Fission/Fusion Review

Recall ­­ Nuclear energy is stored in the nucleus of an atom.• Law of Conservation of Mass (and 

Energy)  ­­ Nuclear energy combines the two.

This energy can be released in one of two ways.

Nuclear Fission • The nucleus is split when hit by a neutron.• Two smaller nuclei of different elements are 

formed.

Nuclear Fusion• Two nuclei are joined together (fused)into 

a larger nucleus.• Happens inside the sun.

Nuclear Power• Uses the heat of fission to create steam, 

which drives an electrical generator.

Nuclear Power (Continued)• Advantages over Fossil Fuels> Less air pollution> Costs less to operate
