndrewsisdevelopingoneofthemostadvancedfencingprogrammesinScotland.Theprogrammeoffersstudentathleteshighlevelcoaching,trainingandsupport opportunities, allowing them to excel in their sporting and academic achievements. SportatStAndrewsfostersahealthyrelationshipbetweenathleteandstudent.Ourathletes graduate with a world-class education and a great sporting experience. Fencing is achallengingsportrequiringlightningquickreflexes,subtletacticalproblemsolvingandgritty determination.

The Club

• TheFencingClubisoneoftheUniversity’shighperformanceclubsandoffersstructuredclasssessionsinthe3weaponsofFoil,EpeeandSabre.

• TheprogrammeisrunbytheDirectorStanStoodley,HeadCoachPhilCarsonandastudent committee.

• Theclubisveryfriendlyandinclusive,committedtoprovidingmembersofallabilities,fromabsolutebeginnerstoexperiencedinternationalists,withanopportunitytoexplore the sport of fencing to their own individual needs.

• WithstudentsfromFinland,Italy,America,China,Mexico,GermanyandFrance,theFencingClubisatrulymulticulturalenvironmentwerestudentsgettomeetandmakefriends with others from all over the world.

• Clubsocialeventsarepopularandregularlyorganised.• Studentsarealsoofferedanopportunityforpersonaldevelopmentthroughstudent

leadership programmes.

The Facilities

• Currentlywehave3pistesthatweuseformatchesandteamtraining.• Groupfootworkandbladeworksessionsareheldinthegymnasium.• WehaveexcellentgymfacilitiesattheSportsCentrealongwithtopclassStrength&

Conditioningstaffwhodevelopsportspecificprogrammesforourathletes.• Overthenext3yearstheClubfacilitiesarescheduledforexcitingimprovementswith

plansforagreaternumberofearthedpistesandnewscoringapparatus.Withtheseimprovementswehopetoincreaseourmembership,holdBritishUniversitiesandColleges Sport (BUCS) and Scottish Student Sport (SSS) matches and host our own tournaments and training camps.

The Fencing ProgrammeThe Teams

• CurrentlywehaveaWomen’sATeamintheBUCSpremierdivision,aMen’sATeamintheBUCSpremier division and a Men’s B TeamintheTrophyCup.

• TheUniversityofStAndrewsFencingClubhasalongandsuccessful history within Scottish Student Sport (SSS) (2014 ladies individual foil championandtheWomen’sConferenceTeamwinners)andBritishUniversitiesandCollegesSport(BUCS–2011Men’sTeampremierdivisionfinalists),withboththeWomen’sAandMen’sATeamscompetingintheBUCSpremierleaguewhereteamstake part in weekly matches against other British universities.

The Squads

• Teamselectionsarebaseduponindividualperformancewithintheclubsteamtry-outeventsandotherexternaltournaments.SquadtrainingisonceaweekwithmatchesbeingfoughtonaWednesdayafternoon.

• TheSquadsaresupportedbyamultidisciplinaryteamwithaccesstocoaches,strength and conditioning specialists, nutritionists, massage therapists, physiotherapists and sports psychologists.

• PlayerssettheirownperformancegoalswiththehelpoftheDirectorofFencingand the Head Coach.

• Regularvideoanalysisisavailableforsquadplayersthroughouttheseason• Playersareencouragedtoenterindividualtournamentsregionally,nationally

and where appropriate internationally.• Aholisticintegratedapproachtotrainingisconstantlybeingdeveloped, monitoredandevaluatedinordertoincreasetheeffectivenessofourprogramme.

Club players

• Theclubalsooffers2sessionsduringtheweekforrecreationalfencing.Studentcoacheshelpwiththedevelopmentofthelessexperiencedmembers.

• ClubmembersprogressattheirownrateandhaveaccesstotheHeadCoachandDirectorforguidanceandappropriateadvice,beitfunoradvancementontooneofthe teams.

Coaching Education & Outreach

• Studentshavetheopportunitytotakelevel1coachingexamswhilestudyingatStAndrews and encouraged to apply their new skills in outreach programmes for local schoolchildrenandClubs.
