37 The Voice of the Martyrs Bold Believers in Vietnam
X: What did you eat? Scott: Well, let’s see … I had (add answer). X: This is what they gave me. (shows dirty food and describes) They don’t offer their best food to Christian prisoners. Scott: I can see that. X: But Jesus said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” I have been greatly comforted by the Bible verses that I memorized before I came here. Kristy: Memorized? Don’t you have a Bible? X: I did, but the guard took it away. So it’s good I had a lot of verses in my head. Kristy: Yes, it is. (to guard, who is sitting reading the Bible) So you have his Bible, right? (holds microphone in front of him) Guard: Yes. That’s what he was put in prison for — preaching from this book. Makes no sense that he keeps reading it when it’s what got him in trouble. Kristy: But it looks like YOU’RE reading it now. Guard: (shuts Bible hurriedly as if denying what he has been doing) Well, maybe a little of it. (looks around, leans closer to Kristy, and stage whispers) I find it a little bit interesting. (aloud to audience) It says God forgives those who believe in Jesus. Is that true? (accommodates answers) But what about me? I’ve put thousands of Christians in jail. Surely God wouldn’t forgive me, would he? (gets answers, or repeats that he read that God forgives sinners in the Bible) Well, what would I have to do to be forgiven and get saved? (gets answers or tells what he has read in the Bible about salvation. Repents and is saved, or indicates to the audience that he will think about what he has learned from them and the Bible.) Scott: We’ve found out that Christians who are put in jail often bring other prisoners — and even guards — to Christ. Prisoners in Vietnam do so, and many Christians around the world do the same. Kristy: Well, that’s our report for today. Thanks for joining us!
