—Principal Message It is hard to believe that it is already April and that
we only have one quarter of the school year left!
Fourth term is the perfect time to reflect with your
child on the last three terms and their vision of
what the future may bring. Encourage your high
school students to share with you their post-
graduation goals and dreams, and then discuss
with them the possible courses they should be
taking in the next few years. In order to provide both parents and
students with as much information as possible about high school
expectations please contact Mr. Frey, our school guidance councillor.
Our midterm report cards went home with students on Friday, April
11th. Be sure to ask your child to see their latest report. Fairview
High School is again having Parent Teacher Interview night on April
16th; please attend as we want to be sure that all families are
up-to-date on their student's progress. If you have questions about
the midterm report cards, please don't hesitate to contact the
classroom teachers.
One initiative that we have started here at FHS is to get to know our
community so that we can work as partners in the Fairview area. As
we close in on the summer months, many of our students will be
looking for summer work experience. As a school we can offer
workplace credits for these enterprising students. I distributed a letter
through the Fairview Chamber of Commerce to all member
businesses introducing myself and letting everyone know that we are
open for business. I stated “One area where the community can take
an active role is workplace experience and apprenticeship training.
Fairview High School has many students who would excel in the
workplace if given the opportunity. This type of off campus
experience allows students the ability to see what work is like and to
determine if this type of activity is something that they wish to
pursue. In addition, apprenticeship training is essential to fulfill the
commitment; the Peace River School Division has, in providing
skilled workers for our community.” Please give this some thought if
you can hire students.
April brings all kinds of extracurricular activities to the students of
FHS. Junior and Senior Badminton teams are well underway. We
are anxious for the snow to melt so we can move outside on to the
field and provide a little more breathing room in the gym. At that
time we start thinking about soccer and track and field.
I wish everyone a safe and happy Easter Break.

Superintendent’s Message
School Improvement On behalf of Peace River School Division (PRSD) I would like to thank students, staff, par-ents, businesses, organizations and community members for your contributions in the area of school improvement. On the 2013 Alberta Education Accountability Pillar Report PRSD scored 81% in this measure and scored higher than the provincial average. The definition of school improvement may be unique to every person. For some people school improvement can mean increased options, satisfaction with staffing, more technology in the classroom, increased wellness and positive school culture programs, changes to timetables, physical upgrading to
schools and athletic equipment. In order to further define school improvement as a way to inform school and divisional planning, the board of trustees is asking “How do you think your school has improved?” through PRSD’s online discussion board. The discussion board is open to students, staff, parents and community members and to date 80 comments have been submitted from nine schools in the division. We are thrilled to report that the majority of responses are from stu-dents and staff and invite you to log in and join the conversation. Increased conversations surrounding school improvement leads to increased school spirit which hopefully leads to increased student success. Input is being reviewed by staff, students, management and the board of trustees. The information will help schools, school communities and the division more effectively plan for the future. Thank you for your important contributions to our schools and thank you in advance for helping us to better define school improvement so that we can continue to fulfill our divisional mission of “learning together, success for all.” To view the division’s Accountability Pillar Results please visit our website at www.prsd.ab.ca , choose the Students and Parents portal, Documents and Downloads icon and choose Education Plans. School based Education Plans are also posted on individual school
websites. Paul Bennett Superintendent of Schools Peace River School Division No. 10
Introducing
FHS School of Business
Fairview High School has put together a program pathway for students to pursue their passion
in business. A package of course work and independent student centred learning will allow
students to investigate what it is like to create, development and run a business of their own.
Students will progress over a two year period of time, achieving all of their compulsory
courses and a set of business oriented courses that will give them a heads up for entering
either a business workplace assignment or post-secondary education in the business field after
their high school career is completed.
Students will need to sign up for the program, as there will be a limited enrolment to begin
with. In addition, interviews will be held for students to express their business orientation and
ideas.
All students will graduate from Fairview High School in Grade 12 with an Alberta High
School Diploma and a Certificate of Achievement in the FHS School of Business.
Interested candidates will be asked to pick up an information package later this week, with
sign up during the last weeks of April and interviews in May.
Please contact Mr. Frey or Mr. Complak for further information.

