Daniel Kalai
United States Marine Corps
Born to Daniel Sr. and Anna Kalai, Danny K. as he is affection-
ately called, lived a heroic life. His father was from Hawaii
and enlisted in World War I to gain U.S. citizenship. His Dad
would go on to become a highly decorated Army infantryman.
Danny Jr. was still a boy when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He
did not forget that day and enlisted in the Marines when he
turned eighteen in 1948. He served in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and
Florida as a marksmanship instructor. Danny was near the end of his time in service when the
Korean war broke out. He was automatically retained by the Marine Corps sent to Korea.
After leaving the Marine Corps in 1952, Danny became a Philadelphia Police Officer. Danny was
decorated several times for his actions in the line of duty. Those actions included single-
handedly capturing a murderer, and shooting a gunman who shot his patrol partner. Danny later
sustained an injury to his shooting hand and was medically retired. He went on to work exten-
sively with the teamsters in Pennsylvania, California, and Hawaii.
Music was always a big part of his life. His father had a Hawaiian show and so did Danny later
on. He met his wife Eleanor (Terry) at a dance. They would go on to have five children,
Danny III, David, Doreen, Diana, and Denise.
Over the last eight years or so Danny had his own karaoke show in the area. He continues to
sing and perform right here at the Delaware Valley Veterans Home.

After a roller coaster ride of a season, an injury list that looked like the ER, and a humiliating
37-10 earlier defeat to the arch rival Dallas Cowboys, our Philadelphia Eagles picked them-
selves up off the mat and got up to fight. (cue the theme song from Rocky 1)
In a rematch, the Eagles took it to the Cowboys at the Linc, with the defense holding them to 0
(that’s zero) touchdowns in a 17-9 victory to take control of the NFC East. The following week
the birds continued to take care of business thumping the NY Giants 34-17 to win the division.
All eyes are now on Carson Wentz and a cadre of rookie backups who have now won four
games in a row and are rolling into the playoffs.
The Eagles will face Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks in Philly, Sunday January 5th at
4:40 pm. The Seahawks have re-signed retired running back Marshawn (Beast Mode) Lynch af-
ter a number of injuries to their running back cadre. This looks to be a game, with the Sea-
hawks favored by 1 1/2 points. My call, the 12th man, the Eagles crowd makes it difficult for the
ever nimble Russell Wilson to hear and to call audibles - the Eagles win 24 –17.
(Sorry Dallas Fans.)

January 2020
The Christmas Season was a blast. The annual Christ-mas Dinner for residents and their family members was a great success. We had a violinist and guitarist play during dinner and the residents and families enjoyed it. Santa Claus also made an appearance.
We had numerous quality events including; birthday bash party for residents, Cooties Christmas Party, bin-gos, lunch and a movie, Christmas carolers, Hanukkah party, cookie baking, catered luncheons, and many oth-er events.
All our residents received Christmas gifts from various organizations. I would like to thank these organizations for making Christmas so special for our residents.
We also had an Eagles Tailgate Party. We continue to watch the Eagles as they look for a win in round one of the playoffs.
I would like to thank each and every one of my staff who help me on a daily basis to make this a great facility for our veterans.
We all look forward to a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
Peter
