PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
What do snow and quilting have in
common? Snow in the South is so rare that when
it happens, everything stops. For the kids and
kids at heart, the snow is a treat to behold, but for
others it can be a real headache. If you live
where it snows all the time, you rarely appreciate
it.
A quilting project can stop me in my
tracks too. If you are like me, at first the wonder
and beauty of a new quilt can thrill me. When
working on it becomes routine or frustrating, I
often lose the joy in my work and start looking
forward to my next “fresh” project.
Just as snow is a treat for us who live in
the South, the time we spend on our quilting
projects should be a treat that excites us! Quilt
on, fellow stitchers! Done is good!
Keep on Stitchin’!

MEETING/MEMBER NEWS
KiDZQuilts
Jo Wieczynski, Coordinator
Ten gals attended our January meeting, when 18 quilts were donated to the NICU at Sarasota
Memorial Hospital.
Our February 14th meeting will be from noon to 4:15 p.m. at the Fruitville Li-
brary. Plan on spending a pleasant afternoon sewing and choosing fabric for a baby
quilt. This will be a good time to sign up for helping at the March 3 & 4 FKQG Quilt
Show at Robarts Auditorium. We will be selling about a dozen of Diane Pfaehler’s
beautiful machine pieced and hand quilted beauties.
For additional information, contact me, Jo Wieczynski at
FKQG Embroidery Club Mary Nissen
On Jan. 16 Don Bean was scheduled to speak to the embroidery group. Unfortunately that didn't
happen due to the fact that the doors at the Church were all locked and we couldn't get into the hall. He
has kindly offered to return and speak to the group on Feb 20 before the meeting. Please arrive
promptly at 5 so we can fully enjoy what he has to say.
We received many wonderful items for our embroidery basket for the quilt show. If any of you still have
items to add either to the Embroidery Basket or to the birthday basket you may bring what you have to
the Feb. meeting.
Hope to see you all in Feb. Bring your dinner for chat and listen if you so desire.

MEETING & MEMBER NEWS
Oncology Charity Quilts Cass Bowen and Mary Nissen
The Board meeting will be at the end of
the month and I would definitely like to present
some ideas for our charity initiative for 2017. I
did receive one idea at the last meeting and that
member will do a little more gathering of infor-
mation. We’ve done many things over the years.
I plan to suggest children’s quilts or larger for
SPARCC (Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center) in
Sarasota.
Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center, Inc.
(SPARCC) was formed as a non-profit agency in
1979. SPARCC is the only state-certified center
for domestic violence and sexual assault services
for Sarasota and DeSoto Counties. All of
SPARCC’s services are free and confidential.
We made quilts for this non-profit organi-
zation many, many years ago and I think it would
be a great place once again for our charity efforts.
Please contact me with any suggestions you have.
I would ask that you gather information about the
charity so it can be presented to the Board with
all the necessary information to make a decision.
I’d also like to thank the members that
turned in a few more quilts for the oncology unit.
I will be delivering them this week. If anyone
has anymore, please bring them to the meeting
but I may keep them for the new charity.

Your Design Here Monday, February 20 9:00—4:00
February 2017—Kathryn Schmidt
With just a few simple unconventional techniques, you will be well on
your way to mastering non-traditional quilting. Building on the tech-
niques, you will learn how to put together the pieces into a finished de-
sign, all without a pattern, templates, or even pins! You will enjoy frus-
tration-free piecing, including easy, curvy sewing. The fun is in the proc-
ess, where there are no mistakes, just alternate design decisions.
Turn your brain around with a new approach to free motion quilting. Start with a great pat-
terned fabric and expand the design into our quilting space. Learn to control your machines as
well as draw with it. Some previous free motion quilting experience is desired, but not essen-
tial!
Starting a quilt from a blank sheet of paper can be very exciting. This class will show you how
to design a unique quilt that is totally your own. Using a process, you will learn how to con-
struct a small quilt that allows you total freedom to make your own design decisions. NOTE:
Your quilt will not look like this sample picture!

