National Central University is dedicated to coop-
erate with a company setting “electricity-
generating fitness machine” on campus. In gym
class every student will generate electricity about
150 watts per one hour in the future. Director of
N.T.C Research Center, Faa-Jeng Lin says an ath-
letics student can produce more than 450 watts.
If power generated exceeds machine needs, the
power will feed into system capacity.
Rhymebus general manager Jarsun Lin who con-
tributed to research for electricity-generating
elliptical trainer says, the elliptical machine is also a very popular exercise equipment in America
and Japan, especially Brazil gives prisoners shorter sentences by riding elliptical bikes. It’s the
best way for alternative energy. Prisoners can reduce a day off their sentences for every 16 hours
they pedal. In the future, R-rider will be feasible products around the world if it can be applied
across the school, gym, residential center, etc.
National Central University intend to promote “Turns Exercise into Electricity”. Now, led by Union
of Research Center Faa-Jeng Lin, the school already sets 20 R-rider now. The average student can
generate about 150 watts during an hour of exercise. An athletics student can produce more
than 450 watts, more than half a horsepower and set off the power generation reach 0.5 kw/hr.
Faa-Jeng Lin said, if you could make use of kinetic power to produce electricity, the excess power
can be the sources of energy and also connected to smart gird system. At first each bike gener-
ates power towards the gym usage. While R-Rider generates more power than gym needs, it also
can supply the electricity for other departments to use.
Currently, besides the National
Central University, Taipei Tech
University and Hungkuang Uni-
versity also has such fitness
equipments to use. Green energy
and carbon reduction will also be
important to all over the world
as they are looking for renew-
able energy technologies and
sustainable energy. Thus, the
trend of using elliptical machine
to ride and generate electricity
will be much more practical and
green to the earth.

Hungkuang Technology University has put
the plan into practice half a year ago. They
set 5 R-rider fitness bike and elliptical at the
gallery, and the average month can generate
about 150 watts. Student makes the exercis-
ing energy will feed into power generation
system, and then provide electricity for
school immediately. And some student uses
elliptical trainer to achieve weight loss.
The average person can generate about 150
watts during an hour of exercise, equal to 30
cell phones or a refrigerator storage capacity.
Student Fujiang Yang says just 30 minutes of
exercise every day can achieve weight loss
and generate electricity. It's good for achiev-
ing in energy conservation and carbon reduc-
tion. It is beneficial to green the earth.

International News Brazilian inmates reduce sentences by
hitting the bike, books July 16, 2012 By Mariano Castillo, CNN
(CNN) -- For hours at a time, Ronaldo Marcelo Wanderlei da Silva pedals on a stationary bike for
a cause. But it is not an ordinary bike, nor an ordinary cause.
Da Silva is an inmate at the prison in Santa Rita do Sapucai,Brazil, near Sao Paulo. He is among a
small group of inmates who have been given the chance to lower their sentences by exercising
on customized stationary bikes attached to car batteries that charge as they pedal. The batteries
are in turn used to power street lights in the local plaza.
The program exists only at this one prison, but is not the only recent effort at out-of-the-box
thinking in Brazil's penal system.
Jose Henrique Mallmann, a judge in Santa Rita do Sapucai, came up with the idea for the pedal-
ing program while doing internet searches for cost-free, clean energy sources. It was a personal
curiosity, he said, and it led him to a story about an American gym that is partly powered by its
patrons' bicycle workouts.
In his small city, it was easy to adapt the idea and put it in practice with the local prison, he said.
The program provides a type of poetic justice, he said. Most inmates at some point deprived a
sense of security from their victims. Now, by providing clean energy that powers the city's plaza
at night, they are providing a sense of security.
"This has been very well received. We are very satisfied with the public reaction," Mallmann said.
Brazil's prisons, by and large, are overcrowded and unpleasant places. According to the ministry
of justice, Brazil's prisons are at 167% of capacity, as of December 2011. The prison population
has more than doubled since 2001.
But new initiatives are finding creative ways to address these issues while helping inmates and
society at the same time.
