“The Savior’s Birth”
Lesson: Luke 2:8-20 GOLDEN TEXT:
“Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).
TODAY’S AIM:
“To see that God can do miracles to bring us salvation.
INTRODUCING THE LESSON:
One might have expected the announcement that the long-promised
Messiah had been born would have been made to a king, high priest, or
prophet. The event certainly had great spiritual, political, and religious
significance. To make the announcement to shepherds would not have
been expected. But our God is the God of the unexpected. He is always
creating new things and new approaches to people. He can surprise us
today with a new sense of His presence and a new relevance of His Word
to us.
PRACTICAL POINTS:
1. God will use us as we remain faithful in our calling (Luke 2:8-9).
2. God’s good news is for everyone (Luke 2:10-11).
3. God does not play hide-and-seek. He will lead us to our destination
(Luke 2:12).
4. God’s awesome power and authority command praise (Luke 2:13-14).
5. We should want to investigate the things of God with great interest
(Luke 2:15-16).
6. We should be willing witnesses for God (Luke 2:17-19).
7. Seeing God’s will fulfilled brings rejoicing (Luke 2:20).
CONCLUDING THE LESSON:
We are common people. We would hardly expect to be the ones to whom God
would send angels with an important announcement of a world-altering event.
And yet we have been given a great deal of information about God and His
salvation—not only about the birth of the Messiah but also about His death and
resurrection. We have been told what these things mean and the eternal results of
our faith in God. We have been given the written Word of God about God’s plan
of salvation and prophecies of His plans for the future. Is what we do with this
information important, or do we ignore it and go back to our daily routine? We
choose our reactions and profit or lose by them.
First, it is of absolute and ultimate importance to react in faith to God’s Word
about the Lord Jesus in this life. It is not possible to live the fulfilled life we
can and should live without having Him as our Savior. The presence and power
of the Lord Jesus through the Holy Spirit is the only thing that will change us.
Second, our eternal destiny depends on our faith in Him. When we come to know
the Lord Jesus as our Savior, the fact that He died for us does not depend on our
authority, character, or experiences—no matter how interesting these things may
be. It depends on the character and actions of God and His faithfulness in saving
people. We must hurry to tell others that He was born and died for them too.