Precision Lines
Monday, March 20
9:00—4:00
Embrace the beauty, simplicity
and versatility of the line in your
quilts. This class will explore
linear quilt design and piecing.
Students will learn design princi-
ples related to using lines in quilts
as well as precision, measured
piecing for simple, stunning linear
quilts. Learn tips and tricks to
achieve perfectly straight lines
and flat intersections.
This class will help you use all
those scraps that are too big to
throw away, but you're not sure
how to use. Learn this unique
twist on improvisational piec-
ing and discover and learn to
use the concept of "inflow" to
manipulate the negative space
in your quilt. During the class
you'll make blocks of varying
sizes and learn the paneling
process to create a unique lay-
out for your quilt. Scrappy Improv

April-2017—SherryLynn Wood
May-2017—Pat Delaney
The goal of improvisational
patchwork is flexible pattern-
ing. Start with a favorite
“traditional” block pattern and
gradually transform it through
a series of repetitions and
variations. Without rulers, tem-
plates or instructions to guide
you, you will gain a deeper
sense of how patterns evolve,
while learning ruler-free patch-
work and composition tech-
niques along the way.

Get Your Bias Strip
Curve On
Tuesday, April 18
9:00—4:00
Participants will learn the
innovative ruler-free tech-
nique of bias-strip piecing on
the curve, how to flatten inter-
nal bubbles as they arise, with options to apply the technique
in fixed block or improvisa-
tional compositions. This is an
advanced technique that takes
time to master but worth the
effort. Imagine the possibili-
ties
Claying Around: Creating unique quilt em-bellishments (half day class) Sunday, May 14
This is one of the happiest
quilts you will ever see! It is
filled with bubbles and fizz and
the bright colors light up the
dark background. Paper piecing
makes it fast and accurate. You
can make it scrappy or choose a
set of colors to repeat in each
block. The border is a snap with
paper piecing and you can de-
cide to add prairie points, pip-
ing, beading and buttons or not.
Pat will introduce you to the
basic machine-quilting skills
that will shift your quilting into
high gear! Topics include using
stencils, graphic inspirations,
freehand techniques, stippled
designs, and more.
Learn simple effects with polymer clay to create but-
tons and beads. Polymer clays blend beautifully, so any
color can be achieved to match your fabrics exactly. A
quick trip to the oven sets the clay permanently. Non-
sewing.

Education Notes Jann Warfield
In 1969 I made my first quilt. Actually, it was a playpen pad. I had no idea how to make a quilt. I
didn't even think of it as a quilt until over 20 years later.
I was a seamstress and could certainly make a padded playpen pad! And so I did. I made sev-
eral intentional quilts in ensuing years with no instructions. In 1987, I found a quilt shop in
Ellenton and they offered a beginning quilting class. I took it and learned as I made 4 sampler blocks,
each with different techniques. It was during this class that I found out about QUILT GUILDS!!! I im-
mediately joined the Manatee Patchworkers. They offered classes. I took them and learned more about
building quilts. I helped with judging for the quilt show. I learned more about building durable quilts
and why there were rules about their construction. Good construction techniques were incorporated into
my quilts. I completed my sampler quilt with a double piping at the binding. I've taken MANY quilt
classes since those first classes, from both Manatee and Friendship Knot Quilt Guilds. I've taken classes
at AQS and NQA shows. I am a quilt class junkie. Every class I learn something new to me. Some tech-
niques I have used many times. Some techniques I seldom use, but they are in my toolbelt of techniques
I CAN use when I need to. It is really nice to know that whatever my quilt throws at me, I know how to
get through it. Earlier this month I took 4 classes from Susan Cleveland. I have made lots of piping and
binding over the years. Did I really need to take those classes? Well, it turns out, I did!
I learned some techniques that improved the quality and look of my binding and made the best
piping I have ever made. I took those new techniques and used them last night as I made and applied
piping and binding to the quilt I have been working on since January 2007! Yes, it will be in the show!
I guess it was waiting for me to take those classes to complete it so it could become the best that it could
be. Taking Guild classes can be so valuable. They up your game while you meet and are enriched by
very successful quilters. We have a lot of classes coming up this year. None of them are so advanced
that a beginner should not take it. Yet all should offer information to our advanced members. We can
all take something away from every class we take as we build our skills. I hope you all will take advan-
tage of this incredible gift Friendship Knot offers to you. It is quite unique to be offered so many learn-
ing opportunities by a local Guild. We are extremely fortunate. As a reminder, I could use a hostess for
every class. If there is no hostess listed on the online roster, contact me at [email protected] or (941)
921-2263 or Barbara Jefferies (941) 624-3647. Do yourself a big favor. Treat yourself to a class!
Manatee Patchworkers Ruth Baggs
Join Esterita Austin for a humorous look at her journey from her beginning art experiences to the present.
This power point/trunk show zips along as it illustrates how she grew the seed of a concept into bold design
themes. The focus is on the power of value over color in constructing dramatic compositions. With her generously
dispensed tips you will be inspired to run back to your stash and fuse your own thread of an idea into a WOW
fabric composition.
Her workshop will be on March 11 from 9 AM to 3 PM. Luminescent painted illusions, $45/nonmembers, $35 for
kit. Location: Humane Society of Manatee County, 2415 14th St., W., Bradenton, FL 34205. For more infor-
mation: http://www.manateepatchworkers.org/.

