Dear Diary,

Delhi is a place where we canfind occupation with competi-tion, luxury with dissatisfaction, humble people with jerks andNew Delhi with old Delhi. Mostof us, in spite of living in Delhi, have never been to old Delhi, especially Chandni Chowk,Jama Masjid and many more ofsuch historical parts of theCapital. I agree that it is one ofthe most overcrowded areas inthe city, but it’s still fun to visitthe area. The chat shops, andthe stalls selling kulhar waalilassi, are awesome. Along withthe traditional saree shops, many small things presentthere, reflect the past of ourcity, thus touching our hearts.

Most importantly, the Red Fortthere acts as a red jewel. OldDelhi is a must visit place!

Dear Diary,

With the launch of the Metroservices in the city ofBengaluru, our metro cities arefinally coming of age. Thenewer entrant always learnsfrom the experience of the olderplayers, just as Delhi learntfrom the experience of Kolkata.Hopefully, Bengaluru can makethe best of the combinedexperience of the two citieswhere the Metro runs, and takethe Metro usage to the nextlevel of capability for intra-citytransport. -Ashish Rai

Do you break out into acold sweat at thethought of makingrangoli on Diwali? Does

your rangoli always end uplooking like a smudgy messcompared to your neighbours?Take a deep breath, there’s aneasier way out. Markets acrossthe Capital are flooded withready-made rangoli optionsand other colourful decora-tions to make things easier.

From stencils, netapparatus, different types ofcolours to printed rangolistickers, you can use variousmethods to make easy andbeautiful rangoli designs. “A lotof customers used to ask forstencils to make rangolidesigns, so we thought ofintroducing them at our shop,”says Rajan Khanna, of FancyBangle Store in CentralMarket in Lajpat Nagar.

The stencils come in two

varieties - made of cardboard(R65) and net (R40 onwards). From fancy designs totraditional ones, such as thefeet of Goddess Lakshmi, andhappy Diwali messages, thereare plenty of stencil designsavailable. “The net stencilsshould be used carefully orelse the design can get messedup very easily. Since the stencilis small and the colour wouldseep in slowly, one should takeextra precautions whiledesigning,” says the owner atRaj Pustak Bhandaar in themarket.

Also a hit this year are theready-made printed rangolistickers. Available in squareand circle shapes for R15 andR10 respectively, these stickerscan give the look of a powderrangoli design. “These stickersare selling the most,” saysRajesh Kumar, of NandaniCandles shop in Sadar Bazaar.Check out the varieties ofrangoli colours - kumkum andgrained. The price ranges fromR15 (for six colours) forkumkum and R10 for a singlecolour for the grained one.

The markets are alsobuzzing with other homedecoration materials like fancyBandhanwars, artificialflowers, ganesha idols andother new stuff.

OTHER COOLDECORATIONS

■ STENCILS: Differentpatterns are made oncardboard. All you have todo is keep the stencil on thefloor and put colour through the design.

■ NET STENCILS: The patternis finer and can even be ofgods and goddesses. But,making it is a little trickier,as there is a lot of detailing.

■ STICKERS: These are readymade printed rangolis, which ensure that there’s alook of powdery rangoliwhen you stick them on thefloor. In short, they are nofuss rangolis.
