Healthcare in Europe is entering a new challenging era. Not only is there an increased demand for healthcare services and new customer expectations, but higher quality and cost saving targets have to be met. To preserve the principles of universal coverage and solidarity in financing care provision, important changes are needed in the healthcare organisation and reimbursement mechanisms.
The challenges that many healthcare systems in Europe and around the world are facing, cannot be met by a ‘business as usual’ approach. This urgent transformation will require new ways of working. In-depth changes in healthcare delivery are needed, not only at the patient level, but also by integrating currently fragmented care processes. Hospitals will play a critical and active role in this paradigm shift.
In this upcoming era of Integrated Care, hospitals and other care providers will collaborate and share patient data, knowledge and insights from day-to-day operations, with a focus on continuous care, disease prevention and disease management.
This is the beginning of a long term journey. The combination of innovative technologies and new communication systems, will enable healthcare organizations to connect and coordinate patient care delivery. Furthermore, it will offer greater transparency, flexibility and choice, and increasing access to the services available.
