    Why choose LTHTr for foundation training?

    The tracksThere are currently 18 different foundation tracks at LTHTr accommodating 54 F1s and 54F2s. Please take a look at these and you will see the variety of placements available for you.Each track has been specifically constructed to give you a breadth of experience and also theopportunity for more in-depth learning. There is a specific academic track available for 3doctors each year. Research experience is offered in Critical Care, Respiratory Medicine andMedical Education. If you are interested in research but are not on this track, then we can putyou in touch with the appropriate consultants who can help you. Opportunities also arise tocomplete formal Leadership and Management training, in association with LancasterUniversity, for a number of trainees although this is subject to change.

    SupervisionDuring each placement you have a Clinical Supervisor who will work with you to offerguidance, feedback, teaching and training in order for you not only to achieve the goals setwithin the Foundation Programme Curriculum but also any further personal targets. AnEducational Supervisor will also work with you over the 2 year programme. Their role is toappraise you and guide you through your professional development. Often for one of yourplacements, your Educational Supervisor will also act as your Clinical Supervisor.

    The Foundation TeamAlthough we have a large split-site set up at LTHTr and there are many trainees, thefoundation team are accessible and friendly. The team comprises of a co-ordinator, anadministrator, a director and 2 associate directors. Any problems you may experience, be theyadministrative or otherwise, will be dealt with promptly and effectively-we will always keep youin the loop. The co-ordinator and administrator for foundation are available to help you inperson or over the phone every day of the week. The FPD and AFPD’s have 5 sessionsbetween them, and are usually available to be seen at these times. The directors of thefoundation programme will get to know you personally over the 2 year period not only duringthe thrice yearly one-to-one meetings you will have with them but also during your dedicatedteaching time or at meetings that you can initiate yourself. The directors will want to know allabout how your training is going and whether there are any issues that need addressing. Theyare able to give you feedback on reports from your clinical and educational supervisors andguide you on any issues raised. They will be able to give careers advice and pastoral care ifneeded. They are interested in your achievements not only within the profession but externalto it as well.

    Dr Alison Gale, Director of Postgraduate MedicalEducationI am a full time consultant Obstetrician andGynaecologist, having been in post since 2001. I havealso held educational roles for much of this time; locally,regionally and nationally. As Director of PostgraduateMedical Education I am responsible for ensuring thatyour training is of high quality and meets the standardsset by the GMC. This includes ensuring that allconsultants are aware of their duties as Clinical andEducational Supervisors and have been approved forthis role. We have an active Internal Review Group(IRG) within the Trust to quality assure MedicalEducation – you will have the opportunity to feed into thisand let us know of any concerns, worries or good areaswithin your training. I hope you enjoy your time with us,both hospitals offer excellence experience.

    Dr Andrew Haughton,Foundation Programme DirectorI am a full time consultant at LTHTR, working in theAnaesthetic department, spending half my time in theatreand half in Intensive Care, on both sites. I also work aspart of a friendly and approachable team who organisethe quality-assured education programme for foundationyear 1 and 2 doctors. As stated above, there is a formalprogramme of teaching based in the education centres -weekly for FY1s and fortnightly for FY2s. However, mostlearning occurs in clinical areas and we aim to promotean effective work-based learning environment. Our teamworks closely with the clinical and educationalsupervisors of our foundation doctors. In addition toregular meetings with their supervisors, we meet ourtrainees individually for personal interviews. We reviewportfolios, identify areas of educational/ professionalexcellence or concern, give careers advice and offerpastoral care.

    Dr Ajay Dhaygude, Associate FoundationProgramme DirectorI work as a full time Renal Physician and training lead forRenal Medicine and am also part of a very friendlyFoundation Programme team at LTHTR. The Foundationteam organises a structured educational programme,mapped to the curriculum for both FY1 and FY2 Doctors.We closely monitor the quality of educational sessionsbased on the feedback. I also meet Foundation Doctorsfor 1:1 reviews typically 2-3 times per year. Thesemeetings are rather informal but cover all aspects oftraining, including progress of FY Doctors, career advice,pastoral care and any other issues which may affectsuccessful completion of the Foundation Programme.Feedback is also given to their Educational Supervisors.I also visit General Practitioners on a regular basis toassure the quality of training delivered in the primarycare set up. We continually seek feedback from traineeson the Clinical placements, to try and achieve theexcellence we aspire to.

    Dr Fiona Crosfill, Associate Foundation ProgrammeDirectorI am one of the foundation team’s Associate programmedirectors. I have been a consultant obstetrician at theRoyal Preston Hospital for 5 years and have worked inPreston for 20 years on and off. I have a longstandinginterest in medical education and for the last few yearshave had a lead role with the medical students beforemoving on recently to foundation years. LancashireTeaching Hospitals trust offers a wide range ofprogrammes and provides a friendly and supportiveenvironment in which to work. Also, the North West ofEngland offers an excellent quality of life whether yourinterests are outdoor (like mine), or more cosmopolitan.The team at LTHTR already has a good reputation fortraining, education and support during the first two yearsof the medical career and most of our trainees leave usfor their first choice of future career. I am looking forwardto playing my part in making the foundation programmeeven more effective.

