FLOATING WIND
TURBINES, THE
NEW GENERATION
OF OFFSHORE
WIND TURBINES
01/06/2017
DCNS Energies' overall strategy is based on a
combination of hydrodynamics and aerodynamics,
offering floating offshore wind solutions suitable whatever
the sea environment.
7
FLOATING WIND TURBINES
DCNS Energies is positioning itself as both a global
integrator and a developer of semi-submersible floating
systems for wind turbines. DCNS Energies also offers its
industrial know-how for offshore arrays marine operations.

An industrial and integrated solution (global system)
• A « Free Floating Platform » with a semi-
submersible floater : light, competitive, adapted
to mass production, easily towable
connectable/disconnectable
• A Multi-MW wind turbine, adapted from fixed
offshore to the floating environment (equipment
and control command)
• A permanent offshore mooring for shallow water:
innovative, cost effective and quick serial
installation
• An industrial approach from the early beginning,
integrating from the very first design phases the
capacity to build and install 50 units/year.

SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE
ARCHITECTURE TO BE
ADAPTED TO ALL SEAS
• Sets of floating substructures that can be either entirely made of steel or be hybrid steel/concrete
• Concrete :
• No fatigue issue
• But permeability and weight issues
necessary to use expensive light
concrete
• Studied for Americas
• Steel :
• Reduced Weight and easy to
manufacture “columns”
• But fatigue driven
• Studied for Asia
• Hybrid :
• Best of both technical world with
possibility to use standard concrete
• Studied for Europe

Maine Aqua Ventus : a 12MW floating wind pilot project in Maine (USA)
01/12/2016MRE presentationMRE presentation 10
New England Aqua Ventus I (the Project) is a 12 MW floating offshore wind
pilot project
to develop a clean, renewable energy source off Maine's shores.
In May 2016, the Project has been awarded to enter a national competition
for the opportunity to receive $40 million in U.S. Department of Energy funding
This Project builds on the success of the DeepCwind Consortium Research
Program
UMaine researchers deployed a 1:8 scale of a 6 MW VolturnUS floating platform off
the coast of Castine, Maine. The hull and turbine were successfully tested for nearly
18 months from deployment in June 2013 to removal in late-November 2014.