Growing Readers: Reading Comprehension Reading tips for parents with readers of all ages
Reading with comprehension means understanding what’s been read. It takes practice, time, and patience to develop reading comprehension skills. Families can play an important role in helping a child learn to read for understanding. Some strategies parents might like to use to support reading at home include: Making sure your child is reading at their level. A book that is too hard frustrates a
child. If a book is too hard, all your child's energy will be put into decoding and reading word for word, with less energy available to figure out what the book means. Books that your child can read almost all the words are good choices for
comprehension building. When you read with your child, ask them questions as they move through the book: Why did
Mr. Smith do that? How do you think Suzy feels?
Help your child make connections between the book and their own life. Ask them how they feel about a situation in the book or what they would do if they were the character in the book.
Help them make connections between the book and other things they have read. Ask them: What other stories have you read that talk about going on a trip?
Set aside at least 20 minutes to read every day.
Help your child find books that they enjoy. This keeps them motivated.
Make reading more important than TV.
Model reading yourself. Children need to see parents read for fun.
Encourage writing. Have children write about what they have read or keep a daily journal.
You may find that some of the strategies above work very well, but all strategies may not work for every child. Focus on what works the best for you and your child. For more details about supporting your child’s reading growth, you may wish to read the article be-low:

Mental Health Matters, Every Child Counts!
When we get busy and life gets stressful, it is important to remember that there are always great things around you to be found. Learn to appreciate and make the most of what you have. Live in the moment and use these hints to help you and those you care about to have more fun and ENJOY life.
Enjoy where you live Even if this is not your first choice of places to live, you can still make the best of it. Explore
the Peace River region. Find all of the fun things to do. Pretend you are a tourist. Go in that museum you have passed
by. Check out some local music or that restaurant you haven’t yet tried. Play at the various parks with your kids
Every community is full of hidden opportunities just waiting to be found. You'll have a blast enjoying your
community .You may find this area is your first choice! If not, when the chance does come to move to your dream
location, you won't have regrets and won't have to say, "I wonder what was in that store," or "I wonder how good their
food really was."
Enjoy your friends
Friends are important to our well-being. A friend is someone to have fun with, to laugh with, a shoulder to cry on,
someone to talk to, to vent to. Don't take your friends for granted. Make plans to have lunch or coffee with a friend you
haven’t connected to for a while. Set up a play date for the kids with that neighbor you always talk to.
Talking and socializing is good for us and makes us happy. Enjoy spending time with your friends, and never take
friendship for granted. You have to nurture any relationship for it to grow.
Enjoy your family
Family is certainly one of the most important parts of your life. Families come in all forms. Whether your family is your
husband or wife, your parents, your spouse and kids, or your siblings, or a family simply some grouping of people who
you live with and care about, make sure you spend quality time with them. Your “family” is there for you more than an-
yone else ever will be. Have fun with them. Go out dancing with your sister or cousin. Take a walk down memory lane
with your parents by watching old home movies or going through photo albums. Have a date night with your spouse.
Take the kids to the movies. Call that cousin you haven't talked to in forever.
Really talk to and spend time with your family. Laugh and have adventures together, even if you are just staying home.
Watch movies, play games, try new foods. It's good for them and for you.
Get a pet
Pets are good for the soul. They help relax us and keep us calm, and they will love you no matter what. Visit a shelter
and adopt an animal. Whether a kitten or an old dog the animal you choose will love you unconditionally. Not only will
you have a new friend, but you will also feel great with the knowledge that you gave that animal a life.
Continued-
Do the things you love
We can get so busy with work and other commitments we forget to take time for ourselves. Find your perfect hobby.
Whether you love photography, painting, writing, hiking, or sports, make sure you take time out for what you love.
Taking time for ourselves is refreshing, comforting, and is good for your overall mental health. So even when you seem to
always be doing for others, make sure to do for you, too!
Life is too short to not have fun. Spend time with the people you love and
do things that you love. Embrace new experiences, have few regrets, and
ENJOY!