    I have worked in the department since July 2012.I facilitate the teaching programmes for FY1 and FY2doctors contacting speakers and help to organiseadditional courses.I arrange appointments on behalf of the FPD’s. I managetrainee’s portfolios on the Horus online learning websiteoffering support when required.

    I also help coordinate other events including Induction,Competency Skills and the Foundation ShadowingProgramme and provide general team support.

    Dedicated Teaching Programme

    The teaching programme for F1s takes place for half a day every Thursday and for the F2s, all day alternateTuesdays. A wide range of topics is covered in a variety of set-ups-lectures, discursive groups, IT sessionsand practical skills sessions using top of the range simulation models. Teaching is compulsory for all those noton leave, on-call or working nights and it is bleep-free protected time. This is also the time for you to catch upwith your friends and peers! Many departments also offer their own teaching at different times in the week towhich F1s and /or F2s can attend on a rota basis. Contributing speakers are consultants from throughout theTrust and local health economy with a vast experience and knowledge of not only their field but sharing theirexpertise in a teaching environment. Many of our speakers have attended courses on Problem BasedLearning and group work forms an important part of the teaching programme.

    Simulation The simulation unit offers a state of the art training facility available for use by undergraduate andpostgraduate training as well as multi-disciplinary training for nursing and allied health professionals. The unitis at the cutting edge of simulation development in the UK. Computer controlled patient simulators are goingmobile for the first time to train doctors and nurses and other healthcare professionals across the UK in lifesaving techniques. The state-of-the-art Simulation Centre at Royal Preston Hospital, part of LancashireTeaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has bought a new £18,000 wireless human patient simulator,called METIMan.

    The simulator will form part of ‘The Sims’ family of mannequins used to practice key clinical skills, which allbreathe and talk and come equipped with realistically articulated bones and blood.The new kit is also totally wireless, featuring long lasting batteries, a separate control unit, compressor toaccurately simulate breathing and Wi-Fi connectivity

    Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was established on 1 April 2005, as apublic benefit corporation authorised under the Health and Social Care (Community Healthand Standards) Act 2003. It is registered with the Care Quality Commission withoutconditions, and provides the following regulated activities:

    Assessment or medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act1983

    Diagnostic and screening procedures Maternity and midwifery services Surgical procedures Termination of pregnancies Treatment of disease, disorder or injury

    The Trust serves a local population of 390,000, and provides a number of specialisedservices to around 1.5 million of people across Lancashire and South Cumbria. Most of theclinical services are provided at the two hospital sites: Chorley and South Ribble Hospital andRoyal Preston Hospital. There is also a Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit at the site of the formerSharoe Green Hospital in Preston, and the Broadoaks Child Development Centre in Leyland.

    Some of the Foundation placements are outside the acute trust and take place in LancashireCare Trust. These include the Psychiatry, Palliative and GP placements.

    General Hospital services are provided as follows:

    24-hour emergency department facilities Intensive, high dependency and coronary care units General Medicine, including elderly care General Surgery and Urology Child Health Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery Orthopaedics Maternity Services Gynaecology Anaesthetics Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery Ophthalmology Support services for diagnosis and treatment such as Pathology, X-ray,

    Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and specialist nurses. Rehabilitation Services

    Study Leave

    Funded study leave is available in the F2 year. In the F1 year, there is no funded personalstudy leave. However from the last placement, you are encouraged to undertake tastersessions. Those F1 doctors scheduled to be in an Acute Speciality placement first in the F2year, will be enrolled on an ALS course. Also the Undergraduate department offers trainingfor PBL and Communication tutors.

    Awards

    Every year trainees are nominated for the titles of ‘Foundation Doctor of the Year’ and ‘BestPortfolio’. Competition for this is fierce and the rewards well worth while! Although only 4trainees can win, we appreciate all the hard work that both F1s and F2s deliver to the Trustand to the foundation programme itself – this is reflected in the references trainees receiveand their success in attaining further jobs in the future.

    As a teaching hospital, the Trust plays a key role in supporting clinical education andresearch. There is an established medical education programme, and our hospitals contributeto the delivery of the curriculum for medical students, foundation trainees, and postgraduates. The Trust also provides work-based experience to support the training of nurses,allied healthcare professionals and healthcare workers. The Trust also has a very activeresearch programme, and both the activity level and the allocated funding from theDepartment of Health have continued to rise. Achievement is evidenced not only by the largenumber of articles and research reports for publication being accepted in peer reviewjournals, but also by the continued success in attracting external research funding.

    Education Centre

    The Trust has three state-of-the-art Education Centres at Chorley and South Ribble Hospitaland Royal Preston Hospital.

    The flagship training venues feature large lecture halls and houses hi-tech monitors, lightingand sound technology for presentations. They also have modern, comfortable teaching andmeeting rooms plus a comprehensive library with computer work stations.

    The education centres are also used by the Trust’s medical students as well as doctors,nurses and support staff. Other healthcare professionals such as GPs, practice nurses anddentists also use the training facilities.

    One of Lancashire’s best hidden secrets it is often bypassed for more popular areas such asthe Lake District.

    It is classed as an outstanding area of natural beauty and a favourite for walkers and cyclists.

    The trough itself is a valley and a high pass within the Forest of Bowland. The pass is 295feet above sea level.
