Five Compelling Reasons to Go With SurfBeam®
The SurfBeam® approach to satellite networking offers five major benefits over other systems, allowing us to change the price/performance paradigm for consumer/SOHO satellite Internet access via satellite.
Lowest Bandwidth Costs/Highest System CapacityAdvanced modulation and turbo codes are combined with powerful, dynamic fade mitigation techniques to give your bandwidth the ability to carry more bits. Compared with the current DVB standard, these features result in a capacity 100% to 150% higher per transponder at Ku-band.
Lowest Infrastructure CostSurfBeam is built around third and fourth genera-tion hardware and software developed for the cable modem and Direct-to-Home (DTH) television mar-kets. The maturity of this system and the high degree of integration results in enhanced functionality and reduced capital and operational costs in the gateway. At the gateway, a single 19-inch rack provides all the functionality you’ll need. Equivalent DVB-RCS equipment would require ten to 14 racks of hard-ware.
Lowest Terminal CostAdding unique firmware and a satellite Intermediate Frequency interface to the latest in Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) and DTH chipsets gives you the SurfBeam subscriber termi-nal. The high degree of integration and high volume production of the chipsets greatly reduces the costs of the satellite modem.
Excellent Customer ExperienceLow capital and operating costs are meaningless without a satisfactory user experience. DOCSIS-based services have proven their acceptance with over 30 million subscribers. And SurfBeam requires no software installation and custom configuration on the customer computer.
Lowest Operational CostsFor large scale network deployments with a single terminal per customer, the operational costs can become a significant component of the total cost of service. SurfBeam can be deployed with mature OSS and BSS systems offering automated service man-agement, provisioning, network management and diagnostics, Customer Service Representative sup-port, billing, etc.
ViaSat’s broadband Internet-over-satellite system is unlike any VSAT system, so it gives you all new advantages over the competition. For reaching home and small office customers with cost effective band-width ANYWHERE, SurfBeam is the next genera-tion system for you.

SurfBeam is a new standards based, satellite system that enables you to offer broadband Internet access to your current markets, and reach new customers be-yond. It starts with the proven economics of cable mo-dem systems and adds the wide, immediate coverage of satellite. Along with your existing customer base, distribution channels and support capabilities you’ll have a platform for rapid penetration into the broad-band access market. You can pick and choose the best customers, without the cost or delays in building ter-restrial connections to reach them.
This product is a totally new kind of satellite-based system for broadband networking, not like modified VSAT systems that have failed to prove themselves among consumers. This new technology can drop monthly service cost1 down to $39 on broad beam satellites and below $20 on spot beam satellites, while providing an excellent user experience that scales to millions of subscribers.

Subscriber TerminalComponents include an Outdoor Unit (ODU) similar to a DTH satellite television dish, but with transmit capabilities, and an Indoor Unit (IDU) comparable in size and function to a desktop ADSL or cable modem. The ODU includes a compact satellite reflector and feed, transmit and receive electronics, and an associ-ated mounting kit to affix the unit to the customer’s home.
The IDU is just 23 by 23 by 3.8 cm (9 by 9 by 1.5 inches) with a sleek design to fit with other modern personal computing and telecommunications equip-ment, and interfaces to the customer’s computer or home network via a standard Ethernet connection. The IDU may be oriented on the customer’s desktop either horizontally or vertically to preserve desk space. Two cables connect the indoor and outdoor units.

Satellite HubThe SurfBeam hub consists of five components, con-nected by its own LAN infrastructure:
SMTS-1200 based on a state-of-the-art Cable Mo-dem Termination System (CMTS). This carrier-class edge device manages and controls traffic between satellite network subscribers and the satellite gate-way and can route more than 42 million packets per second while managing 16,000 simultaneous traffic flows per satellite interface.
Integrated Performance Enhancing Protocol (PEP) to provide high performance for TCP/IP over broadband, geosynchronous satellite channels. PEP client software is integrated in each subscriber terminal, so no additional software is required on the customer’s computer.
Device Provisioning System provides the provi-sioning and management of subscriber terminals with regards to addressing, device configuration, and security.
Element Management System leveraging the well defined Management Information Bases (MIBs) from DOCSIS™ 1.1. The NMS queries and configures devices, and keeps you informed on the status of the network.
Routing/Switching Infrastructure for access to both the backbone Internet and to the Network Operations Center
Gateway redundancy of all mission critical service elements is designed into the basic gateway architecture.
