Runninghelpedmegrowup.Growingup,Iwasanimpulsive,reserved,impatient,andoftenanxiouschild.However,whenIbegantoruncross-country,mypersonalityslowlychanged.Myteamgavemereasonandmotivationtobeoutgoingandtoworkhardforagoal.IlearnedtocontrolmyemotionsasIpreparedforracesandaboutthewonderfulstressreliefthatrunningalongrunintheraincanbring.ThoselessonsarethereasonthatIcoach.Iwantrunningtoofferthesameopportunityofchangetomyathletes.

3. Mydogssavemybrain.Withabusylife,mybrainisusuallyrunningamillionmilesaminute.Stressisanaturalpartofallofourexperiences.Formanypeople,teachingandcoachingissimplytoomuch.Theiramygdalaisalwaysactive,tellingthemthattheyhavemoretodoandstrengtheningneuralconnectionsinthestresscenterofthebrain.However,mydogsaremysaviorsfromstress.ThereisnothingIlovemorethanlayingwithmydogs,pettingthemandlettingthestressoftheworlddisappear.Thisallowsstresstodissipateandformyfrontallobetotakebackcontrolofmyemotions.

4. Blazergamestransformme.WhileIamusuallyacoolcustomer,whenIgetintheModaCentercrowd,Itransform.Iclap,Icheer,andIscreaminunisonwiththousandsofotherrabidfans.Iwillbeoneoftheloudestfansintheupperbowl.ItisherethatthecrowdtakesoverandIamhappytoconformtothegroupnorms.Thesharedemotionofthegameisworththepriceofadmission.

Icook,Iclean,Iplay,andIloveit.WhilemyGrandmaisalwayssurprisedbyit,Iamtheoneinmyhouseholdtocook,clean,andmaintainthehome.Thegenderrolesofoursocietyhaveshiftedandithasbecomemuchmoreacceptedandcommonformentoplayakeyroleinthehousehold.IlearnedthisfrommyownDad.Afteryearsoftravellingforwork,hequithisjobandsplithistimebetweenbeinganentrepreneurandamoderndaynurturer.Westillwatchedsportsandallthatmanlystuff,butwediditafterhemademeabowlofmacandcheese.IcarrythiscompassionandnewperceptionofmanlinessinthewayIplaywithmynieces.