Quilt Show News Pat Sefton, Elva Farrell and Ann Greene
There are only a few weeks until the show-March 3 & 4 at Robarts Arena in Sarasota and many
of the chairs still need volunteers. Remember, volunteering for a minimum of two hours will qualify you
for an armband for entry to the show both days. Here’s how you can help-contact the chair of the area
(or areas) where you want to volunteer.
Set-up—Barbara Jefferies: [email protected] We still need several more people to help
with set-up on Thursday, March 2. Why not get your volunteer hours in prior to the show then you’ll
have two full days to enjoy the show. Members who sign up for set-up will be carrying the quilts to
their assigned position for hanging and will also be pinning quilts on the sheets.
We need three people with vans (clean, non-smoking) who can transport quilts from the drop-off/judging home in Parrish to the arena. Quilts should be loaded into vans Wednesday, March 1, kept in vans overnight in a garage for security, and delivered to the arena early Thursday morning. If you can help with this please contact [email protected].
Sheets—Beth Grindal: [email protected] Another opportunity for set-up day. All the sheets that
are used on the hanging racks need to be ironed to get the wrinkles out. Bring your iron and ironing
board and help with this task. Many hands make light work and as soon as the sheets are all pressed
your job is done!
Hostesses—Mary Lee Charlet: [email protected]. Please help out our fabulous guild by volun-
teering at our quilt show. I desperately need help with our hostesses. Many time slots are open and if
these don't fit into your schedule, I will fit you in at whatever times suit you best. There will be chairs in
each row for hostesses to sit when they need to rest. We really appreciate everyone’s help in all areas.
Thanks "millions."
Consignment—Janine Ward: [email protected]. Times are available on set-up day (Thursday, March
2) or during the show Friday or Saturday.
Raffle Quilt—Dawna Basl: [email protected]. Many volunteers are needed during both days of
the show. This is a sit down job so after seeing the show, why not volunteer to sell tickets for the quilt
and sewing machine. Also, you can earn your wristband by selling tickets prior to the show. Pick up
tickets at the February meeting or if you want tickets prior to the meeting contact Dawna and she’ll ar-
range to get them to you.
Quilt Show-quilt drop off-Friday, February 17-9:00-12:00 and Saturday,
February 18-9:00-12:00. Quilts must be delivered to Betty Dillon’s home:
2965 Wilderness Blvd. E, Parrish. Directions are on our website.
We almost met our goal of 200 quilts—175 quilts have been entered.
Thanks to all of the members who have entered quilts—it’s going to
be a great show.
Don’t miss it!

