The works in this exhibition were developed out of a cluster of activities
of the art & photography class (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna) that took
place in the Spring Semester of 2010. During that period the students di-
vided themselves into five workshops, each dealing with a different topic
related to the field of art photography; the students discussed these top-
ics theoretically throughout the semester, created artworks in response to
the discussions and subjected each other to critique. Many of the works
shown here are direct or indirect results of these group practices.
The following five topics were explored throughout the class meetings
and are displayed in the exhibition.
Abstraction and Spectacle
Artists like James Welling investigated in their work the type of abstract
effects which lend visual images an air of spectacles.
Appropriation
Works of this type knowingly build on existing visual materials – wheth-
er related to other works of art, media images or pop-culture. Among the
pioneers of that artistic genre were Richard Prince and Sherrie Levine.
Portraiture and Power
Another well-known type of art-photography is preoccupied with the
enduring codes that underly the visual representation of power. In this
group we find artists such as Jeff Wall, Tina Barney and Clegg & Gutt-
mann.
Self Representation
The self-portraits of Cindy Sherman inspired an entire genre dedicated
to the visual exploration of the artist’s identity as it is determined by the
images circulated through art and the media.
Visual Sociology
Another important sub genre of art photography is dedicated to sus-
tained essays on various visual aspects of the social environment. Promi-
nent in this group are the works of the Bechers and of their students
Ruff, Gursky etc.
The topics chosen were the central concerns of the art photography
movement of the 1980’s – a period when the field came into its own.
It follows, then, that as the class discussed these themes it was in fact
reflecting on the nature of art –photography as we know it today. It goes
without saying that each of the different themes underwent a radical
transformation; (the concept of appropriation, for example, is treated
entirely differently in our day and age.) As a result, the reflections on the
five themes we have outlined did not serve only a historical purpose; by
investigating how have our perceptions of each of the themes metamor-
phosed in the last three decades, the participants in these show inquired
into the network of continuities and breaks that define the contempo-
rary character of the art – photography field itself.

In Anlehnung an Lucio Fontanas Arbeiten "Tagli", seiner Werkreihen "Concetto speziale",

An old man is sitting on a park bench. It is a beautiful day. The grass is green, the sun is shining, his children and grandchildren are all around, everybody is enjoying themselves. The two great grandchildren are playing hide and seek. It is hot but not too hot, a silent wind is blowing a summery breeze through the leaves of the trees. One can hear the bees flying from one flower to the other. It is a beautiful day. An old man is sitting on a park bench.

Representation of power through photography usually follows
certain codes. But: who defines the meaning of these codes?
And: can one change them just like that?
According to this questions, this work deals with power reala-
tions as a rather variable than a constant condition.