Gift Basket Boutique—Karla Lynch: [email protected] We received a donation of Shiva Paint-
stiks. To go with this item and make a basket we could use the following items: the book “Paintstiks on
Fabric” and some rubbing plates. If you have these items, please contact Karla at pauland-
[email protected]. Someone told me at the last meeting that a cottage group was making a 30’s basket. If it
is your group let me know. Also, if you’d like to work with us at the Boutique during the show or set up
day send me an email. Thanks
Mini-Quilt Silent Auction—Cass Bowen and Marlene Kurtz: [email protected] or mme-
[email protected]. To date, we have received 75 small quilts for the auction. We are getting closer to our
goal of 100. We can realistically hang probably about 40+ each day. However, if we get smaller quilts,
that number would increase. We would rather have more than less. We will find a place for them. We
will be receiving them at the February meeting as well as on set-up day. Of course, we would like to
have them all at the February meeting so we can log and photograph them before the show. The guide-
lines for the quilts are posted on the website under the Quilt Show heading.
We have all the volunteers we need for our booth so please volunteer for other areas of the show. We
especially need hostesses and members to press sheets on the day of set-up. Please contact Mary Lee
Charlet for hostesses for the show and Beth Grindal for sheet ironing on set-up day.
Take Down—Elva Farrell: [email protected]. When the show ends at 4:00 on Saturday, March 4
we need members to unpin the quilts and carry them and the hanging quilts to the quilt return tables. No
one can take their quilt home until all the quilts are in the return area. Sign up to help and we’ll have the
quilts ready to go quickly.

Library Letters
Ellen Simon
This month I am going to do a quick run
down of the books that were added in November
plus two more to be added to the library in Feb-
ruary.
In the category of Quilting Technique,
there is Divide and Design, Guide to Grids,
and WALK – Master Machine Quilting with
your Walking Foot. The last title is by Jacquie
Gering, our teacher in March.
In the Survey/Catalog category the new
books are And Still We Rise, Inspired by Na-
tional Parks, and Art Quilts International- Ab-
stract and Geometric.
In the general Quilting category we have
Appliquilting, Artful Improv, and Twisted.
Twisted was my favorite of the new books. The
author created new quilt tops from vintage
pieces, sometimes just three old blocks. Then
she gave the tops to twenty different long arm
quilters to quilt as they saw fit. The results were
amazing and so different from one another. The
quilts from this book (as well as those in Artful
Improv) were displayed at the Houston Quilt
Festival in November.
In the Art category the books include Art
Quilt Collage, Gelli Plate Printing, and From Art
to Stitch.
I was sorry to miss the January meeting
but I had such fun with my nieces in Phoenix.
We saw a stupendous fashion exhibit at the
Phoenix Museum of Art, hiked on the Lost Dog
Wash trail (great name) and went to the most
unique museum I have ever been to – the Musi-
cal Instrument Museum. Couldn't get through it
all in one day. And I even made it to one quilt
store!

are delivered. Please make a point to introduce
yourself to anyone wearing one of these yoyo
“nametags”. Thanks so much!!!

Monthly Guild Meeting Night
Well I stuck my neck out again! I am
happy to say I am rounding up people to please
come to Der Dutchman prior to every Guild
meeting. This group meets over dinner to wel-
come new members. ARRIVAL time 5 PM.
Our Guild FRIENDSHIP KNOT has
made it a priority to welcome new members.
This is the PLACE to do that. Guild Meetings
make it impossible to meet or talk to a new mem-
ber. One, you do not have a chance to see their
face, hear their voice or even find out what they
are interested in. It has taken a long time for me
to get to know people and I would love to be in-
volved and be part of this incredible Guild.
SO, please consider 5 PM at Der Dutch-
man before every Guild Meeting. I need a head

MEETING & MEMBER NEWS
Pet Bed Workshop
Jane Sanks
In January we completed 77 beds—
same as in the December workshop.
I have scheduled our February meeting
for Friday the 24th .
Basically we stuff the beds at the work-
shop, sew the opening closed and then stuff the
lining into the outer fabric bed. We work fairly
hard, but only for 2 hours. Join us when you
have free time. It is a terrific group of people.
Remember when filling those bags with
fabric and batting scraps, we do not need any
fabric that is stiff. Also, we do not use uphol-
stery, denim or corduroy scraps. If you have
fabric pieces large enough to make into a bed
